COC compliant rewritten intro aka: MMOADD
I have been listening to all the GWJ podcasts and am slowly catching up. Excellent podcasts guys and its great to hear a well informed, intelligent podcast that isn't boring as hell.
Sorry for ignoring the COC... did you guys really read the COC or did it take someone to point out your stupidity before you learned about the rules? I will swiftly convert this noob intro thread to a thought provoking question, or further cement the first impression I have created as a complete douchebag. ![]()
I did want to start a discussion about MMOADD, which I think I am troubled with atm. I have played about every MMO since EQ1 and have a hard time sticking with any one for very long. Anybody offer any advice for someone who is constantly drifting around?
Currently subscribed MMO's:
LOTRO (beta)
Vanguard
World of Warcraft
Eve Online
Lineage 2
Guild Wars (kind of an MMO)

You broke at least 2 Code of Conduct rules in your first post. Boy are you in trouble.

Oh yeah, that too!
I was pretending to be tough. Did it work? Do I need to work on my delivery a bit better?
Man, if I sound tough via the forums, you should just hear me on vent. I'm like the Sergeant Slaughter of WoW.

Welcome man
Don't worry we've all been guilty of COC breakage, but it helps keep this the best home on the net. I think you actually have to break three COCs before you send money to Certis or offer up a butt pat.
Oh yeah, in before the .. er lock!

Hmm, define ADD further.
Because I can easily jumpship for another MMO with a class/classes or feature that sounds appealing. Usually, they dont live up to whats written on paper so I go back to the old WoW standby.
Yeah, its also easy for rose colored MMO nostalgia to whip me up in a frenzy. Unfortunately, upon resubbing it only lasts for an hour or 2. Then I stretch it out for a week to try and get some semblance of monetary value out of my whim.

I know exactly what you mean.
I have always loved MMO's but in reality... they many not be the thing for me. It's like an addiction. I see a new MMO, I read the features I think "this is going to finally be the MMO for me" and then I rarely continue after the first 30 days. I occasionally resub for a month and then remember why I quit in the first place... I just get bored. I am also an ALTholic in every MMO I play with the exception of EVE.
okay, you asked for it...imho
MMOADD is defined as the inability to focus or concentrate on one particular MMO long enough to fully experience the game before rushing off to try another. Often followed by bouts of doubt and periods of resubscribing to previous MMO's for brief periods of time. Someone suffering from MMOADD may also be an ALTholic who creates many characters in order to find that perfect one. Unfortunately this is often never accomplished as the person usually quits that MMO before they are able to get any of their characters very high in level. There is no known cure....
[i]Little History of my MMOADD.
Everquest (played for 2 years, officer in a guild, created 30 alts with my highest character a lvl 30 druid)
Asheron's Call (played for 30 days and couldn't get used to the character models)
Dark Age of Camelot (played for 3 months but never ran very well on my comp and didn't like the character models, but have gone back every now and then)
Horizons (played for 2 months but it ran like a sick dog and had tons of bugs.. community abandoned it basically)
Final Fantasy XI (hated it, felt like a console port with a weird menu system that I couldn't get used to)
Asheron's Call 2 (didn't like it... didn't keep my interest)
Star Wars Galaxies (loved most of the game, classes, skills, and crafting was too complicated for me... just didn't take the time to really learn it... before they totally killed it)
Everquest 2 (hated that all the races started in 1 of 2 cities as I am not a fan of huge sprawling cities in MMOs and hated not starting out as your final class, which of course they changed later on, and just plain boring.)
City of Heroes/Villians (this was ALT madness, all I did in that game was create new characters... it was amazingly fun, but actually running missions was rediculous, after you ran about 5 you basically knew how the rest were)
Lineage 2 (mind-numbing grind, hated the race to high level content which left the more casual gamers with empty areas, also the bots killed this game)
Anarcy Online (never really gave this a fair shot, by the time I tried it, it looked pretty awful)
Planetside (fun for awhile but not a long-term MMO for me, then they completely changed the game and everyone left)
Shadowbane (didn't try this until much later and by then it looked awful and had weird commands, never really tried it past level 5 or so)
Matrix Online (never got me hooked, combat was wonky and felt like a crappy version of COH)
World of Warcraft (felt way too easy with zero risk or reward, way to 733t for me and the horrible community made me want to poke my eyes out, also too fisher price and the color pallete felt like a bad acid trip)
Auto Assault (kinda weird... it felt like I was paying to play Twisted Metal Black)
EVE Online (enjoyed the skill based game play with real time advancement, like the openness of the game, but I felt hampered by being forced to join a Corp in order to really enjoy the game, I am still kinda playing this game though)
Dungeons and Dragons Online (I don't have real life friends that play DDO, so finding cool people that I wanted to play with never materialized, I am a casual gamer and this game had far too many instances and was far too limiting for solo play)
Vanguard (love the mechanics and freedom but hate how the game runs and the rampant bugs, not a fan of the ultrarealistic models and how horrible the game looks at mid or low quality, content is spread far too thin, whats the point of having Realm vs Realm PVP if the people are so damn far apart, FFA PVP server is a gankfest but better than the Team PVP...game is just not ready by a long shot)
Lord of the Rings Online (love most of it as a core PVE game, not a fan of the PVP setup and feels pretty dumbed down, not nearly as much freedom as other MMO's and following the books really makes this game feel more of a single player game to me... could still capture my though, I will be preordering but still hasn't "hooked" me)
If this doesn't constitute MMOADD then I don't know what does.

Hmm, let me take a stab. I am an altaholic too.
UO - played for 2 1/2 years;
EQ - played for 3 years; never got higher than 41 druid; gave my account to a friend; got a new account and got as high as a 29 froglok shaman
DAoC - played 10 months; level 20 spiritmaster (several dozen characters in the 15 range); resubbed for catacombs for a month; resubbed last month for a month
AO - played for a 14 day trial 2 years after launch; quit
AC - played beta for 2 months
AC2 - played for a year; got probably half the classes to level 38-41
Shadowbane - played for 2 weeks
Planetside - loved it for 8 months
CoH/CoV - got bored with both after 2 weeks
Horizons - played for 3 days
FFXI - played for a week
EQ2 - tried to play the beta; it still lagged and took forever to zone at the lowest settings; resubbed for a month after combat revamp; I actually enjoyed it quite a bit after the combat revamp and being able to play the advanced classes from the start
WoW - playing since launch; highest character is 42; have a dozen level 30+ characters; have 2 dozen in the 15-29 range
EVE - played 3 days of a 14 day trial
Matrix - played for 1 week
DDO - played 3 days of a 10 day trial
LOTRO - played the beta for a week

Well, Irongut, I have to hand it to you - you're totally taking Chiggie's advice on establishing oneself in the GWJ community, but I think that once you're tagged your identity is probably already established.
