Great night: Saw Pan's Labyrinth and got my PSP
Sunday, January 21st, 2007 - 1:09am
What a great night. After a week that saw me bust up my other pinkie and have some bad stuff happen at work I get a refund check in the mail + my wife offered to chip in on my recently desired PSP. Picked that up today finally and saw Pan's Labyrinth.
I'm sure the PSP will be cool. I might comment on that later. But the movie was incredible. If it's your bag (I'm not even sure what bag it is, but read a review to see), definitely go and see it. It's my top movie of the year with a bullet.

I really want to see Pan's Labyrinth. I loved The Devil's Backbone, and everything I've read about Pan's Labyrinth makes me believe it'll be even better.
Alas, there's little chance of getting to see it in the theater for me, at least not in any form I'll understand. Which is a bit of a bummer.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
Dag. I thought this wasn't out here until next weekend. I could have seen it last night. Oh well. Next weekend, perhaps. It looks great, though.

I saw the movie just today. Afterwards, my girlfriend and I went to the mall and she remarked on how she didn't realize that the PSP was $200, I guess she thought its cost was closer to that of the DS lite. I also felt a small, slight twang of desire for it.
The movie was great.
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
I was pretty happy to see Pan's Labyrinth playing at not one, but two theatres here in Edmonton. Often a movie like this might turn up in the art house theatres a few weeks or months after everywhere else, so it was nice to see the movie in a pretty full mainstream theatre.
The movie was great but the experience was marred by absolutely the worst kind of kind of people sitting behind us who would just not shut up despite repeated shushes from all over the theatre.
"Is the whole movie in spanish?"
"I don't know what's going on!"
One of their cellphones even went off!
We did enjoy the movie at least, and being in the movie watching kind of mood we rented The Descent and The Proposition after, which were both very good.

That's too bad. I love how really good foreign language films can get you so entranced that you forget you're reading subtitles. This is one of those movies. But you have to have a good audience and it sound like you didn't. In situations like that (my wife and I see about 50 movies a year in the theater, it's a shared hobby) I will go to the manager and demand my money back unless they actually send the usher in. One of three things happens. The idiots get kicked out, I get my money back or the idiots shut up. No matter what I win.
What I really hate these days are the jokers who will text during the movie. They have these giant bright screened cell phones and they text the entire movie...

I didn't realize the movie wasn't in English until you all mentioned it in this thread. I was seriously looking forward to seeing it until I heard that it was in another language. I still am interested in seeing it, but not being the fastest reader in the world, I feel like I am spending the entire movie reading rather than seeing what is happening on the screen. I feel like I am missing out on the feel of the entire scene if I am concentrating on reading. Though I thought this was how I was going to feel when I went to see Kung Fu Hustle, and I ended up really enjoying the movie....so maybe this movie will surprise me in the same way.
I just wish I was a faster reader
I don't know why I read slower than others. I think I concentrate on what I am reading too much, sometimes rereading sentences and paragraphs multiple times to make sure I didn't miss anything. I've noticed this with Brain Age. Even at my best, my wife still beats me by about 1 word/sec on the reading tests, though she couldn't tell you anything about what she read, while I can nearly quote the entire story back to her from memory. I do really well at the word memory game, usually remembering 3x as many words as her, hehe.

About the PSP, congrats! Hope you find it as useful as I have. I'm not even able to use Homebrew on mine (updated to the latest firmware), and I still have found it very useful as an MP3 player at work, playing games when I'm away from home, checking and sending gmail from wi-fi hotspots, carrying around a digital photo album at all times, and in the future I plan on converting some TV shows or DVDs to MP4 to take with me on an upcoming trip. Plus they have enabled WMA and Flash with the newer firmware, so you can download all kinds of flash games and play them through the browser from the memory stick!

You won't have a problem, I don't think. In a good theater especially. The subtitles are large and the dialogue is not so rapid as to make it hard to keep up. Plus it's Spanish as opposed to Chinese or Klingon. So you can almost understand it as well, you know. At least I could. It's worth taking a chance on. My best movie of the year, maybe one of my favorite movies ever.

I really liked Pan's Labyrinth. I was actually expecting a bit more fantasy sequences, but the other "part" of the movie completely made up for it with it's engaging story and characters. Yes, it was disturbing, violent, and sad, but it was top notch. I really was hoping the fantasy portions were fleshed out, but I know what the movie was trying to achieve, and it worked.
Excellent movie. Very dark (as in literally dark) but the subtitles are oh so easy to follow. I can't wait to see this in High Def.

No one commented on the irony of DSGamer now being PSPGamer. Or maybe that's old news.

