I haven't been around the GWJ community for long and I haven't visited in awhile, but I do know that it isn't big on the PS3 This past weekend I was able to pick one up, though, so I thought I'd share my impressions of the system:

Backwards Compatability - So far so good. I tried out Sky Odyssey, Shadow of the Colossus and Dragon Quest VIII and they all seemed to work just fine. I haven't played any of those in awhile so it's hard to say for certain but I do think there's a bit more aliasing than the games had on the PS2. Not really that big of a deal though. Thank goodness Sony was smart enough to let you create virtual memory cards on your PS3 hard drive so you don't need to buy adaptors or anything.

Interestingly enough Sky Odyssey actually runs better on the PS3! The original only put out analog sound, not optical, but the audio is just fine on the PS3. The really interesting thing is that the framerate is better! On the first level there were a couple of spots that always had slowdown as you approached some falling rocks... that slowdown was gone when I played it on the PS3 yesterday. It was actually quite cool

Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom - Pretty standard action hack-and-slash game. It was the first game I fired up and at first I was amazed at how much aliasing there was. Checked my projector and it said it was running in 540p instead of 720p. Went back to the PS3 system settings and realized I forgot to check 720p as a valid signal for my projector. Fired up the game again and it looked far better. I can see where the downscaling would be a big issue for people who have HDTVs that don't support 720p.

The game itself is pretty decent. Only three characters which is kind of a bummer. It also feels much more actiony than dungeon crawlery; the areas seem smaller and while I'm not far in it seems like the game tends to stop you in an area while you fight lots and lots of guys that keep spawning. I was expecting somethig closer to Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance or Champions of Norrath but it feels more like the recent Gauntlet game. The combat animations are kinda cool though and it runs smooth enough. Nothing new but I have been itching for some hack-and-slash action so it gets the job done.

Resistance: Fall of Man - I've spent the most time with Resistance and I'm really enjoying it. Some of the level transisions are really odd, the level just sorta ends really abrupt, but that's pretty minor. In terms of visuals and gameplay I'd say it's a cross between Timesplitters, Call of Duty and Half-Life 2. In terms of pacing it feels very much like HL2.

The game looks very nice. Nothing really stands out or pops out at you like I've seen in other games. Take Rainbow Six: Vegas for example; you'll be running around and think "Wow that glass looks awesome" or "Man that shrink wrap around those crates looks amazing!" I haven't had any moments like that in Resistance. There's some pretty cool level design and architecture and the draw distance is impressive but the whole game has sort of a muted feel to it, very similar to Call of Duty 3. The more I play, though, the more impressed I am with the visuals. It has a very unique style to it and there are plenty of little details that are extremely cool if you take the time to look at them rather than single elements really standing out.

Resistance runs really smooth which is good. I'm actually impressed at how well the PS3 controller works for FPS control. The dead zone is gone from the PS2 controller which is huge; this is probably the first FPS I've played using a Playstation controller that just felt natural. I still wish the sticks themselves had a little more resistance when moving them (like Microsoft's controllers) but it's pretty minor.

The story isn't anything too special right now but it's interesting enough to keep me moving forward through the game. There have been some tough sections which I appreciate, it certainly hasn't all been a cakewalk. In typical Insomniac style the weapons are awesome and they have little secrets for you to try and unlock as well.

Tried out some multiplayer and 40 player games are virtually lag-free which is pretty amazing. The online interface is really good, which isn't too surprising considering Insomniac did a good job with the online portion of the Ratchet & Clank games on the PS2. It pulls your username from your PS3 online account but I couldn't tell if it actually pulls your friends list or not.

Demos and the Sony Store

I was surprised how much stuff was up on the Sony store already. Lemmings is pretty cool, it seems like a great remake that works well with the controller and has some pretty cool graphical tricks here and there. I might have to pick that up at some point. Blast Factor is a straight-up Geometry Wars clone; it seemed okay but nothing too amazing. Cash Guns Chaos is a straight-up Smash TV close that I didn't really care for. GoSudoku is just that but entertaining if you like sudoku puzzles. Plenty of demos up already, the best being Motorstorm so far.

I like that everything on the store is listed in US dollars, not stupid points The interface is pretty decent, feels very much like iTunes. Navigating is kidna clunky though as it's just using their web browser but it's neat that they can easily do whatever they want with the UI. Hopefully they'll get background downloads working.

I will say that as soon as I saw Lemmings and GoSudoku on the Sony store I immediately thought, "Why aren't these games on Live Arcade?" With Gripshift coming soon (and Tekken 5 hitting at some point) I'm hoping that the Sony store will really show some strength throughout the console's life.

Motorstorm Demo

To be honest, this is one of the reasons I wanted a PS3 and the demo confirms I made a good choice At first I actually wasn't all that blown away by the visuals but the more I play the more impressed I am with the game. It looks very nice and it also runs extremely smooth... even with a full field of cars piling up into each other I still haven't noticed any slowdown.

