I was looking for a Sam & Max thread but my search attempts didn't turn up anything. Feel free to cough me in the right direction.

Early last week I finished up Ep 2 in time to sink into and finish Ep 3 on Saturday. I personally think it's getting better with each release and now I'm eagerly waiting for the next installment. I like how they're tying the episodes together with "in-jokes" and "stuff" from previous episodes left lying around which Sam & Max comment on.

Playing episodes 2 and 3 back-to-back left me with a hankering for some more of this style gaming. So I dug out my dusty copy of Grim Fandango which I never played and started into that on Saturday night.

Anyone else play Ep 3 and have any thoughts?

Edit: added spoiler tag.

Ep 3 is out? Damn! I need to check that out. I wish Gametap could automatically notify you when new episodes were available. I have been pretty thoroughly enjoying the first two, it's like an oldschool Lucasarts adventure game but the puzzles don't suck!

I never played the sam and max series. They're adventure games, right?

What would you call the genre?

Just finished Episode 3 and, while a bit short at around 3 hours of gameplay (would have been even shorter but I got stuck at one point), it's just as much fun as the first two. The Ted E. Bear theme song is an instant classic.

Me too - I dug up my old Sam & Max CDs, downloaded SCUMM VM, and have been having a blast trying to finish it, as I never managed to quite get there the first time around.

Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

Gametap has a weekly newsletter that features the new games and highlighted episode 3 for at least 2 weeks. Be sure its not trapped by your spam folder.

Ep 3 was fun and all but the formula is getting predictable. Solve an intro puzzle, complete 3 tasks involving Bosco, the Rat, and Sybil, stick a car chase in there somewhere and then get trapped in a room until the end of the game.

The last two games messed with that formula enough to make it interesting and less transparant but this one was just raw formula which made it very short and not at all challenging. I enjoyed it, (the whole 1 hour) but Im glad Im not really paying per episode on this.

The humor saves it and makes the game worthwhile. Max cracks me up.

I agree with Poly about the formulaic aspects of these episodes. And yea, the humor and "light style" of gameplay make it work for me. I sit down to each of these games expecting it to be light on challenge and big on humor. I figure it's an easy couple of hours of entertainment.

I did find myself thinking mid-way in episode 3 that they need to mix up the puzzles a bit more. Especially when the using the ketchup gag a second time around - that just seemed lazy to me (and I almost didn't try it 'cause it seemed too obvious).

The Ted E. Bear song is hilarious - as is the "listening device". Genius.