No worries though, mine do too.
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
I think what I've come to grips with (aside from my almost pathalogical need to keep the stuff I own to a minimum, stemming from childhood guilt about "posessions) is that I do best when I play EXACTLY what I want to be playing in the moment. Even if I know I'm going to sell said system later. So I played the heck out of my DS, then my PS2, enjoying Amplitude, Frequence, Katamari, etc. Now I'm enjoying all the music/puzzle games for the PSP and Jet Set Radio Future and KOTOR on the XBox.

I didn't mind the subtitles in the movie. A good berating sounds so much more powerful in a romantic language.
Got any toast?
Apparently Guillermo del Toro (the writer/director) wrote the English subtitles himself to make them as clear and concise as possible. My spanish is still pretty weak so I had to read most of the subtitles and they were never unclear or overlong. Just another little thing about the movie that was done very well.

Has anyone else seen this in the past week? I am really curious and likely to go, just wondered if there was any more feedback on it.

Awesome news, Matt!
Also, DSG (and anyone) - there are some threads around here about installing and running the latest hacked firmwares to be able to do whatever you want with your PSP (right now I'm playing my UMD of GTA:LCS, and have FF7 and a rip of the UMD of Spectral Souls on my memory card, as well as some TV episodes and various old-school emulators).
I'm happy to help out if anyone has any questions, etc.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to make the jump to the custom firmware. I'm partly tempted so I don't have to pack around UMDs and deal with load times (playing the Demo of the Halloween LocoRoco and the real thing, it's clear that the load times make a difference), but I'm scared of bricking it and I really like Sony's interface, etc.

Oh, and I saw Pursuit of Happyness this weekend and wept like a little baby at the end. Two great movies in a row. I think this has been stealthily a great year for movies.

0% chance of bricking it.
The Dark Alex "custom firmware" is exactly identical to the existing sony firmware... in other words, the features and interface are exactly the same. You simply gain the ability to run homebrew, PS1 games, and ISOs more or less. There are other features, but if you don't use them, the interface is exactly the same. Plus, it comes with an "uninstaller" that will put you back doen to 1.50, and you can always just re-flash Sony's original if you so desire.
may be true, although technically both of those came out LAST year
edit:
I know there's really no point in trying to argue with you on this (you're someone who has a particular set of quirks and beliefs
)... but for anyone else interested in the downgrader and new firmware, I say go for it. It's awesome.

I concur, the Custom Edition firmware is fantastic.

Not sure what feedback you're looking for, exactly. I can offer another recommendation of praise, though. It's very good and you should definitely see it.
Note: It's a fairy tale but it's rated R. My friend didn't realize this and turns to me at one point and says, "I can't believe I just saw that in a kids' movie!" "This is R, dude." "Oh." And at the showing my brother went to, some stupid parents brought their 4 year old and left. If they can't read the rating for a movie, how do they expect themselves to read the subtitles?

After getting the feedback on how the custom firmware works and reading the comment elsewhere about being able to play Symphony of the Night I am now considering doing this.
I just need to find a copy of GTA:LCS now. I really really want to play SOTN. I've *never* played it in my life. And Sony won't sell it to me, sooooo.

More voices in a chorus of praise is fine.

My fiancee and I saw a preview for Pan's Labyrinth recently, and she became very interested. However, I'm a little worried that the non-fantasy portions will kill it for her - she doesn't like movies with long, unhappy bits. Any thoughts?

It's definitely not a happy movie. But it's not supposed to be. It's a genius movie, though, which is worth seeing. There are happy parts sprinkled throughout, though. I mean, part of living in the fantasy land sometimes, is that the protaganist has things happen to her that bring hope and joy and escape. But there is pain and chaos and ugly things in both the worlds. It's still very worth seeing, IMHO.
It's kind of like the movie I saw this weekend, the Pursuit of Happyness. Man, is that movie ever a downer. There are small blips of happiness, but it's torturous for most of the movie. But at the end comes the happy and like I said earlier, I cried and cried. I was practically sobbing. Maybe hit a little too close to home. I was never homeless, didn't have to raise a kid. But the whole being poor and working your way up, fighting for your dignity. It was painful to watch for most of the movie, but the payoff was worth it.

Honestly, I think its this generations "Diary of Anne Frank". The twist is that the fantasy world is much more realized in Pann's Labrynth and the girl has some measure of freedom to roam and spends most of her time in the fantasy world. Anne Frank clings to her innocence and child life in a small loft rooted in the real world.
The music was absolutely wonderful and a fine complement to this terrific movie.
Being fangoriously devoured by a gelatinous monster.
DSG - my fiancee won't see The Pursuit of Happyness, for the reasons you describe. Sounds like Pan's Labyrinth is gonna be a no-go for her as well.

I'm going to see Pan's tonight. But I wanted to point out that if you go to the movie's website, you can listen to the whole soundtrack via streaming.
Best soundtrack in years. Probably best soundtrack since Gattaca, or maybe since Cowboy Bebop. I don't usually like classical to actually sit down and listen to, but it's all I have on when I'm doing homework. Truly beautiful stuff.
