Got laid off tonight. It sucks. I'm not bitter, got a good package out of the deal.

Anyone want to hire me?

I once got laid off with a twenty dollar severance package. Sorry you had to go through that.

I got a really good package. So, I''m cool and happy with AE. Just sucks being laid off. But I do love the work.

The game isn''t selling poorly. The problem is that the money guys made predictions on numbers that the new President (and former Co-president) doesn''t know where they got them. It takes time for a MMP to start taking in the cash from subs. So they had to lay people off. Sucks big time.

I''m sure none of the guys who guaranteed those numbers right out of the gate lost their jobs, did they? Usually the case.

I''m not going to trash the company. The guy that made a mistake is a good guy and I will never say a harsh word.

I feel it in the gut, don''t get me wrong. AE was filled with good people.

Hey Elysium owns half the site and he''s been turned down by Starbucks and Barnes and Noble. I think Ulairi is safe.

Also, title changed Ulairi.

Sorry to hear that! Just from talking to some other people and reading random stuff, it seems that''s pretty much par for the course in the game industry, they have 3-4 core guys who assemble a team to make a game, the game gets made and goes out, most of the team is laid off, 3-4 core guys go on to make the next game.

It''s cool that you got a good package though. Sounds like you''re doing the right thing to, look for another job right away, don''t wait until 2-3 weeks before the package runs out.

Sorry to hear about the layoff man. Sucks. I wonder what I would fall back on if I got ""the chop"".

Not that I advocate career change, but did you think about going back to school? Seems to me that a coder with an MBA makes the decisions, and fires other people, than the other way around.

Hate to see anyone as enthusiastic about their job as you get shown the exit, Ulairi. If you need any references, feel free to direct them to GWJ. You singlehandedly kept Horizons alive in these forums for months. Any company should be grateful for that kind of publicity.

Artifact Entertainment Prepares for Growth

This just in from Artifact Entertainment Community Manager, Gale Rellian:
Artifact Entertainment, Inc. developer of the critically acclaimed, massively multiplayer online game Horizons: Empire of Istaria is in the process of adjusting the company in order to meet the demands and the goals established with the recent launch. Launching December 5th in Europe and December 9th, 2003 in North America, Horizons is already serving tens of thousands of players. As part of this plan Artifact will be eliminating positions within the company in order to focus on the key elements of supporting and growing Horizons.

""The product is growing steadily every day"" said David Bowman, President and Creative Director at Artifact Entertainment, ""Artifact is focusing on this growth and how to best serve our customers. With this new plan in place, Horizons will be able to meet the demands placed by the customers, reach new levels in service, and continue to improve upon the game. The future goals of Horizons are very specific. Artifact will meet these goals and is prepared to adapt to reach them.""

In our continued focus on supporting the product, Artifact has empowered its player base to free the Satyr, one of the many subjugated races. This unique experience allows the players to beat back the Undead Hordes, accomplish difficult quests, and free a race for all players to experience. This is just part of Artifact''s commitment to provide a continually entertaining experience.

Wow, talk about putting a spin on it. ""Our title has successfully launched in both the US and Europe. It''s growing briskly and we are excited about supporting it making it better. You can be a Satyr and do fun stuff like unlock quests, kill monsters and obtain cool stuff. It''s really an exciting time for Horizons. Oh, and did we mention. We''re cutting jobs.""

I highlighted the part about cutting jobs because they bury it so well you''d hardly even notice it.

It must have been a good severance package if you can afford to live up here AND go to graduate school. Kudos to AE for actually giving you severance and notice. I''ve worked with several software companies that escort laid off unfortunates to the door after an hour to say goodbye.