The physics and controls will be hit-and-miss for some. It feels a little floaty but I think it has a good sense of speed, which didn't come through in the early videos I had watched online. I really like the computer AI; you'll see cars slamming into each other, crashing at corners, flying off cliffs, ramming into you... no two laps feel the same and it certainly adds some personality to the game.

Hopefully the US version will have the online mode they've been talking about. I can only imagine how much fun it'll be to race against other people. Even if the game is lacking a bit in modes I can still see myself putting a lot of time into the game. I've already played through the demo a dozen times or so and I still keep going back for more.

The Controller

Wow is it light. The syncing thing is a little odd but it works. The first time you use a controller with a PS3 you need to hook it up via USB so the controller can figure out what PS3 to talk to; guessing it actually stores that in some flash memory on the controller. From then on you can turn on the PS3 with the controller, it remembers what controller number it is, etc. Seems to work well.

Wish the analog sticks were tighter but it's not bad. As I mentioned before the dead zone on the analog control is gone which is awesome. The face buttons also feel a little more pressure sensitive which is good. I don't like the "triggers" for L2/R2 though. You gotta pull them in a ways but they are still straight down rather than curved out so my hand kinda gets stretched too much and was getting sore; haven't quite figured out the most comfortable way to hold it. All they needed to do was curve the triggers out a bit and I think it would've fixed the proble.

Bluray

Not much to say here. The system came with Talledaga Nights; we watched that last night and it looked fine but at a glance I never would've guessed it was a HD movie. I also picked up Corpse Bride and it certainly looked good. Not sure it looks good enough to justify getting a device just for HD movie playback but it was really good looking. The system doesn't come with a remote so you have to use the PS3 controller as your remote control, which is fine.

That's about it for now. I'll share more thoughts as they come up!

I didn't compare side-to-side so it was hard to say. I think it was the same, although I didn't play much either. There was more aliasing but not enough to make me not play the game. Putting it in did make me want to play the game more, though, so maybe I'll work through it some again and see if I notice any differences as I go. I was just happy that it even worked.

That brings us to 4 known PS3s here

I, do not, *do not*, like the virtual memory cards thing tho. If I was playing a PS2 game on my PS3 and wanted to take that game over to a friends and play on their PS2 I can no longer do that because I can't get the data off the system. This is one area where I think Sony needs to make the memory card adapter a two way street.

Motorstorm doesn't appeal to me, but I have no doubt that Gran Turismo 5 will be phenomenal when it hits the PS3.

As for the aliasing, I don't think it's so much that the PS3 is adding aliasing as it's simply the nature of putting games into 480p that weren't coded with a 480p mode. Not so much a problem as an unfortunate quirk of the upscaling.

I'm currently borrowing the Japanese import version of Motorstorm from a friend at work and it is a fantastic game. I was up until 2:30 last night playing through it. This version is very limited gameplay wise in that all you do is race after race but there are quite a few tracks and vehicles to play with. Also the demo track is the smallest track in the game thus far and the effects get knocked up a notch from the demo version. The tracks all have tons of different paths so getting to know them takes quite a while, also the different types of mud and dirt really change which type of vehicle has the advantage. The motion control also seems to have been tuned up a bit, but I still prefer using the analog sticks. Overall this is going to be a great game when it comes out here, normally I don't like arcade racers but this one is pretty great better than Burnout 3 in my opinion.

There are some weird things with Blu-Ray playback. For one the Blu-Ray seems to only be able to output in 1080i or 1080p so if you only selected 720p from the menu options it will output in 480p. Also I found this link which is some kind of translation of an interview with the audio/visual developers of the PS3 it brings up some interesting things, and it's nice to know they seem to be aware of the issues involved. Another interesting note is that they state it was much harder to implement the SACD decoder than the Blu-Ray h.264 decoding software.

One thing I interpreted from the article is that it seems you get better color depth if you select YCrCb instead of RGB. Also this quote seems to indicate they are having some problems with deinterlacing DVDs which may also explain the graphics glitches in some PS2 games...

Quote:
Currently there are complaints from users about non-existent DVD upscaling in the PS3. As for the interlace-to-progressive conversion before upscaling, the current player has it already. There was a team at the division for broadcast equipments at Sony that does research for improving image quality by using the NVIDIA shader language. They ported it onto RSX. After Cell does noise reduction and other filters, RSX does interlace-to-progressive conversion. Though the current algorithm has bugs for some video sources, SCE says the conversion precision will be upgraded by future updates. Also the noise reduction filter is currently optimized for video sources with relatively many MPEG noises recorded with a video recorder. SCE knows lack of picture details because of it and will provide new default values for noise reduction by checking recording formats and media IDs for DVD discs. As for upscaling, they are doing the research to develop a high-quality multi-tap upscaling filter that balances the load between Cell and RSX. They also plan to use the non-original luminance information generated in upscaling for HDMI 1.3 deep color.

What do you think about Gran Turismo HD?

I think it's a fun reminder of why I enjoy the series, but it was too easy to unlock all the cars. There is none of the immense frustration of taking license tests. But for $0.00 it's a good download.

