Now there was some understandable criticism that this was a fake, but IGN confirmed that the videos were real...but the projects on hold pending the resolution of pesky licensing issues. Guess the car won't be a Chrysler 300 and the CGI Bill Murray will probably be out, too.

Skimming over the forums at Evil Avatar revealed another important angle: Sony owns the Ghostbusters IP. Chances are that if it gets made, it could be a PS3 exclusive.

I want to say "Sega", but it's only a guess. Does Sony own the license to the Ghostbusters, or the other Ghostbusters from the 70s?

They should be holding the general licensing rights since Columbia produced the movies. Might be possible that Activition still retained some rights for games since they made the 8-Bit ghostbusters game.

It would be very cool to get to play a good Ghostbusters video game.

The chances of a small developer getting all the character, movie, music, etc. licenses for a project like this are very slim. It'll be a huge legal hurdle to cross, probably requiring a publisher with significant industry muscle to pull it off.

Anyone else remember the Ghostbusters game from the 8-bit days? I played on the Atari 800, but it was probably out for the Amiga and other platforms as well.

I noticed a distinct lack of traps in the Destructoid videos. The collateral damage is nice though. Digital Bill Murray is a bit uncanny valley for me.

Hmm apparently it's something being worked on for the XBox 360. from that IGN link:

Bostjan Troha, CEO of ZootFly, told IGN UK: "We are very glad to see the overwhelming response to the Ghostbusters prototype movies. What you've seen is indeed in-game footage of early prototypes on the Xbox 360, running on ZootFly's proprietary engine. Due to licensing issues, further development of the Ghostbusters game hit a bump on the road. But everybody here at ZootFly is working actively on resolving the challenges with the owners of the Ghostbusters IP.

"Not to lose the momentum, a part the ZootFly team is currently working on an original game called TimeO, which is closely related to Ghostbusters. The game follows the adventures of two die-hard New Yorkers. They get trapped deep in the shadow world of a parallel New York. The city itself is a war machine threatening to wipe out our world and they have three days to stop it. As soon as the Ghostbusters IP issue is resolved, the whole team will go back to Ghostbusters."

I did a rough job of translation with that

ZootFly wrote:
Hey yeah we're working on a Ghostbusters game, of course we don't have the IP to one of the biggest franchises that has been notorious IP holdouts, but we're sure we'll resolve that with magic wands. Meanwhile, we're working on this original game that's closely related that nobody would've heard about before this happened. We'll get back right on the impossible Ghostbusters project as soon as our elves arrive in the mail. But remember our other game, the game that we desperately need press for! It's gonna be great, unlike the Ghostbusters game which will probably never happen.

The other game sounds sort of cool though, but it's probably not.

I played the version on the Sega Master System, I think it was the same game? There was an arcade version with the Real Ghostbusters cartoon style, from Data East. Not bad for a quarter-eater, but nothing to go crazy over. Also there is an Extreme Ghostbusters game based on another cartoon/style- I think the kids who showed up later in the Real Ghostbusters?- that was a platformer on consoles.

Seeing these vids got my mind flooded with memories of the hours I spent playing the original game on the Commodore 64 and Atari 130XE. Absolutely brilliant game for its day. A new FPS type Ghostbusters game would be awesome but were it to come to light, would anyone buy it? I suspect many people here would but most young people now don't even know about Ghostbusters.

There should be a TMNT game based on the upcoming movie, made my Ubisoft. Looks rad. Will that ease the pain?

I totally agree with Pyro, this all looks like a big PR stunt. Too bad tho, but what is a ghostbusters game without traps anyway?

Luigi's Mansion? Oh wait, Luigi had a vacuum cleaner didn't he.

I also think this was just a PR stunt and it'll end up being vaporware.

So is there a new movie coming out or something? To bad it did look interesting, and multiplayer capturing ghost could be cool. It's beens so long I didn't even ntice the lack of traps. Maybe they've improved the technology of the guns.

As far as I know, Aykroyd really, really wanted to do another one for years, but it never came together.

Funnily enough, I just got myself the two movies on DVD a few weeks ago. That said, I'm totally in the mood for a new GB game or movie. Of course, a new movie would probably be rather awkward given given the age and the shape of the original actors. Half of the movie would be spent on "We're too old and cranky for this sh*t" jokes.

The whole thing strikes me as a "quick n' dirty" Unreal Engine 3 mod. So traps probably would've taken too much time to code.

POTENTIAL SPOILERS IF THEY EVER GET OFF THEIR ASSES AND MAKE A SEQUEL...

Aykroyd & Ramis wrote a treatment for Ghostbusters 3: Ghostbusters In Hell but Murray refused to do it which led to a halt on the production. There are some trademarking rights issues outside of who actually owns the IP that give all three the ability to shutdown any Ghostbusters related projects. One of the reasons Murray refused to do it was that Venkman was supposed to die and end up in a Hell version of New York City. The Hell version of NYC would be a parallel world reversal of the current version of New York City with everything clean and shiny and all of the citizens would be nausiatingly friendly and nice. Venkman would learn about a threat to the real world from Hell (its running out of room or something) and eventually figures out how to get back to the otherside so that he can haunt Egon & Stantz and warn them. When he gets back though, he finds out that they are older and not prepared for the upcoming crisis (time moves differently between the worlds). So, they decide to hire on a younger team of Ghostbusters which was supposed to include Ben Stiller, Ben Affleck, Chris Rock and Chris Farley. The actual ending of it was never revealed but the rumor was that Stantz & Egon die in the final battle versus the Devil and are stuck haunting the Ghostbusters building with Venkman forever.

YMMV with the rumors and all that... In a way, I'm glad they never filmed it. I'm happy with how it ended after the first movie and they'll never recapture that magic they hit the first time.

Sounds about what I read, well, except for the whole dying part. I also read one where Venkman was supposed to be a "telephone cameo" wishing the Ghostbusters luck on their new "adventures".
