I need some new electronic music suggestions

While loading up my iPod for my daily commute it dawned on me that my techno music collection was extremely old and that other than BT's phenomenal This Binary Universe I haven't bought anything new in years. My favorite artists in the past have included Underworld, The Chemical Bros., Prodigy, Moby, Paul Oakenfold, DJ Tiesto, DJ Shadow, BT and Massive Attack but I'm open to listening to anything.

Hopefully some GWJers have some suggestions about what I should check out to get my playlist current and find some new tunes. Any suggestions and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Good topic! I could do with some pointers here as well, as I'm a bit light in the area myself.

You could give Ladytron a try. It's something just a little different, and I like what I've heard.

For older stuff you didn't mention, I always liked The Orb. The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld is a great 2 CD album.

I like Handsome Boy Modeling School but they've gotten really pop lately. I also enjoyed the Crackdown soundtrack. Gorillaz . I don't have a link to the songs, but it's full of artists I want to check out, and mostly electronic, too.

We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Some of this is firmly in the Chillout sub-genre: Postal Service, U.N.K.L.E., Röyksopp, Thievery Corporation, Sigur Ros, Zero 7, Boards of Canada.

First, don't say "techno" again, ever.

That out of the way, let me go scroll down my iPod's Electronic genre listings...

A few with recent album releases...
AFX
Alex Smoke
Amon Tobin (did the Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory soundtrack, did four kick-ass albums before it)
Boards of Canada
Bola
Hybrid (a track of theirs is included in the Crackdown soundtrack)
Isolee
Monolake
Ochre
Plaid
Ricardo Villalobos
Squarepusher
Supersilent

Some slightly older picks...
Aphex Twin
Autechre
Future Sound of London
Gus Gus
Orb
Orbital
Pentatonik
Portishead

I have a lot more at home, but that will do for now.

An easy thing you can do is go to Last.fm and listen to tracks from most of these artists.

I protest including a post-rock group like Sigur Ros under an electronic music heading.

I'm in desperate need of new electronic music too. I'm too busy nowadays to keep track of it all. Sometimes I'll listen to MusicOne (streaming audio) to find new stuff.

Here are some albums you might enjoy (some are older though):
Paul Van Dyk - Reflections / Politics of Dancing Vol. 2 and basically anything else he does
Air - Talkie Walkie
Chicane - any of his stuff
Ferry Corsten - L.E.F.
Iio - Poetica (this might too girly for you)
Telepopmusik - Angel Milk
Ladytron - 604 / Witching Hour
Morcheeba - Big Calm
Basement Jaxx
Daft Punk - Discovery
Olive - Extra Virgin
Orbital - Work / Snivilization / The Altogether
Royksopp - Melody AM / The Understanding
Scissor Sisters - Tah-Dah (kinda gay disco)
Scott Bond (his stuff might be hard to find)
Shiny Toy Guns - We Are Pilots (electro rock)
The Thrillseekers
Thievery Corporation
Tricky
Zero 7

That's all I can think of for now. I'll add more later.

The World is Gone - Various. No it's not a various artists compilation, they were just too stupid to be trusted with naming themselves. RIYL: Massive Attack.

Harmony in Ultraviolet - Tim Hecker. RIYL: DJ Shadow, but more ambient.

On the poppier side:
Silent Shout - The Knife
Witching Hour - Ladytron
Transparent Things - Fujiya & Miyagi

WAR: Coda, Archmage, Vortex <Unguilded>

I recently acquired a few new electronic albums (mainly derived from Pandora's suggestions) that I've enjoyed:

Timo Maas - Pictures/Loud
Fluke - Risotto
Sasha - Airdrawndagger
Royksopp - Melody A.M.
Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegetarians

My favorite (and one of the most main-stream) is probably the Chemical Borthers (as you mentioned), and I like most of the other artists that you mentioned. I'll second the suggestions of Basement Jaxx, Paul Van Dyk, and Daft Punk. Shiny Toy Guns I liked for a little while, but the album got old fast (at least for me).

DT8 Project

House:
Bad Boy Bill
Richard Humpty Vision
DJ Irene
DJ Dan

Drum and Bass: (aquired taste)
Roni Size / Reprazent
Aphrodite
dieselboy
Logistics

Hardcore: (For ravers only! Don't judge me)
Scott Brown

I'm not one to obsess over which of the hundreds of genres of electronic music the stuff I'm listening to fits into, but that's a pretty neat site. Thanks.

Just some of my favorites:

Super System
Bouncy and a little obnoxious. You may hate them or end up loving them like I do. Give Always Never Again and shot, a very fun album.

Greyboy
Good mix of hip/hop and jazz. Mastered the art is the album to try.

Conjure One
Kind of new-agey but still very good and a lot of the voice work is done by Poe which makes me very happy. Extraordinary Ways is the album to check out.

Sound Tribe Sector 9
Artifact is my all time favorite album. I listen to it at least once a week. Also my they are my default background music while playing Eve online.

Moonraker
Again a very jazzy band. The vocals are pretty unique. Their self titled album is the one to try.

