Now wait a second... Jade's black? How do they get that? Asian, maybe, or Latino, or Mediteranean, or just plain old dark-skinned causasian, but she doesn't look at all black to me.

Maybe she was just designed to be racially ambiguous so anyone could identify with her...

She's Jamaican-Chinese. The Rhinos had a fling with her mom.

Men of Valor (2004) - Dean Shephard - It's fitting that the first AAA Vietnam War title from Medal of Honor publisher Vivendi Universal would feature a black lead considering the disproportionately high number of blacks in the real war. Sadly, the game isn't quite as polished as its WWII counterparts, but it's still good news to see a big name publisher put a black face on the front cover of a big name franchise.

Wow. These guys can't even fact check.

is a special game, but not only because of its variety of play styles or expansive environments or numerous voice cameos. The big overlooked reason San Andreas matters is that this was the first time that a AAA series chose a black protagonist and nobody batted an eye. It wasn't a topic of conversation, it just was. And, for all the potential for stereotyping the "hood" environment offered up, Rockstar North never quite took the easy road. Impressed.

Final installment? No.
GTA 3 is game not a series.

You mean the trainer? They're training, he's not stealing the bike.

Does the arcade one count? If so, and if I am thinking of the same game, then yes I have actually played it.

They also forgot D'Arci from Urban Chaos, who actually was a black woman, as opposed to Jade.

It honestly never occurred to me that Jade was black. I really didn't give any thought to her ethnicity while playing the game.

If my memory serves, it was the exact same game with the final guy being "Mr. Perfect" instead of Mike Tyson. He had the same moves and patterns just a slightly modified sprite. Other than that and the packaging, the game was identical. And it was a travesty. It's like yanking out the two plumbers and calling a game "Super Guys Who Jump on Turtles and Mushrooms."

He was "Mr. Dream", and you're exactly right. I think maybe Thin J is thinking of Super Punch Out or something.

My dad has a black friend (former professional bodybuilder) who now lives in Japan. He tells some good stories about how amazed and frightened the local Japanese people are of him, the way they give him a WIDE berth on public transit and stuff. He is, of course, a nice and gentle guy, but all they see "big brack man!" and scatter. (And it's hilarious to see him standing next to his 4'11" Japanese wife).

Not really related to what you said, but it reminded me of that. And, if you were to make a cartoon charicature of him, it would be something like Barrett.

There's also General Leo Cristophe from FFVI, Dr. Rho Bowman from Anachronox, the Paladin class in Diablo II, the Redguards in Elder Scrolls, and probably others I'm not thinking of. They're out there, there's just not as many of them.
