Planet Earth in HD!!!

I am currently floored with awe. Discovery HD has set a new standard for HD. I cannot begin to explain the excellence of filmography. It is groundbreaking and not just from a HD perspective. If anyone has seen the slow motion shot of the shark taking out a seal in the air....it is without a doubt the most spectacular truly slow motion shot I've ever seen in my 37 yr old life. It was a 2 second shot (realtime) done in a high framed per sec shot for 45 seconds (not choppy).....friggin matrix style, where you can see drops of water splat off of the fins and tail of the shark in unprecedented detail. If I can do nothing but recommmend any show, it'd be this...for sheer quality. It is the story of mother earth in its purest form. Beautiful and cruel at the same time. Amazing.

Discovery HD is awesome. It's set as my default cable box channel. I forgot this premiered last night but I'm sure I won't have any problems catching it again.

I've been watching this in standard Def (I have an HD tv but no HD service - sad clown) and it's still amazing. Absolutely stellar mini-series.

You forget, HD is of higher resolution than real life.

Its also coming to both Blu-Ray and HD DVD on 4/24. Should be even more stunning since there will less compression.

I watched the first episode Pole to Pole and have the other 2 on DVR. An amazing mini-series which is epic in scale. Gorgeous content, cinematography, sound, and narration - which is done by Sigourney Weaver. It's completely enthralling. I giggled like a little school girl, my wife's jaw dropped.

I felt like a child with my mother reading me a book before bedtime - the awe and wonder of a world I hadn't known. It taps that emotion.

Seriously ... I've never seen anything like it on TV.

This is what HDTV is about. Plain and simple. I highly recommend it to anyone who has a spare 3 hours of time and a sincere fascination for Earth.

Word about this series caused my parents to get both the Discovery Channel and HD service, but they don't have an HD TV.

Zero and I just finished watching the first episode. Oh. My. God. <3 I guess we're watching a different version because it's narrated by David Attenborough.

I'm currently getting this via nefarious means and can't wait to see it. The teasers they've been playing on the Discovery channel and every other channel on cable look awesome. Perhaps this is a good time to suggest Baraka and other films from Ron Fricke if you haven't seen them before.

If I'm not mistaken this show was actually made by the BBC, and not the Discovery Channel.

Exactly. The BBC version, which is available on DVD, is narrated by David Attenborough. I do wonder if everything else is the same though. The BBC version has a really cool making of featurette called "Planet Earth Diaries" at the end of each episode. Are they playing that part on the Discovery Channel version?

I agree - this is an awesome show and I particularly liked the Deep Ocean episode which showed some truly amazing creatures. For example, a squid with bioluminescent balls on the end of it's tenticles that glow a bright blue when it's in a defense mode and makes it look like the squid has a bunch of glowing eyes.

Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.

Truthful all the really great Nature Documentaries come from the BBC. The Blue planet series is probably one of the most picturesque i have ever seen. I believe they spent 10 Mil making it though . It has another similar episode very similar to the Planet earths version of deep ocean. I would suggest that any of you that are interested in the ocean at all take a look for it.

Zero most of the DVD box sets of these series have making of featurettes. I know they released the series in December on DVD (good luck findin g it though).

There all amazing documentaries that are definatly worth a look/ purchase.

I agree. Fantastic series that really makes HDTV something to behold. This should be standard demo material for in store displays. I watched them on Standard Discovery last year, but they seem brand new in HD. The shark scene is just ridiculous. I wonder what the cameraman said to his producer after that shot. "I think I might have something here..." Just breath-taking.

Are you sure you weren't watching "Miracel Planet?" It's a similar series, but is completely different as it usually revolves around the creation of earth and evolution of the species, narrated by the British guy. The cinematography is not quite up to Planet Earth material, but it's just as compelling, particularly in HD. They're two very different series, but very easy to confuse.

Nope, it's the BBC's Planet Earth. We just watched the first episode, Pole to Pole, last night.

The shark and seal scene discussed earlier was quite amazing, but I was actually most impressed with what they did in the section about the Kalahari. The way they put together the footage of the dog hunt was stunning (in fact, that was the subject of the making of segment on that episode), and the underwater photography of the elephants showed an aspect of the creatures that I've never seen before in my life.

Edit: In case the Discovery Channel version didn't have the making of featurette, it talked about how for the first time in nature documentary making they used a Hollywood grade "heli-gimble" camera system. Basically, it is helicopter with a gyroscope mounted super high quality camera. With it, they can quickly go from super wide landscape shots to stable, high quality close ups from over a kilometer away. They discussed how instrumental this was in finally being able to document a full hunt, but it's clear that this technology is responsible for a great deal of the truly amazing shots throughout the show.

Same here...I saw the 'Pole to Pole' episode in 1080i on a 60' HD, and it was then that I concluded that HDTV was worth the money. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. They showed this bizarre bird (had to be from another planet) and cleaned up an area where it planned on performing for a female. His show began, and I can't articulate the bizarre shape it morphed into, other than...The bird turned into a black face with two blue eyes and blue smiling lips, and bounced like a ball.

BTW....You know that slow motion shot (with high speed camara) of the shark getting air?....Well, on your DVR/Tivo...hit the slow motion button...Unbelievable. For DVR users...hit the play button twice in quick succession to play something in slow motion.

Glad I caught this thread -- it had completely slipped my mind. My daughter loves the Blue Planet series so this is a must see as far as we're concerned. For those who are curious about show times/dates, here's a complete show listing. Looks like the next opportunity to catch them will be this Saturday (March 31st).

I'm not sure if the broadcast show has it as I haven't caught it yet, but DiscHD has been showing a making-of vignette as time filler after their other shows that sounds exactly like what you're talking about.

Looks like Discovery is showing them out of order. At least according to the wiki, which never lies.
I am curious why some of us got the Attenborough version and some of us got the Weaver version. Regardless a moving series with awe inspiring imagery and sound. Well worth the time.
