Verizon FIOS experiences?
Thursday, January 4th, 2007 - 11:44pm
Fiber-based Verizon FIOS broadband is finally available in my sticks, and I am contemplating switching to it. Cablevision, which I am using currently, has grown laggy and flaky.
Is anyone here (except the very early adopted TheGameGuru) using FIOS already? What are your experiences in terms of robustness, sustainability of throughput, and the asshole-ishness level of their customer service?
Thanks!

I don't have it myself, but an online friend absolutely raves about it. Unbelievable speeds with very low latency and no packet loss at all. He made it sound absolutely freaking amazing.
I know nothing about their customer service, but it IS Verizon. I wouldn't have high expectations.
I've heard nothing but good things about it. Oh, and I now officially hate you.

I'm looking into it today. It's supposed to be available here, and I'm sick of Comcast jerking me around.

I have been calling Verizon at least once every two weeks to see if it is ready in my area (Central MA). I currently have their DSL service, and it is OK for the price, but BF2142 tends to suffer the slower connection. I have had nothing but pleasant, productive experiences with Verizon's support, and greatly look forward to switching off of Charter for TV and getting the speed boost of FIOS. I'll keep you all updated when I get it, it should be fairly soon.

Can you use your own ISP with this service or are you stuck with Verizons?

For all who live in such times, it is not for them to decide. All we get to decide is what to do with the time given to us
I live about 30 miles outside of Boston and have had FIOS internet for almost 2 years. I have the 15/2 service for about $50/month. Amazingly I just found out this week that Verizon bumped that service to 20/5 at the same price (just need to call them to activate it which I hope to do today). The FIOS internet service has really been rock solid. I honestly have no complaints about it. Anytime my internet has dropped it's been something with my router (WRT54G running DD-WRT firmware - handles the FIOS speeds fine). FIOS currently uses PPoE rather than DHCP which I *think* can be an issue for some routers. Keep in mind they provide a D-Link router with the install - I just wanted to keep my WRT54G since I like the DD-WRT capabilities.
Two months ago Verizon launched FIOS-TV in our town. We signed up for that. I can give more impressions on TV if you'd like but I figure your initial interest is in the internet service.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Awesome, thanks!
I am definitely signing up then. Will post up the impressions after the install for those who're interested (or simply to gloat to bagga).

It's freakin amazing for the price. No problems whatsoever since I got it.

Oh, regarding the comment I made about the 15/2 service being upgraded to 20/5 at the same price. To be clear the press release I saw about this was on Verizon's site and dated 12/18. It specifically referred to FiOS customers in MA and RI. I'm not sure if this applies to FiOS in other states.
I called Verizon before lunch today to upgrade to the 20/5. I got kicked around by different CSR's and finally sat on hold for 15 minutes. I gave up and ate lunch. I then tried again 5 minutes ago and BAM, first CSR I found did it without any hassles.
Anyone else here using FiOS-TV? I'm curious what other's thoughts are on it. Overall I'm happy with it - just a few minor gripes/complaints that I hope to see them address in time.
EDIT: Just saw your screenshot Gorilla after I made this post. Looks like you have access to the 20/5 service - sweet. I think you'll be pleased. I was amazed with the quality and professionalism of the install (both Internet and later TV). They blew away all the Comcast and DirecTV installers I've suffered through.

I almost put that. But I didn't.

20/5 for $50 a month! I pay almost that now for 6mb/512k.
I pay that for 1.5mb/768k.
There's no alternatives either.

Thin_J - you're somewhere near me right? Do you have Cincinnati Bell or Bell South? I have my DSL through Bell South, they offer tiered speeds based on how much you want to spend.
Cincinnati Bell (Zoomtown DSL) is the only thing we can get here. We're basically stuck with Zoomtown or Comcast and cable service out here is awful. A friend of mine a few streets over has his internet service through Comcast and it really is a lot faster than Zoomtown, but it's down a few times a month.
Zoomtown does offer the higher tier service.. but the speed increase is rather small and the price increase is not.
For now I'll have to continue my monthly ritual of typing my phone number in on Verizon's FIOS site, having it tell me service isn't available in my area, and then weeping like a girl right there at my keyboard.

I checked a while back and it wasn't available this far south. Has it expanded farther down into Kentucky yet? Is it ever going to?
I think the last time I complained about this someone mentioned that you might be "in the know" about that sort of thing

OK, my Verizon experience #1: they were supposed to show up today for the installation, and didn't. My setup was "scheduled, but not assigned to any technician's queue". Huh? Now rescheduled for tomorrow.

ahh yes.. FIOS is great..awesome.. Verizon is the same.. brutally awful and horrendous to deal with as a company.
Pray your FIOS never goes out or has an issue.. (which thankfully in the year and half I had it only happened one time and it was mostly my fault)

The install was done today. The guy was super nice, knowledgeable, courteous, and very professional. Nothing like the usual Verizon plumbers. Even nicely dressed and faintly smelling of some fragrance.
He was very thorough and patient with me as I discussed the setup options, and produced zero mess as he worked. No garbage, no tracks on the carpet, no scratches walls or furniture. Just a couple of new boxes blinking on the wall in the garage, a new big-ass Actiontec 10/100-802.11b/g router in the office, and a freaking fast connection!
Speaking of which: I went for the 10/2Mbps plan for $39, simply to wait and see if that's enough. I figure, I can always bump it up with a simple phone call if I decide I want MORE bandwidth. Here's a shapshot of my CNet's Bandwidth Meter stats:
As they said in the ancient 3Dfx ad, it's so fast, it's kind of ridiculous.
