NIN - Year Zero
Nine Inch Nails have a new album coming out in April of this year entitled 'Year Zero'. The main webpage for the ablum has the tracklisting, plus a few hidden things on it. However, that's not the most interesting thing about what surrounding this album lately.
A picture of the T-Shirt from the upcoming concert tour was posted online, and it's quite noticeable that some of the numbers are colored differently then the rest. If you put the numbers together, you end up with this: 13102951040. Turns out it's a phone number that, when dialed, yields some interesting results (I dialed it earlier: it's interesting, to say the least).
Next, some USB drives have been found in a few unrelated concert venues in Europe. Most of them were just found in random bathrooms, from what it looks like, and contained a high quality MP3 of one of the tracks appearing on Year Zero: My Violent Heart. The song is available from a variety of sources online now, and it's interesting, to say that least. I guess the whole album is a concept work of what the political and global landscape might look like 15 years from now if current trends continue. You know, really lightweight stuff.
There are also a few ARG-type websites popping up in regards to the album. Strangely enough, some text has already been deciphered from some of the backwards writing appearing on some of the sites, and it looks like it's a verbatim quote for the second paragraph of 'The Hobbit'.
In any case, I've always liked NIN's music, but this is a interesting use of the net and excellent marketing, in my mind.
EDIT: Changed the topic name to be more reflective of what's going on.

Neat. Let's see....
B....E.....S.....U...R.....E...T.....O...D....R.....I....N..K...Y....O...U......R...O..V...A..L...T...I...N.....E
Ovaltine?! Son of a bitch!
Ok, just called the number.
The hell?
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
I love NIN... color me excited.

Long as they don't use lite-brites, they should be fine.

Regarding 'The Hobbit' quote: it looks like their might be another USB key or and additional piece of the 'puzzle' at their concert today in Bilb(a)o. Interesting.

I've been following this for a couple days. Cool stuff. Very excited for Year Zero, after listening to the bathroom song, I think this is what With Teeth shoulda been.

I'm a big fan of With Teeth... it didn't grab me right away, but after having it in rotation in my car & ipod, I really grew to like it. I'll be getting Year Zero for sure.

Im also excited by the fact that NIN has been playing some never-before-played songs on thier tour in Europe right now. Songs like Last from Broken and We're in this together from The Fragile. I hope they stay on the setlist when they come this way. And what does a guy have to do for a little Happiness In Slavery??
I saw them 5 or so times when they toured for WT, and on the last show they played Help Me I'm In hell (the little instrumental intro song before happiness in slavery), what a tease. (I dont think they've played HIS since Woodstock in what 92?)

KROQ has played the first single off Year Zero, called "Survivalism." Here's the thread at ETS with links to some radio rips and other information.

I heard it today on the way to school. It was ok.

I fall under the "fanboy" column when it comes to Nine Inch Nails. Trent could have recorded an hour and a half of him eating a PB&J and not only would I buy it, I'd proclaim it album of the year and capable of curing cancer. Yeah, I'm one of them.

Trent on his blog posted this today:
Cool! I haven't been this excited for an album in a while, and the new song ('Survivalism') is actually pretty good. Had to listen to it a few times to get the hang of it, but I really like it.

I went to college with and occasionally partied with Charlie Clouser. I love NIN.
"Sometimes I go around saying, 'Kommisar Paulson has seized the commanding heights of the economy!'" - Paul Krugman, asked if recent changes to banking are socialistic.
I'm there with you guys. I have both new tracks and I really like them. Moreso than some of the stuff on "A-With-a-Teeth-a".
I first saw nin at Lollapalooza in '91 along with Siouxsie and the Banshees, Rollins Band, Jane's Addiction, etc...
I saw them three times in the last two years alone. I guess I am a fanboy, too.
My wife once told me "You don't even remember when we have to go to the doctor, but you can tell me what Trent had for breakfast that morning!" (It was Cheerio's, btw.)

That sounds very much like a cutscene segue from an album. It could also be a promo piece with just an excerpt of a song. The voice, I'm betting that's Del tha Funky Homosapien.

Getting Del on a NIN track would be amazingly cool. There were rumors that it was Saul Williams in that phone message, but it's sadly not.

I don't know, I thought it actually sounded like Trent doing an exaggerated accent. However, the song heard on the phone message is Survivalism, if I'm not mistaken.

It is. Survivalism debuted on the radio today and it's been recorded and passed around on the internet already. My Violent Heart is the better of the two, but I can't help but find Survivalism unbelievably catchy.
I'm a hardcore NIN fan and I'm quite impressed with the scope of this album and how Trent is going beyond the music.

I just wanted to add to the NIN fanbase here. In college I was really into it collecting all of the various halo's. When "The Fragile" came out, I had already graduated and was saving money for a wedding, so collecting various remix singles and such was long past. But, I still really enjoy the music, and I really like "With Teeth". I can't wait for the new album either.

I'm the hater who bought The Fragile and With Teeth but doesn't think they remotely measure up to PHM, broken, or The Downward Spiral.

I'm sure NIN's commercial success would agree with you.

Pff, everyone knows Broken is the best.

broken was my favorite until I finally clicked with The Downward Spiral. I'm very much of a guitar-rock guy, so broken was particularly pleasing to me.

I'm gonna have to vote for broken as well, but really I've enjoyed every non-remix NIN album alot. I can't wait for this, but since I don't listen to the radio I haven't heard the songs yet.

They're on NIN's myspace to check out. I dont think you need to make your own account or anything.

A third song has been "leaked" tonight from the upcoming album. This one was found on another USB drive in another bathroom at a show in Barcelona.
"Me, I'm Not".
Slower than the other two, very synth. I dig.
Xbox Live | Steam | Xfire | Last.fm
And the 'leaks' aren't crappy quality either: 320kps for all of them. "Me, I'm Not" is somewhat mesmerizing when listened to in headphones.
Twitter | Xbox Live: dhaelis | PSN: dhaelis
320kbps = yes, but sound quality = not as good as my 160kbps CD rips.
I hope they don't sound like that on the store CD...
I'm going to go look for the "Me, I'm Not" now... I liked the other two.
EDIT-
"Me, I'm Not" is definitely better quality. I can't wait til this comes out in stores!
