Any Gentoo Gurus?

I'm using the Gentoo 2006.1 Live DVD to try to get Gentoo installed for my "A Week With" blog project...both the console installer, and the gtk+ installer fail at emerging pciutil-2.2.0-r1.....
Do I have to go from Stage 2, or is there another way of installing Gentoo?
Gentoo is hard.

Wish I could help, have not touched Gentoo since 2004. I remember my experience with it to be fraught with headaches. Had it on my system for about a week before bailing and going back to Slackware, my first true love.

I use gentoo actively and have for a long time. Not sure why PCI utils will fail to emerge tho. What type of motherboard do you have?
I would use a stage 3 install if this is your first time with gentoo.
It's an Emachines T6212, so the board is Via. I'm thinking that I should try it the manual way, instead of using these installers.

I haven't used Gentoo, but have you tried checking the DVD? If you burned it yourself there could be problems with it. I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out why my Kubuntu install DVD wouldn't work, only to find out that there was an error on the disc.

It's something with the installer. I have tried 3 different methods with the installer, using the DVD, the x86 CD, and the AMD64 CD, with both the GTK+ and the Console installers. Every time has failed.
I'm using the textmode install, and typing this via Links. (Links totally, totally rocks, BTW)

The installer is wack. A year ago, I tried to do several stage 2 / 3 installs from the DVD, and it would fail at a different place each time. Very very frustrating.
The textmode install is way more reliable.
Honestly though, I'm beginning to be disillusioned with gentoo. They don't seem to have enough developers to keep projects alive, and they take forever to pickup packages.
It's been an interesting learning experience, but I will probably move to Ubuntu, debian, or centos next.

Oh wow. "A week with..."
I have used Linux for over 8 years on a regular basis and I imagine that I wouldn't get too much into a Gentoo install after "A week with" it. Okay, maybe I would. But I just wouldn't try it. My main box, running CentOS, has been running fine since I installed it over a year ago. That install was quick and painfree. When I bought my PSP recently, getting it to connect to my Linux box so I could transfer music and photos and game demos took a few minutes. I wouldn't touch Gentoo. Ubuntu maybe, but a week with Gentoo and I'd be going to another distro.

I got to day 5, had to switch to Sabayon so that I could actually write about something meaningful.
Like I said, Gentoo is hard.
I really like Ubuntu, but this project is alot of fun...
