Sheehan disrupts Democratic lobbying reform

Cindy Sheehan, in her infinite wisdom, decided that the announcement of the Democratic Congress's first attempt to reform ANY part of the government was a good time to remind everyone that there are still troops in Iraq. Remind them right off the stage.

Quote:
Led by Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a slain soldier, the protesters chanted "De-escalate, investigate, troops home now" as Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., began outlining the Democrats' plans to ban lobbyist-funded travel and institute other ethics reforms. The press conference was held in the Cannon House Office Building in an area open to the public.

Emanuel finally gave up trying to be heard over the chants, and retreated to a caucus room where Democrats were meeting.

...

"We wanted the Democrats to know they're back in power because of the grass roots," Sheehan says.

Oh my freakin... can't you please wait until we get ONE thing done before self destructing us?

Or more like the Republican party has royally pissed off even the staunchest of conservatives the past four years.

You all pretty well know me. I am a member of a certain demographic: White, male, pro-gun, military, socially liberal, fiscally conservative, and eater of various fine red meats. These "risk factors" taken as a whole typically makes one a Republican and that is usually how I'm treated when political discussions come up. I'm not a Republican. If I'm anything, I'm an Independent. But seeing as I'm all of those things I've just mentioned; I have met and hung out with quite a few hardcore, ultra-conservative Republicans. And when they all say that not only has the Republican party royally screwed things up but that the party deserved to lose, you know things are bad.

Sheehan can run around and bleat about grass roots all she wants but her brand of crazy, non-sensical "protesting", doesn't amount to a whole hell of a lot.

Normally I'd agree with you, but at the time when the Democratic Party most needs unity, needs to show they can be strong, stand up, and lead the country, Sheehan comes out of the woodwork to not only protest, but completely destroy the first defining moment of this Congress. Even if you somehow think this doesn't directly hurt the Dems, it certainly ruined an opportunity for them to gain ground.

I think dhelor nailed it.

Paleocon would probably call you a paleoconservative. I'd call you a libertarian (small "L"). It's my hope that someday either the Libertarian Party will retreat from its wackier, impractical stances, or the Republican Party will be pushed to a more libertarian outlook. Sadly, I don't think either one is too likely.

It is funny that the Left distanced themselves so quickly from Sheehan. I am just happy to see that the Left's embracing of her in the past was nothing more than partisan politics.

I might say the same thing about someone like Pat Robertson, though. There are extremists on all sides, and politics are politics. I think you'll find that most members of both major parties are more moderate then the most vocal (or most reported) members make them seem.

By the way, did you hear Robertson recently claimed God told him a terrorist attack would kill millions in America sometime later in the year? Good spirited guy, that one

Robertson is a nut, and you would be hard-pressed to find a conservative pundit who takes him seriously. On the other hand, look at the archives of Kos, Huffington, MSNBC's Hardball, etc and all of them doted on Sheehan until she became an inconvenience to the Dems. Sheehan hasn't changed her tune, so....

I rarely wish death on anyone, but Pat Robertson is one of the few people who I really think need to enroll themselves in the Darwin Awards. Seriously, the man is a serious lunatic with delusions of grandeur, not to mention a God-complex.

There was a time when Pat Robertson was taken seriously, too. He ran for president in 1988; although he didn't make it out of the New Hampshire primary, he was able to scrounge up millions of volunteers for his campaign. And when his bid didn't succeed, he founded the Christian Coalition, which has been a driving force in American politics almost since its inception. Plus, he founded the Christian Broadcasting Network, which, from personal experience, I can say is still a pretty big force in many Evangelicals' lives. As far as my cursory research can uncover, the public didn't really start turning on him until he got vocal with his utter craziness in the late-90's.

My point: Every great nutjob was once a darling to someone or other. Sheehan, Robertson, etc.

In someways I put Sheehan in a similar crowd of personalities as a few of the journalists in the White House Press Group, they themselves have become the news and any political point they are trying to make is just collateral that is over-ridden by their own name.

Needless to say, I'm a fan of holding our governments feet to the fire at this point. I think there is a lot of optimism about and in the New Congress and maybe Sheehan & Team could've given them a chance to get rolling before making news.

Eh, I always thought of her as a nut, so I guess I never really noticed the Left embracing her. She always seemed to be more about the spotlight than any message, I'm just amazed that she got what she wanted (well, the first step of it, anyway, republicans out of power), and is only defeating her own goals by continuing to crave the spotlight. There's people like this of all political persuasions, I'm just appalled that she would actually disrupt a press conference to the point of forcing the speaker to leave, when the person speaking is the one most likely to help her.

I dunno - we should go back to '88 and look at some of the writings then. It's not exactly as if crazy religious nut types are uncommon on some shows (this was well before the insane 24 hour networks). I remember Fallwell yelling about 9/11 and gays days after the event.

I didn't see anything unique about Sheehan other then her pull as a story - as usual, I'm willing to attribute far less to partisan politics in the media then I am to revenue. Maybe I should have asked you first who you meant by the broad term "The Left?"

I know that when she first got on the scene a lot of the anti-war movement, ran to her and her story. Which, I don't blame them. If you want the war to end, you'll do anything you can.

The problem is we have a situation in Iraq so disasterous for the planet, the Iraqis and the US (not to mention the poor soldiers and their families) that I'm shocked monks aren't self-immolating at this point. What kind of reasoned debate over the "war plan" should we have at this point when this illegal and immoral action has to end today? Okay, so she's a clown. I don't think extremism or blanket assertions of that ilk make for good policy, DS. Maybe people of varying opinions would best sit down and discuss, while being open to compromise and different ideas.

I'm pretty old fashioned that way, though.