Vitalic - Ok Cowboy is a must-have.
Tiga - Sexxor
anything Groove Armada or Nathan Fake

Belgian (great if you can find them):
Buscemi
Daan (especially Swedish Designer Drugs and Housewife)

I've got a lot of loose song suggestions, few albums that haven't been mentioned (second on The Knife - Silent Shout).

Ellen Allien - Maria
Booka Shade - Body Language
Till West & DJ Delicious - Same Man
Muttonheads - Too good
Djuma Soundsystems - Les Djinns (Trentemoller Remix)
Chromeo - Needy Girl
Lifelike - Discopolis
Bodyrox - Yeah Yeah
Niels van Gogh - Pulvertum
Isolee - Beau Mot Plage
Red Carpet - Allright

And so on and on...

The Crystal Method. I scanned, but no one seems to have mentioned them. Vegas and Tweekend and Community Service II and Nation of Boom have been getting pretty heavy play from me. Lots of other great suggestions out there though.

As poppinfresh said , Ladytron is always a good pick, specifically the album Light&magic- and any song from it. Otherwise, a few great bands/artists that have so far been overlooked:

Evolution Control Committee - cool psuedo mash-up electronic- lots of free tracks available @ www.evolution-control.com
Subtle - mix of electronic and hiphop, fronted by legendary underground mc Doseone, even if you don't like hiphop you will like this band, especially their newest album, For Hero: For Fool
Antipop Consortium - another electrohiphop band from Astralwerks, though heavier on the hiphop. Stick with Subtle if you don't like hiphop
Goldfrapp -very retro electropop, but still good
Peaches - loud and abrasive electroclash
ohGr- deeply strange and infectious electronic from 1/2 of seminal industrial band Skinny Puppy
Negativland - the fathers of copywrite violation
Gary Numan - surprisingly, still making music. His new work is alot darker and more ambient that his famous stuff, but still good.

All of my favorite electronic artists have already been mentioned.
So I'll suggest some crossovers instead:

Electronic crossover with jazz:
- Amon Tobin
- De-phazz (my favorite in this area)
- St. Germain

Electronic crossover with "post-rock"
- The Faint
- FisherSpooner
- Muse
- Scissor Sisters
- Radiohead, of course

I'll second this. Soma's great (if a bit repetitive if you listen to it a lot). Before my ipodish-type thing died (what do you mean I can't plug a 6 volt charge into a 4-volt plug?!?) I used a shoutcast ripper to download a lot of the songs to my player just so i could have a personal somafm. Worth checking out, and great to tune into when you don't want to think about what to listen to.

!!! (Chk Chk Chk) is some good stuff.

Dntel is the guy who did the music for the Postal Service, and he has his own album out, "Life is Full of Possibilities".

I don't "get" The Knife and The Blow. Each has a couple songs I find interesting (We Share Our Mother's Heart is really good, and The Blow has a hilarious, I don't know if I'd quite call it a cover of Every Little Thing She Does is Magic), but nothing to put them on the "Best Of" lists for 2006. But my fingers aren't very close to the pulse of the electronic pop music community.

Thanks to everyone's for the suggestions! My iPod is absolutely filled with tons of new stuff and I'm really enjoying listening to it. Some of those hidden gems (www.kahvi.org, Alex Whalen, etc.) were well worth checking out.

My wife found out about this thread and is also interested in finding some new dance/rave music to jam to. She's looking to find some good, energetic dancey music that you'd more than likely hear while clubbing. Some of her recent favorites have included Ferry Corsten's "Rock Your Body, Rock", Mstrkrft's "Easy Love", and Moby's "Next is the E". She's not really into the ambient/trance scene and tends towards the faster pace, peppy songs. Any ideas or suggestions?

Thanks again!

So no ambient trance? Or just no trance in general and more like hard dance. Is house and happy hardcore out of the question?

Mostly she likes the house, hard house, nu-energy, clubbing music stuff that you can find in clubs or on a Dance Dance Revolution soundtrack. She's definately not into hardcore music at all but will tolerate some trance/vocal trance. Basically, if its got a good pulse-pounding synth beat that will get you on the dance floor with your hands in the air and your butt shaking then she's into it.

-Ferry Corsten's L.E.F. album is pretty good. There are a few regular trance songs on there but also some kick ass shake your booty songs too.
-Most of the songs on Moby's Everything is Wrong is pretty peppy (crossing the lines of hardcore).
-Scott Brown and Dune are in the happy hardcore genre, kinda like the stuff in DDR.
-Hard house: I recommend Bad Boy Bill, Richard Humpty Vission, and DJ Irene (her older stuff only, she switched to hard trance ). DJ Dan is more mellow house but still funky. Some of Angel Alanis's stuff is good too, I'd put him in the same category as DJ Dan.
-Let me also suggest DJ Denise. She's a local DJ here and everytime I see her at a rave she keeps me dancing!

As for good trance I'd try compilations like Ministry of Sound's Clubbers Guide 07. If she doesn't mind surfing the web, I recommend going to radio1 and checking out the Essential Mixes as well as Pete Tong's and Dave Pearce's radio shows.

I'll try and think of some more later, but for now I must get my morning coffee.
