Crackdown reviews and impressions
Monday, February 12th, 2007 - 10:38pm
The game will be released on Feb 20th, and will come with a Halo 3 Beta invite (all copies of Crackdown will have it). I've already put more time into this demo than some full 360 titles, probably 15+ hours.

Since this isn't a spoiler-heavy game, we don't need a separate thread. Just mark spoilers in the standard way and we'll do fine.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

TeamXbox gave it 9.0!
GameSpot gave it 7.8... saying the game felt unfinished.

I call bullsh*t on that Gamespot review. He rated it 7.8 but his tone sounded like it should have been in the 6.5 range. He put more copy into bitching about connecting to a co-op game than he put into actually playing it. Reminded me of the Chromehounds reviews that dedicated a single paragraph to online play.
This sucks, though:

Unfortunatly, from 1000+ people who already playing the game... some been mentioning that co-op is not up to par of Gears level.

The Gamespot review was written by Jeff Gerstmann, he has some of the worst taste in all of gamedom.
He gave Tony Hawk 3 a perfect 10.

I finally downloaded the demo but I still haven't had a chance to play it yet. Guess I'd better get on it.

Sinatar's been sharp on the awesomesauce lately.

I don't really care what most of these reviews say, I had a lot of fun with the demo, in either single or multi-player. So, a week from today I will be stopping by EB and picking up my copy.

I was semi-stoked to get it but if co-op, which was the big sell for me is merely ok, I'll wait for a price drop.

Still planning on getting this. The steps to start a coop game don't sound any worse than Gears.

Still looking forward to it, still planning on buying it soon.
Oh, and Sinatar? Tony Hawk 3 was AWESOME!

Indeed. And beyond that, the demo pretty well exposed the options that would be available for creating co-op games, even if most of them were disabled. I'm not perturbed at all.
On a related note, word on the internets this morning is that the game will see a day one patch to address some co-op connection issues, so that is good news.

The complaint was the means of connection, you can't drop in the middle of someone's game as we previously thought. However, once you get in and start playing, Crackdown has one of the coolest co-op modes I've ever seen. There are no limits, no tethers to the other person, you can do whatever you want and if the other player happens to be in the same area, cool! Otherwise it's just GTA with co-op.

Who'd you play with?
In Gears you can be playing the single player campaign, invite a friend, and they just take control of Dom seamlessly. Crackdown's method does sound worse than Gears.

I played solo. It just felt too arcadish, yet the framerate was crap.

The framerate is almost rock solid unless you blow a TON of crap up at once, and even then it only stutters for a brief second as it calculates the physics of a 100 little pieces of stuff flying around.

My bad. I thought you had to leave the game and start a coop version.

Game seems to be sneaking out on shelves early here and there. I'm ready for some dumb action after a month of MMORPGs!

As the first person who has actually played the retail game let me just say that this game is worth your hard-earned money. I didn't like the demo at all, but seeing the entire game in its beauty instead of a small area with three crime bosses made a major difference. Like Saint's Row, Crackdown is like GTA but refreshing in a way that I don't get bored. It may be the superhero powers I have
I'm not too far in yet, and knowing the lot of you I'll be surpassed in progress percentage by Friday, but it's good. I'm having fun just trying to see what inane achievements I can unlock by jumping off things. I also like how it reminds me of a Freedom Force's GTA. Picking up cars as blunt instruments will never get old to me no matter how many times I do it.
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
Don't just hint (Certis) or brag (Vrikk), tell us where we can find a copy!!!!

I don't have it. I just know they're shipping copies out early with a don't sell date like they tend to with big releases. Must be a Halo 3 beta thing.

Taking a look at the Leaderboards there are a lot of people that have been playing Crackdown for at least two days now.. so I have no idea how everyone got their copies. Mine I got because I know a guy through a guy who et cetra. Since the ship date was only yesterday I'd assume that most people got their copies by some other venue.

I hope the shipping of this game isn't screwed up in the U.S. since today is President's Day.

I doubt it, because even here in Regina at my local Eb they have a ton of copies of Crackdown already but cannot sell them till tomorrow, which is all good, I still am thinking of picking it up tomorrow but I might just wait for a couple days....
I don't know...such a hard decision.
