Saa-weeet! It's been a long time coming, but now it's just over a month away. Here's hoping it will actually run on my rig ^_^;

This has become a "Wait and See" title for me. From initial beta report by fellow GWJ'ers, to a few previews I have read, all it seems to be is the same old RTS but on a much, much larger scale. Hopefully I am wrong and this is not the case.

I hope they release a demo based on the gold code, otherwise its strictly wait and see. Not just for performance reason, the gameplay just didn't click with me.

The beta was not a DX10 required title. I was also surprised how well it ran on my aging rig (2800+ with X800XL). It doesn't look state-of-the-art, but considering the size of some of these battles I was surprised. A Total Annihilation "sequel" is long overdue. I can't wait to start tearing this one up.

I think it's telling when the Games for Windows previewer talked about preferring to play SC from the way zoomed out view with just the tactical shapes on the map. That's too bad. I loved TA and wanted Chris Taylor to do better than Dungeon Siege. Looks I'll be in the wait-and-see camp too.

I'm all over this.

The idea that this scales to a point where patrolling your borders and sneak attacks are vital to success makes me happy inside. I can't wait to build up some artillery right next to an enemy base with the help of a jammer bot.

I've heard the gold game is much more reasonable on system requirements than the beta.

I'm also getting this regardless. Total Annihilation with big maps is fine by me. I'm sad that the AI doesn't seem to have been upped to include the more advanced tactics that you might find on true grand strategy, but I'm sure human opponents won't have such limitations.

We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Anyone played the beta late enough to give us an idea of what the gold version might be like? I really hope the game is much better than what the beta had to offer.

The singleplayer demo is up on Fileplanet now. I'd guess it's more representative of the full product than the beta was

I've looked on the other various file sites but it looks like Fileplanet is the only place with a link up right now.

Did you play the demo, Thin_J? I know your gaming time is open these days Anyway, how is it?

I can't wait to play this, my only regret is that it comes out on Feb 20th, and I'll probably be wrapped up in Crackdown at that time.

That hurts man. You're not supposed to rub it in

But to answer your question.. no I haven't played it yet. It's a gig, and my internet connection is ass on the bandwidth in. A 1 gig download is about 3 hours for me. Combine that with my complete unwillingness to pay for fileplanet (which currently seems to be the only place to get the demo) making me wait in line, and I might be able to play the demo about 4 this afternoon.

*edit*

Nevermind! It's up on filefront now

I've got my download going at 1 meg per second so I should have some impressions of it in the next 30 mins or so. I wasn't too hot on the beta so I'm interested to see if anything has changed in the near final code.

Damn, i started one download on filefront but that is super slow at 13.6 KB/s. So i was waiting in line over at fileshack as well but the stupid download window didn't play a sound so when i was browsing i missed my five minute window. Now i have to wait 30 mins instead of 8 to start downloading....

Did they keep the "Dead units stay on the battlefield as salvage" thing from TA? That was really great.

I'll probably take a look at the demo to see what has changed since the first beta, but I'm not exactly enthusiastic right now.

I was looking forward to SupCom and really, really wanted to like it, but the beta somehow didn't enlighten me. The build-up phase takes way too long for my personal taste and is really boring. I was anticipating the spectacular mass battles - which aren't spectacular at all since you're zoomed out a lot and watch icons moving around half of the time. God, I wish they had hired someone who has a clue about interface design, too.

We had some really nice moments though way back when we were playing it in the office. The first time we tried out the super weapons. So one guy build this huge Independence Day-alike flying saucer and the other guy simply went "Holy sh*t!" He finally made it to shoot down that thing - unfortunately right above his base. So, the thing went down, destroyed his powergrid and other buildings and the remains stayed there as a testament to an awesome moment.

That said, I'm glad there's a company out there to make such a game. They always said it was going to be "hardcore" and that's what it is. I hope it sells well enough though or GPG probably won't churn out anything other than Dungeon Siege titles in the future.

What's a Tag?

I gave the demo a whirl.

I like it so far.

PRomising. I thought the demo ran smooth. The quality seems high. I want to hook up dual monitors, but it looks like you need a 2nd vid card. (edit: scratch that, one vidcard only.) I Like the scale and the zooming out.

The downside is you're not looking at much of the map on one screen if you're zoomed in enough to get any kind of detail out of your units. Also so far it doesn't seem much different than most rts games except the scale is much larger.

Well I played it and it is unchanged from the beta. The interface is still psychotically huge (remember bitching about AOE3's huge UI, SupCom's is about 2x as big), the game still runs really poorly once you mobilize a large army (which is the supposed appeal of the game) and once you start fighting it is entirely a hands off affair.

I'm sure some people will go gaga over this, but it is everything I think an RTS shouldn't be. Slow, boring and completely lacking in tactical gameplay decisions.

You were expecting tactics? Even Total Annihilation was oriented almost totally toward overall strategic choices. There was never much by the way of tactics involved.

If I want to worry about tactical decision making I'll start up Company of Heroes. If I want to launch a hundred aircraft bomber force at an enemy at the same time my off-site artillery is pounding it's air defenses to dust.. I'll play Supcom.

As for the performance issue, what kind of setup are you running it on Sin? I didn't have any performance problems later on in the beta even with 1,000 plus units on just my side roving around the map and multiple battles going on. Framerates always did get a little lower as the game went on, but I never had any drops below 40 or 50, and in the early game it tends to be in the 100+ range.

I attacked with about 150 bombers and my framerate dropped to single digits. p4 3.4 ghz, 2 gig ram, Radeon X850XT. This is at 1024x768 with medium textures, low shadows, medium LOD and everything else on high, no AA.

Was I "expecting" tactics? Not really, I wasn't expecting anything.

The game was designed to take full advantage of dual and quad core chips. I'm curious to see what level of performance increases one can expect.
