Is this his opinion? Can he see that others don't agree? Of course if I was rich as he was I'd start going crazy too.

Or perhaps George is making with "teh funny."

Edit - I went and read the article. Can anyone else say, "Taken out of context?" Nothing like a clipped quote to drum up some page counts.

Did he explain why he feels it is the worst one? I'd like to know how he stacks them up from best to worst actually. So if Empire is the worst which does he feel is the best?

The ones HE directed, no doubt. Pure ego stuff.

He didn't direct Empire or Return, and I'm sure Return is right next to Empire on the bottom of his list.

This logic says that he considers the new trilogy a good one. Ow, my brain hurts just thinking about the possibility. Although I would love to have a taste of his drugs.

Jeez, you're not kidding. That's one of the worst out-of-context offenses I've ever seen in print.

Still, even if Empire is his least favorite, so what? His opinion on the movies - even if he is their creator - doesn't diminish my own in any way.

If it's out of context, then what's the context? Is there someone at the luncheon who said that his tone of voice or manner was clearly facetious?

He was just giving a round-a-bout compliment to Sid Ganis, by the read of it. I'm not sure why this is prompting such a stink - the man needs to be ridiculed for Greedo shooting first and the poor quality theatrical DVDs, not this

Lucas is clearly complimenting Sid Ganis' publicity skills here. He's saying, "This guy is so good that took a movie nobody should have liked and made everyone like it." I don't know if he said it facetiously. (I hope he didn't; compliments are supposed to be sincere.)

The bit about Empire being the 'worst' movie is only incidental to the point of the statement, and we can't know exactly what Lucas meant by it unless we had access to a transcript of the speech. He might have said, right afterward, "Well, I loved Empire, but it had the worst happy ending ever." Or, he might have said, "God I hated Empire so [bleeping] much." Or, he might have said nothing at all about Empire, because the speech was about Sid Ganis and not Lucas' personal feelings on the Star Wars movies. In any case, the meaning of the statement is unclear without further information. Everyone assumes it means that Lucas hates the "best" movie, but we really don't have proof either way.

Anyway, I don't get why this anecdote is newsworthy. Sure, hate on Lucas for the abortions that were his "prequels", for his digital retconning of the original movies, and his reluctance to release high-quality versions of the original trilogy. But for something he said in an offhand compliment to his publicist? That seems like stretching it to me.

I took it more as a, "Why is he getting an award, his job for Empire wasn't that tough. It was the sequel to a hugely successful film." It's the kind of smart-ass remark I'd make to someone.

I don't think any of us need any more evidence to draw the conclusion that Lucas hasn't created anything worth watching in nearly 20 years (and I'm being VERY generous with Last Crusade). Why do we need this incident to confirm it? Leave the man be to make mediocre toy advertisements and burger deals. That's all he seems capable of nowadays.

I don't care what he or anybody else says about the original Star Wars movies. I liked them. I also didn't like the new ones, how much he likes them himself is of no consequence.

Well he is working on a new Jones, and WW2 movie. After that he is going to do a star wars tv series that will run a 100 episodes. I'm hoping he rips off Firefly just a bit.

Facts:
- Lucas and Hitler both wore moustaches.
- Lucas and Michael Jackson both live on weird ranches (and, incidentally, I used to have respect for both).

Coincidence?

Whether these are any good or not will depend on who he hires to write, direct, and produce them. I mean, if he's not planning on being involved on the creative side at all, these could be pretty good.

Saying not only do you think the new Star Wars TV show will be good, but even insinuating that it'll be a pseudo resurrection of Firefly? You've got some powerful fanboy delusion going on there.

I'm not a fanboy. I just want more sci-fi on tv. I'm just playing the odds in that the more that is on some of them are bound to be decent. Also didn't claim it would be good or not.
