What music should I have?

I need to round out my music collection as I seem to have a lot of gaps where awesome music should be. For example, I have next to nothing of Jimi Hendrix, Korn, nothing Jazz wise. I also just picked up the NiN and Rush discography to help correct these issues. Obviously this can be used by anyone needing to fill out the collections.

I like those greatest hits type thing since I get the best of a artist. I have the GnR, Deep Purple, Ledd Zepplin, AC/DC, Pink Floyd, Cream/Clapton, U2, Queen and Van Halen ones. More of this type would be nice.

My music list.

Anyone know a better way of getting a catalog of their music?

You're not fooling me, Guitar Hero taught you everything about music

They have fallen, but have you considered Metallica? Master of Puppets is still unrivaled.

If you liked Clapton, get his collaboration with BB king (Riding with the King". BB King is a true master of blues guitar. If you like that, try his older records.

Then if you like that, try exploring stuff like Coltrane's jazz. Personally, I can only listen to a bit of jazz before I get bored, but if you pay attention it's incredible how much creativity those bastards cram in a single song. It's like the new classical music.

If you want to explore the guitar, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Randy Rhoads are pretty much the undisputed dead geniuses of the 70's and 80's.

Then try some Chuck Berry, for a peek at the original guitar hero.

I don't know, there is still a lot of cool music out there. I did enjoy discovering Avenged Sevenfold from Guitar Hero, they're worthy.

I have only a few Metallica songs, only the ones I can stand. I do have Riding with the King already. Good stuff. I have a live recording of Coltrane and Thelonius Monk at Carnegie Hall back from 1957. Good stuff. I have Vaughn's greatest hits so I'll check out Randy Rhoads and Chuck Berry. Never heard of Randy before and I only have one song from Chuck Berry.

David Bowie, Steve Miller Band. Throw some Nick Drake in there. And where's the love for Cheap Trick? They're still touring, man!

Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen.

There's this program called listmaker. I use it to catalog my comics, kind of. It scans directories and makes a list of their contents, but you can choose to only make lists of directories, which depending on how you've sorted your music, would read a lot like a list of artists/albums.

Putting Hendrix and "Korn" in the same sentence deeply offended my sensibilities.

Come on, it's just an example.

Any recommendations for Beatles stuff? I think I have one of their songs.

Bad Company is an excellent band in the same vein as what you are looking for. In particular, the songs "Bad Company," "Movin' On," "Can't Get Enough," "Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy," and "Feel Like Making Love" are fantastic.

Ten Years After is a rare-ish blues-rock band that's extremely underrated. The albums A Space in Time, Watt, and Cricklewood Green are my favorites (in that order)

Stevie Wonder is still great; the album Innervisions has a couple of really spectacular tracks, and "Superstition" on Talking Book is great.

If you like Rush, you would like Yes. Lots and lots of good songs there, and similar style.

There are some rap groups that are superb and will appeal to your taste in rock. Jurassic 5, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Pharcyde are good starters.

In terms of Jazz, John Coltrane is hard to beat, especially on A Love Supreme. I'm a real classic rock kind of guy, but that album is in my top five.

Holler if you pick up any of these and like them

Eek!

Ok, let's see. If you want a compilation, One is pretty good, but you are missing out on a lot (and I mean a lot) of really great music. I think you might enjoy the White Album, as it still feels fairly modern in a lot of areas, but if you want to go straight into what Beatle-maniacs like myself enjoy, pick up Rubber Soul, A Hard Day's Night, and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

So, you seem to have nicely varied tastes, so let me toss a few out, both recent and old:

The Killers / Franz Ferdinand / The Strokes -- some of the better albums in the last few years

Death Cab for Cutie / Postal Service / Interpol / The Shins -- all in the whiny-white-boys camp, but really good too.

Jazz: Mingus: Mingus Ah Um, Miles Davis:Kind of Blue, Chet Baker: Can't Go Home (2 CD Set), Ahmad Jamal: Anything, Coltrane: Blue Train, Love Supreme, or one of several best-ofs.

For Jazz, try UA and Orange Pekoe. UA is way more experimentalist, veering way off the jazz curve at times. Orange Pekoe offers a more "modern" jazz touching on other genres like Big Bang and even electronica. Try out Sora no Koya and la from UA; Modern Lights and Grace from Orange Pekoe. For rock i'd suggest Blankey Jet City, they have some great compilation albums out, The Six, Blankey Jet City 1991-1995 and Blankey Jet City 1996-2000. I'm not too sure what you're going for in this "missing music" category so I could ball-park a few more out there if you'd like to get deeper into what you're looking for.

I'll see your Mule Variations and raise you Rain Dogs.

However, I'm looking at some of your selections, Edwin, and I can see some gaps in between them.

In between The Shins and Ben Folds (Five) should be Elliott Smith. Get all of his stuff. A hardcore Shins fan overheard me earlier today describing the band as "Elliott Smith with backup musicians" and nearly died when he realized it as truth. (Also: the Ben Folds song "Late" is actually about the late Elliott Smith.)

Between Radiohead and Goldfrapp should be Portishead. They seriously ooze style. Got the almost film-noir style femme fatale singer a la Goldfrapp, but not nearly as techno. It's electronic, yes, but after a while you forget that it is, because the sound is so organic and they rarely do any adjustments to the vocals.

And if you end up liking Portishead, grab Hooverphonic, which I would put between them and Goldfrapp. Slightly more electronic than Portishead, but the vocals are not ignored by any stretch.

With the Garden State soundtrack and all of Scrubs soundtrack, you would like Zero 7. Similar to the last two I suggested. However, do not get their "The Garden" album. Their primary singer Sia has hardly a presence there, and it lacks a spark. Be sure to get When it Falls and Simple Things. Listen to "In the Waiting Line" off of the GS soundtrack, and it's pretty indicative of how the rest of those two albums will roll.

With all the Rush you have, you should have Coheed and Cambria. I know people keep saying that to the point that it's irritating, but it's hard to argue the style.

Also: You have three Beatles songs, but no albums. Grab them and John Lennon's solo albums.

Finally: Sigur Ros. It's between Air and Everything Else That Is Good.

Miles Davis has over 101 albums! How the hell am I suppose to get the good stuff? Chet Baker has a ton of stuff too. 18 pages of albums on last.fm.

My favorite Miles Davis stuff: Kind of Blue, Miles Smiles (Circle is one of the most haunting songs I've ever heard), ESP, and In a Silent Way. Kind of Blue is a great place to start to out to see if you're into Miles. It's a classic and highly accessible. If you dig those check out the Herbie Hancock stuff from the same era -Maiden Voyage, Empyrean Isles, and Speak Like a Child.

A great album Jimi did without the Experience is Band of Gypsys. It's a live album and is a bit funkier than some of his earlier recordings.

Hooray for Belgium! Personally I find Hooverphonic to be a bit too polished, but still good. dEUS is friggin' great Belgian (art) rock, and you'll probably like K's Choices first cd too. Oh, and try 2 Many DJ's.
