Help me find a laptop with a cl...pointing stick
Friday, March 9th, 2007 - 9:07pm
I can't stand touchpads, and I'm looking to get a serviceable tiny laptop not for gaming.
I'm looking for a laptop with the following requirements in order of importance:
pointing stick(under no circumstances will I buy a laptop without one)
tiny (12" ideally)
786432 or more pixels (that's 1024x768, but I don't care that much about aspect ratio)
at least 1GHz processor
fingerprint reader (cool toy)
cheap
The closest I can find is the Lenovo Thinkpad X60 for $1220 (XP Home, least ram possible, fingerprint reader) would order 1GB stick from newegg and install my own XP pro nLite build.

I didn't know they were called pointing sticks. When I worked at a high school I always called them clits. It's a miracle I wasn't fired and/or arrested.

The Dell Latitude line generally has both touchpad and pointerstick. The touchpad can be disabled. Not sure if there's a model that will fit your other criteria though.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
I called it a clitoris in my original post's thread title and it got locked.
It got locked 'cause it was in the wrong forum, though the title didn't help.

I figured "help me find a laptop" went under "Everything Else" rather than what I perceived to be a tech support section. I *tried* to put it in the right place and was rewarded with my post being gutted and having to resurrect what I wanted to say from browser history. Can the moderators not move posts here?
It's policy not to.

Wikipedia to the rescue.
Pointing stick is kind of a generic term for it, each manufacturer has its own name (trackpoint, trackstick, etc) - and knowing them makes it a lot easier to find what you're looking for.
Under no circumstances should it be referred to as it was in the original thread.

The policy does mention doing this for ESTABLISHED members. Slapping a newcomer like that might be seen as a little harsh. But at the end of the day: this isn't my site and they can do whatever they want to. Plus, the clit thing probably aggravated the mods a little.
EDIT Nevermind... Cyn's been here for a year? That Coffee's starting to get dusty! Maybe you should try to move up in the world?

For trackpoints, you've got Lenovo, HP business line, Dell Lattitude, Toshiba Tecra (possibly not all of them) and I think a few Fujitsu's. You can't find a trackpoint on a consumer grade notebook AFAIK, and a smaller laptop is more expensive than an equivalently performing larger one, so meeting your requirement of "cheap" is going to be your biggest challenge. Unless you substitute a different value for "cheap" than I use

Just get yourself a nice wireless optical mouse (I recommend the Microsoft brand).

Wassuh? Logitech all the way. Microsoft made decent mice before they started using gummi worms for mouse wheels. I use a Bluetooth MX1000 for my laptop mouse, oh yeah.

Registered a year, posted about thrice and spent maybe an hour in the last year here. So assuming familiarity with the rules would be a mistake. Besides, clitoris is a medical term, it's not may fault some people form a negative association with it.
You may have noticed where cheap lies on the prioritized list.
I'm not looking for a desktop replacement, or a gaming machine. Just something with a decent processor with 802.11b/g & perhaps bluetooth.
If I planned on using a mouse I wouldn't care about the touchpad, I would just ignore it.
I really like the pointing stick for a couple of reasons. It's really efficient to go from typing to moving the cursor. And I'm so used to it I wouldn't need to hook up a mouse or need a good mousing surface. I could actually use the laptop on my lap in a car or whatever. I'd almost rather use it than a regular mouse for development too.
True, it isn't your fault. However this site IS called Gamers with Jobs. Many people cruise this site FROM their jobs. That 'medical term' excuse only goes so far.
Check out the Dell Latitude line. You have to go under their Small Business site. The D420 line seems to have most of your requirements.

I've used mine for quite some time. Mouse wheel works fine, it's quite solid.

Yeah see.. I'm probably in trouble already for opening this thread.
Not something I expect when I open a tech thread

Only problem with these is you can only get the ULV processors with them -- which may or may not be OK depending on what kind of apps you're going to run. The Lenovo X series can be had with a regular mobile Core 2 Duo, so that would be a better choice for more demanding apps (but you'll get less battery life).

I find it funny that 'clitoris' is off limits but people can run around with 'buttsex' in their sig line.

Cyn, a PC hardware author I work with (who -for years- has sworn his undying faith to using a Trackpoint stick) absolutely swears by Lenovo, specifically because they (well, IBM) pioneered the Trackpoint stick and still have best implementation of it.

It's been called that for as long as they've been around.

Of course you're not going to find that, since the... umm.. track point came first. My grandfolks had a 386 laptop with one quite some time ago.
Overall though, I agree with other folks in the thread; I prefer these to touchpads, but I've got a caveat to that; If I can turn the touchpad on and off, I like those a little better.
