Highly Anticipated Music of 2007

I found myself trying to defend 2006 as a good year for albums recently, and it was. But compared to the monstrous amount of good material released in 2005 and, now that I've checked out the Upcoming Releases portion of MetaCritic, the potential albums coming out in 2007, I find myself already forgetting the moderate numbers of gems from yesteryear.

Some highlights in the realm of my musical tastes:

January
Of Montreal Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?
The Shins Wincing The Night Away

February
The Aliens [Title TBA]

March
Arcade Fire Neon Bible
Andrew Bird Armchair Apocrypha
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists Living With The Living
Low Drums And Guns
Modest Mouse We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank

April
Blonde Redhead 23
Bright Eyes Cassadaga
Dntel Dumb Luck

May
Wilco Sky Blue Sky

Sigur Ros [Title TBA] 2007-2008

I mean, holy crap.

What else is everybody looking forward to? Come on, admit it. I know there's someone checking the mail every day to see if their pre-ordered copy of "Chinese Democracy" has finally arrived.

The B-52s should have an album coming out at some point this year. That should be interesting. Also, call me crazy ("You're crazy!!!"), but I'm really looking forward to Norah Jones's new album coming in a week.

You're crazy! Incidentally, me too.

It's not Wandering Toast. Except in TF2, where it usually is.

A new Radiohead album will quite likely be showing up this year. I'm definitely picking that one up.

Is rock dead? I don't know any of those bands. Do they rock? Maybe Sigur Ros, which sounds like really depressing emo music to me.

The last album I wanted to come out was Chinese Democracy.

I'm going through an indie phase, though the Breeders and the Pixies are pretty rocking.

Sigur Ros is some amazing music. They're from Bjorkland. The first time I heard one of their albums I couldn't tell if he was just making up sounds or speaking in another language (turns out, he's done both. One of their albums involves a completely made up language, the others are in Icelandic.) But not knowing what they're saying doesn't affect your enjoyment of the music at all, because whatever they're doing, you can feel it.

Watch some of the videos on their uk site. http://www.sigur-ros.co.uk/media/dldvideo.php

I recommend definitely checking out the one for Glosoli. I love that song.

A friend of mine describes Sigur Ros as being amniotic. She thought it felt like being back in the womb, protected and amazed. It's a pretty good way of describing it.

You left out Bloc Party, which drops in Feb.

Otherwise, looks like a great year for music.

New Jesu album, Conqueror is out in February. Beautiful heavy shoegazing guitars - highly recommended. Also, a chap named Elvis Perkins (his real name - he's actor Anthony "Psycho" Perkins' son) releases his debut album Ash Wednesday, also in February. Check out his myspace page and listen to the title track.

At least Porl is playing on the new album, which should make it interesting. I still think Jason is the worst drummer ever, and Robert's singing has gone downhill over the last 10 years. But I'm a sucker and I'll still get it when it comes out.

If you like The Postal Service I'd give Dntel a chance. He's the guy who does the music portion of TPS. He's already got one album out, Life Is Full of Possibilities, and it's pretty good, and the Deathcab guy even guests on a track or two (off the top of my head, at least the track called "This is the Dream of Evan and Chan" so it even feels like Postal Service B-Sides at times.

Anyone who says the Pixies aren't rockin' needs a good caning, yeah. Although I'm pretty leery of the new album. Heroes should stay dead. Only way to not get disappointed.

I'm looking forward to the new Modest Mouse and NIN, possibly the new Smashing Pumpkins.

Also, LiquidMantis, the new Waits boxed set is very good. You can get it for a good price on Amazon. Only $28.97.

There were extra spaces before I copy/pasted it, and I thought about going back and putting them in again. But I'm lazy. And it is kind of funny how they run together.

Anyway, I know I have music tastes slightly tangential to the mainstream, but I was mostly interested in what everyone's looking forward to, stuff that I might have missed or bands I just never got around to checking out. Like I had no idea a new NIN album was on the way. I wasn't a fan of "With Teeth" though, it was too high school poetry/dogeared copy of a rhyming dictionary for me, but Trent can always step up and release another solid record.

On April 16 the band will release their new full-length album, "Year Zero", which ostensibly will be halo 23. In Trent Reznor's words, the album will sound very different from everything he's done until now and there is a fair possibility that some of the fans will dislike the new material. This most probably will happen, as it happened with every NIN studio album to date.

Trivia:
*Trent Reznor's first name is Michael.
*Trent is only 5'6" (167cm)
*Prior to NIN, Trent played in bands such as Option 30 and Exotic Birds.
*Trent Reznor appeared in the 1987 Michael J Fox film "Light of Day" playing in a band.
*Trent's favorite candy is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
*Contrary to popular belief, "Suck" is technically a cover and not an original. The song was originally performed by the band Pigface off the album "Gub"(1991), in which Trent is given vocal and writing credits. The song was later re-recorded for the Nine Inch Nails EP Broken (1992) as a hidden track.