That's pretty much how I feel as well. I've read posts from other people talking about how gorgeous the demo is. To be honest I don't think it looks all that amazing. Sometimes it does look incredibly good during replays, but while racing I think it pretty much looks like a true HD version of GT4. The sound isn't all that hot, either. I will say that using the triggers for gas and brake really makes the game far more enjoyable.

Still, like you said, it reminds me why I like the Gran Turismo games. Their target times are far too easy to meet but I guess that's what the scoreboard are for and I'm very glad they added that in. Hopefully games will be able to pull your friend's list from the system and use that as a filter for scoreboards and such.

Make that 5.

FF XII works on the PS3 but higher resolutions look like you're watching it through a screen door. Aliasing is very bad. (And, of course, no vibration on the controller). Any title that uses the standard PS2 joystick should work fine. There are NO PS2 controller ports so DDR and Guitar Hero is SOL.

On the plus side you can make PS2 and PS1 emulated memory cards on the PS3's harddrive. (I picked up a PS2 memory card -> USB adapter at the local Fry's which I believe will allow me to upload my old memory cards to the harddrive but I haven't actually confirmed this yet)

Ridge Racer 7 is nice and solid if unremarkable (I got it out of "tradition" as a launch title as I purchased it for the PS1 and 2)

Resistance: Fall of Man is good.

Gran Turismo HD is just fantastic looking. My buddies kept asking "This isn't pre-rendered, right? You're actually PLAYING this?!"

Ditto that the controllers are incredibly light... Extra controllers are also $50!?!?!?! and do NOT include a USB cable.

The PS3 does run warm but the fan is much quieter than my XBox360.

Blu-Ray looks nice but, I'm hard pressed to say that the picture is that much better than my up converting DVD player. For instance, I got the Fifth Element and I can identify the individual smudge lines in the taxi window that Bruce Willis drives but the difference in picture quality is small like going from Composite to S-Video whereas I was expecting going from SD to HD. Although that's certainly the case if you don't have an upconverting DVD player. (I'm running on an older 42" Panasonic Plasma through component and I've seen it on a newer 52" rear projection TV both HD).

Setup is... interesting. The unit weighs a TON (figuratively) and is not designed to be portable, near as I can tell there's only one wireless configuration allowed and once you've picked your video configurations the PS3 doesn't easily allow you to change. (EG if you set yourself up for HDMI and then take it to a friend's house who has component video... you aint gettin a picture unless you reconfigure the PS3 by holding down the power button after powering up for 5 seconds. Thank you Google...)

The Sony store/online service is nice but I found myself wanting it more integrated like the XBoxLive service. (But hey, it's FREE).

In summary. This thing's a hoss and has an awful lot of potential behind it waiting to be exploited and used for some really cool stuff. Just like their PSP. I just hope that, unlike the PSP, it actually gets used.

I was a 2 week member of the PS3 club, but I decided it just wasn't worth it, at this time. I actually nodded to the box before I took it back and said "See ya again when you're cheaper!".

The problem's not with the machine, or even the games really. When you're an avid gamer and you already have a ton of other systems and games, something really has to be truly spectacular for you to take the plunge. If you are a casual gamer who hasn't played any of the ports yet, and you don't own a lot of titles to begin with, it's not a bad machine.

Motorstorm is a lot of fun, and it's pretty much the only game I kept going back to play. It's not worth a system purchase, but it will be a solid title when it hits.

Resistance would be better if I wasn't burned out on generic FPS and WW2 FPS over the years. Unless it's up to the standard of Halo, Half Life and Gears, I just don't have the desire to play them anymore. To be fair, even Prey was a bit of a repetitive snoozer, even with it's great story and inventive mechanics. I'm sure if I spent a lot more time playing it, I might dig it a bit more. But as it stands for me now, if a game doesn't grab me within the first 30 minutes of gameplay, it's got a tough road cut out for it.

Now if an exclusive adventure/horror/RPG of excellent quality would have launched with the system.. (like the much under-appreciated Condemned - which was the highlight for me when the 360 launched)

Motorstorm demo = Meh.

Why am I the ONLY person who seems to be bothered that you have a racing game with a Motorcycle as a choice of vehicle that doesn't do a wheelie? Burger King's Pocketbike racer for the 360 even has this! (and an achievement for it to, I might add.)

Seriously though, on a not-quite-cross-country course like on motorstorm, the reason a bike would be a good choice would be a lot more mobility. Without that, you are just muscled down by the baja buggies and OMG it's a Semi on a dirt track. If you can't have that mobility, why include bikes? It's like having a submarine that can't submerge in a boat race.

Getting a PS3 before 2008 is just not worth it, in my opinion. Till at least then, I'm a Wii60 gamer.

I have no reason to doubt you, and assert I was certain Sony could not ignore this is a must have in a racing game with bikes and trucks on the same track, with any hope of getting gamer cred. So I will simply ask you how you did so, and say that on the kisk I played, the game didn't let you.

I tried to tilt the controller back toward me, down on the stick, and still couldn't get it to work.
