Still a rumor at this point, but I'm not ashamed to admit that I loved the Wing Commander Series, and played faithfully all the way through WC4. I even enjoyed the poorly acted, cheesy Mark Hamill laden cutscenes...

So, yeah, I'd be stoked if they brought it back in some form for the 360. Sadly, it appears to be in the hands of EA, who now owns all the Origin properties...so who knows if it will be worth playing.

EDIT: Confirmed by EA!

Quote:
Wing Commander Arena is a fast-paced space combat game where players can team up to attack other teams of ships. The game introduces the classic franchise to an arcade-style experience that allows up to 16 players online in battle at once. Players can propel their customized ship through space, fire torpedoes and unleash deadly gravity bombs as they try to climb the leader board. Online players will compete for Frag count, high score and dueling stats.

"We're really excited to deliver unparalleled multi-player arcade action," said Chip Lange, EA Vice President. "The design for Wing Commander will appeal to both long-time fans of the franchise and immediately engage anyone who wants the melee style action of an arcade shooter."

Wing Commander Arena will feature four styles of play: single player, multi-team, multi-player free for all and multi-player duel. Within the game there are eight game maps that include team maps, free for all maps and dueling maps, so Wing Commander Arena offers a gameplay experience for every Arcade gamer, whether they want a quick ten minutes of action or a longer more immersive game.

Doesn't sound like it will really mirror the whole WC experience, but still could be really, really fun.

I will take back every naughty thought I have ever had about EA if they put all the PC versions of the WC series on XBLA or on a DVD that runs in XP or Vista (not the crappy SNES version of WC1, or the abortions that were WC3 and 4 on PSX).

Treat it with a huge grain of salt if its on Joystiq but I would happily give EA money for a Wing Commander game, old or new. Please oh please let this be true.

I, too, would love a WC Compendium! But, if you can find the disks (or ISOs), you can run Wing Commander via DOSBox.

And if you weren't already aware of it, Rabbit, I'm sorry for opening up this can of WC Whoopass! http://www.wcnews.com/techsupport.shtml

This thread is just a mean hearted tease without any substantiated facts to go with it. The rumor of another WC game is enough to make me cry myself to sleep again.

I will never forgive myself for giving away my copy of the Secret Missions for the SNES.

I still remember the thrill of the battle at the end of Wing Commander I. Each of the releases in the WC series and all its cousins (Strike Commander, Armada, Privateer) really played a key role in my early pc gaming hobby. Heck I even had Pacific Strike (or whatever it was called.... and yeah that one kinda stunk). To this day, I just remember the amazement of seeing what they had achieved technologically with that first WC, which I think I ran on my university 386. I dont think my pc was able to handle 2 though, didnt end up grabbing that till a couple years later.

This doesn't appear to be Wing Commander in the same vein as the original games (i.e. not story based) but if it plays anything like that and has multiplayer, I'll be over that in a blink.

So this begs the question. What ever happened to Chris Roberts? Back in the heyday of Origin he was really only behind Sid Meir and Richard Garriott in terms of famous game designers. Yet I haven't heard his name in years. I vaguely remember something about him leaving Origin to form his own company, but that was probably 10 years ago or so.

Edit: Nevermind, found it.

I need the story based, otherwise this just sounds like any other space combat game to me.

I'm with you, Ridlin. The story is what really made me enjoy the combat, if that makes any sense. Even so, the multiplayer aspect could make this a fun game just for sh*ts and giggles, even if it isn't 'really' what WC is all about.

I really hope they mean custom ships. No story does blow, but it might make for some fun multiplay action.

I was a huge fan of WC back in the day. Played 'em all (except the downloadable add-on content that followed WC5: Prophecy), but those quotes from the EA Veep leave me with nothing but a mild curiosity for this game. I generally don't like to stereotype, but I think all credibility for the game's potential is lost when your spokesperson is a corporate VP saying things like:

Quote:
"The design for Wing Commander will appeal to both long-time fans of the franchise and immediately engage anyone who wants the melee style action of an arcade shooter."

Could you imagine a Bethesda rep saying about Fallout 3, "Yeah, running around in a desert shooting muties will appeal to long-time Fallout fans and anyone who likes a good Lara Craft style shooter?" This sounds like Wing Commander in name only to me. What I wouldn't give, though, to see a modern remake of the original game.

While this game itself isn't particularly exciting for me, the fact that EA is paying any attention to the franchise is. Hopefully we'll see more interest in Wing Commander lead to actual new games.
