Damon, Brody, & Sinise as the new Kirk, Spock, and McCoy?

From IGN

Out of the three, Gary Sinise is the only one who looks like the character he's rumored to play. Adrien Brody doesn't look anything like a Spock (that guy from the New Voyages fan films looks more like Nimoy) and Matt Damon? I know he's gotten alot of dap for his roles in The Departed and The Good Shepherd, but he still looks too "boyish" for the role. Also rumored for roles are Forrest Whitaker's co-star in Last King of Scotland James McAvoy as (surprise) Scotty and Lost's Daniel Dae Kim as Sulu. Sounds like IGN's smoking funny cigarettes and been doing a Trek XI fantasy draft, and their accuracy with Trek rumors has been fairly inaccurate. See their report that JJ Abrams was off the project as director for proof.

Beat me to it. I actually don't think damon would be too far off.

Gary Sinise I can see, I think he's got both the personality and the looks to play McCoy, not to mention the acting chops. Brody I don't know about, never seen anything with him in it. As for Damon, I am staunchly against anything involving him - except maybe Dogma, but only because he dies in that.

Just so you guys know, it's not set in stone yet. I checked IMDB Pro and none of the casting is as of 2/24.

That said, I like Sinese. The other two get a great big WTHeck from me.

Oh, and McEvoy for Scotty is just wrong.

I like Matt Damon very much. Just not sure I like him as Captain Kirk.

He's a pretty good actor actually, so I think he'd have the chops for the role. Check out 'The Pianist' if you want to see some of his best work.

All in all, that would be surprisingly good casting, in my opinion. Similar to what Certis said, I don't think anyone would 'fit' in the roles for me, but I could see these guys as being a good compromise.

If Damon overacts like only Shatner can, it will be glorious.

Daniel Dae Kim as Sulu is an awesome choice. If you look at photos of both they could almost be related. I am not sure Matt Damon can pull off a role such a CPT Kirk. Shatner left some really big shoes to fill. If Damon could pull this off he would pretty much be set with the rest of his career. Gary Sinise would also do very well playing 'Bones', for the same reason dhelor described above. But Brody as Spock I have some serious doubts.

Yeah, me too. I mean, let's be honest, the original Star Trek cast is not exactly made up of Oscar-caliber actors. I love the old crew, but surely guys of the caliber of Damon, Brody and Sinise could absolutely tear the place up.

Also, if you're unsure about Adrien Brody, check out The Jacket after you're done being crushed by The Pianist.

I have to agree with Podunk here. The only reason why we romanticize the performances of Shatner and crew is because they are icons of our childhood. Looked at with the critical eyes of a discerning adult, their acting is pretty darned mediocre.

Shatner is reduced to roles that amount to little more than parodies of himself. As for the others, most are lucky to have found paying gigs outside of Trekkie conventions.

I don't want to look at Spock and see a sensative wimp.

Gary Sinise is another shining example of great Chicagoans. I say put Jeremy Piven in as Spock. He does do a great deadpan.

These actors certainly have the chops to make the characters their own. And that's pretty much what they'd HAVE to do. No one can play Shatner without it becoming parody (Shatner's post-Star Trek career is essentially self parody). But Damon could do Kirk, if people would be willing to re-imagine the character as "simply" a very clever, dynamic, playa of a Star Fleet officer.

But of course no one wants to see other actors make THOSE characters their own. They just want to see someone do young imitations of them. Which is why Sinese would be great. The others would have to do their versions of the Holy Trinity, and who's gonna line up for that?

In a perfect world, I'd like to see someone else get a shot at the roles; I found when I was reading Star Trek novels back in college I stopped seeing Shatner as Kirk if the book were well -written enough (which wasn't often).
After all, Bond has been played by pretty much every good looking British actor, hasn't he? And no harm has come to the character or the world.

Jeremy is too much a comedic actor I don't think he ever had a break out role yet to anything other than comedy. And I don't think this would be a good idea to try and do that here.

Oh if we're going to pick favorites to do characters I'd say Bruce Campbell for Kirk or Spock. Yeah that is right I think he could do both roles!
