Puzzle Quest (via DQ)
Monday, March 19th, 2007 - 4:20pm
Bill Harris has this up today.
Damn is this game addictive and fun!
It combines a bejewled-type puzzle game with fantasy RPG elements, including job classes, spells, leveling up, gear, city building, and pokemon capturing.
Sounds a bit schizophrenic, right? Well it executes really well.
Here is a demo for PC. Apparently this is going to be released on the DS and PSP tomorrow...somehow it's gone completely under the radar. I definitely recommend trying it out.

Yeah, I lost about an hour and a half to the demo Friday night. I'm flying to London Wed. This will be going with me.
Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy - both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love me.

Yea I tried this yesterday and was pleasantly suprised. I ended up playing through the demo with each of the 4 classes and suspect I'll pick this up assuming it isn't more then $20.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.
Whoa!

According to the developer's forums they are going to release on Xbox 360 next and then a full PC version. They did not have a timeline for these versions though.

This game has really killed my morning:) I'll be buying it tomorrow for the DS. Hopefully the DS version is similar to the PC version. I'll likely pick up the PC version once it's available for download (I'm assuming this is how the PC version is going to be sold).
I love RPGs and enjoy most casual games, but man do I hate Bejeweled and its many horrifying spawn. Twenty minutes of yawn-inducing gameplay was more than enough to demonstrate that this one is a definite pass.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

I really, really enjoyed that demo, despite my hatred of bejewled. I think this game would be really suited for the DS - I may pick it up.

I had a blast with the demo last night. I'm picking this up for the DS as soon as I find it. If I haven't burnt out on it by the time the PC version is released I may grab that too - it's a great laptop game.
Amazing how games like this can be completely off my radar and then jump to must buys.

Well, the DS version is supposed to be out today - anybody have any luck finding it?

Dunno, going to go pick that up as well as Cooking Mama Wii for the wife. I predict failure, as I never seem to get games on the day they're released.

I ordered two copies for my wife and I. I was going to go to EB today, but I can never seem to find the games there on the "Ship Date" listed on the website (PQ has a ship date of 3/20). I figured if they ship to me on 3/20, I'll have it on the same day as the store.

I've called around and had no luck finding a copy.
Looks like that's another game I'll have to wait until after my vacation to play.
A couple of places said to call back in the afternoon, but I'm not getting my hopes up.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
Yeah this became an almost instant buy for me. I'm curious how well it will play on the dual screen and if moving small icons is a pain at all.
Anyone else played well past the "end" of the demo? Might be some slight spoilers, so...

Apparently, the UK version is available. I guess if I can't find a copy here today or tomorrow, I can pick one up in London Thursday or Friday. Exchange rate will kill me though.

I picked this up for DS yesterday. The stylus works just as well as the mouse, if not better, which I'm very happy with. Took a little while to get used to the way information is layed out (broken up over two screens, unlike the PC demo) but once I got used to it I had no issues. I kept getting my ass kicked by the training battle - I must suck

I saw a preview for this in a gaming magazine and got way too excited. I'm already a huge fan of Puzzle Fighter, Meteos, Magical Drop, Puzzle Pirates, etc. I'll round up a few trade ins this weekend and call around. Weee!

I was waiting to hear how it played on the DS before taking the plunge. Now I have a report on how it plays on the DS, by DS! That, along with Bill Harris' report are enough to convince me it won't detract or distract me while playing.

Picked up the DS version yesterday along with STALKER. I ended up playing this most of the night
Great game!

fantastic demo, i'm hooked. The bejeweled mechanic combined with special powers and combos, and RPG stuff as well, brilliant.
So if you've played the PC demo and the DS version, are you happy with the smaller presentation? Does it really matter?

I was worried about the smaller size until I remembered how much I played Meteos, and those things were tiny
It's gonna feel smaller, but I got used to it pretty quickly, and the stylus really is quite accurate. My biggest issue with the PC -> DS transition was that your mana and stats were on a seperate screen then the spells and puzzle board, instead of columned together like on the PC demo. Honestly though, if I had played the DS version first I doubt I would even notice, and I got used to it quickly anyway.
Something that does suck is instead of a mouse over for help text you need to click a help button then tap what you're interested in. Annoying, but a pretty small deal once you know what your spells do. I'll try and post something in more detail later.
Also, don't try to read into the 'story' to much, you may bleed out your ears

I picked up 2 DS copies and 1 PSP copy. I'm probably going to return the PSP copy unopened, as it has a pretty annoying bug that removes companion bonuses. The PC Demo - DS transition was shocking at first (going from a 22 inch widescreen monitor to the DS touch screen took some adjustment), but I did get comfortable with it.
I've played maybe 5 hours on the DS so far, and I'm not even close to being tired of the game.
You know, I have Bejeweled on my PDA... and I love it. I think my high score is around 240k, and all the rest of the high scores in the 70k. I haven't been able to reach that 200k range again, and what's funny is that when I got the 200K score, I wasn't even paying attention to the game. I was watching TV and was just fiddling with it, and it kept going and going.
I may have to pick up this Puzzle Quest majigger.

Whoa, that might be cool. Of course I mean the bastardized version of Mah Jong, not the actual traditional game.

And did you see the other new puzzle game being made by the same company? It's pretty much the same game as puzzle quest, but in space! They know their formula, and their audience it seems.

I did the exact same thing today. It's going to be a good weekend for gaming, methinks.

Picked this up Saturday morning - EB was apparently the only place around me that had a copy, and I got the last one. It sounded like they only got one or two.
Definitely an enjoyable game, I'm sure it will get a lot of playtime in my DS. It took me a bit before I actually inverted the screens - I was wondering how to check status ailments until then. It's a neat trick to get the touchscreen to affect the entire visible area.
Xbox live:Scaphism
I got mine Saturday afternoon as well. I am enjoying it quite a bit as well and have a tough time putting it down. I also really like the shoulder button switch effect, pure genius.

RIP ChronicNecrosis
I think I'm obsessing about this game. I focused on finishing off Hotel Dusk this weekend to clear out my DS for some dedicated Puzzle Quest fun. After turning up no copies at any of the 5 stores I checked I ordered it from Amazon on Friday. But I cheaped out and went with free shipping so it only shipped today (urgh). I'll be lucky if I have it by the weekend.
Meantime I'm getting my fix with the PC demo. Part of me feels ashamed - it's fundamentally just Bejeweled which I laughed at my wife for getting hooked on years ago. But it's all that RPG goodness they wrapped up in it that pulled me in.
I really hope this does also come to the PC - I'd definitely grab a copy. Then again I could easily seem myself grabbing DS, PC and Xbox versions if they went that far. Yea, I'm hooked.

So what class is everyone playing as? I chose a knight because the idea of being able to spam experience seemed pretty good, but now I wish I had a class that could progress its elemental masteries a bit faster. It's less of a problem now that I have a temple in my citadel (where you can trade gold for upgrades to your skills), but the further I progress in the game the more it becomes clear that it would be awesome to be able to quickly stock up mana.
Edit:
Also, the guys at Penny Arcade are pretty into the game as well.
