Frustration or a Fathers Quest for a Wii
First off, pardon the semi-rant.
Saturday, December 16th
Main Place Mall in Santa Ana
So, it all began with a simple desire to see what the Wii was like. The nefarious, wonderful bastards at Nintendo decided to setup eight coveted Wii's complete with two controllers and an LCD TV for shoppers to simply check out what the Wii was like. After hogging a Wii for about 30 minutes, Mrs. CEJ whispers in my ear that Santa really should try and bring one of these to the house.
Being the futy bound father I am, plus the fact that it will let me play games like Zelda in the family room, I was all in. We hit 3 GameStops, 2 Targets, a Best Buy and CompUSA before discovering the Target in Irvine would be receiving 15 that night.

Day Two of the Wii Quest
After raining and a relative cold snap (it dipped in the 30s F), I managed to drag my sorry butt out of bed and down to the local Target with the hopes of maybe grabing a Wii ahead of everyone else. Turns out I was mistaken.
The line started at 11 PM the night before. By 4 AM, there were 23 people in line for 15 Wii's. My hope now lie with either eBay or the Amazon raffle.

Day Three of the Wii Quest
Boot up and login. I have one goal at 6 AM ... did I win the right to purchase a Wii from our good friends at Amazon.
My inital gloss isn't good. I have no e-mail confirming my selection. Switch over to another tab (God Bless Firefox) and check the Amazon web site. Son of a .... damn, no cursing this early. The kids are still asleep.
No Wii from the fickle hands of fate over at Amazon.

Day Five of the Wii Quest
35 auctions have closed on new Wii's on eBay. My name, in some form or manner, is on all of them. My common sense meter will not let me spend more than $100 (US) over the MSRP. I just cannot bring myself to dump more than that on a console.
at 5PM, ebay is kind enough to send me a summary of my bid activity. It's freakin' ugly. None of my bids were even in contention. Most auction closed around 450-480.00 US.
Toward the end of the day I find one. An employees knows a guy that knows a guy that will sell me one for $500 (US). I swallow my pride and call the wife to just confirm we want to do this. She's not so constrained by the whole pride thing. We wave off and let the guy, who knows a guy, find someone else to sell a $500 Wii to.

Day 11 of the Wii Quest
So things didn't go so bad. Turns out Santa can hand out IOU's for the things he couldn't get his hands on. Bad news is I am now in debt to my kids. For those of you who don't have kids, let me just state that once they get an idea in their head, it stays. Same with concepts. Imagine my surprise when they figured out I not only have to get them a Wii, but that per the note from Santa, I owe it to them.
The guy at GameStop in Irvine's pretty cool about the whole thing. The guy had to get pinged relentlessly by hopeful parents on the quest for a Wii since before the Christmas rush. He tells me that some are due but I need to time it so that I am in the store when the shipment arrives. If I just call, they'll be gone before I can get there. No, there was no line up out front that morning when he got in.
Same thing happens over the course of a couple more days I hear the same thing; no, there wasn't a line up, we had three this AM, you just have to have good timing.
Tuesday, January 2nd
GameStop in Santa Ana (off Segerstrom and Bristol)
Day 17 of the Wii Quest
So, by now I am resigned to this quest not necessarily being a quick hit. Joystiq has reported predictions of shortages on the Wii through March. That and the groovey new dual recharging station has me resigned to waiting it out. Still, I can't resist walking in and checking.
Now keep in mind, I know the Wii's still clear $400 US on eBay and that not all GameStops are alike, but I had good experiences with the ones in Irvine and South Coast.
So I ask; 'Got any Wii's?'
Teenager #1: Without looking at me ... 'No'.
Teenager #2: Looking at the pile of UPS boxes behind the register ... 'No, and we're not expecting any'
*cue the sly smile to his buddy*
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot ... My impression, and that of my cohort that tagged along with me were, they were lying. Sure, speculation on my part, but these guys were probably flipping 'em at the swap meet or on eBay.
Summary
After 17 Days, I'm not sure how to proceed. I'm now back at work and have other commitments than searching out a new Wii. I doubt my timing is so good that I will hit a reputable GameStop or Target employee that isn't willing to sacrifice his or her minimum wage job for a chance at selling a Wii on eBay for a weeks salary.
*sigh*

While visiting relatives in the Detroit area last week I scored a Wii at a local Target. My son got a Target gift card for Christmas so we went to the store mainly for that, but as usual I sauntered back to the electronics area and voila! they had about 8-10 systems in the display cabinet. After purchasing it my son went back to the same Target about an hour later to get Zelda (on sale) and reported that only 1-2 were left. Right place at the right time I guess.......
I, too, reckon staff in shops will hold on to them.
I've not had a go on a Wii yet. There was a demo pod at HMV in Piccadilly Circus, but we I wasn't allowed to use it. Why? Because Nintendo reps had to be there, just incase something went wrong.

Wow. That's funny. I just walked to a local store here and they sold me one. It was like december 20th, too.

Mex,
If they're available where you are, perhaps CEJ could send you the cash for one.

I'm still searching Ottawa for one. Now that Christmas is over with and Nin's school is paid for, I have enough left over to pick up a wii... If only I could find one.

It's pretty crazy. Been through the same process as you, CEJ. One day I hit three stores that "had them earlier", but my timing was poor. Gamestops are hard, because you never know when the shipment will show up. Best Buy, Target, and other big stores are tough, because they involve camping out. I've decided to start hitting the EB games by my house, because they get UPS first thing in the morning.
No luck today. As I was chatting with the manager, he fielded 15 phone calls, and at least 12 of them were asking about Wiis. He had PS3s, but neither I, nor any of the callers were interested. It's obvious that the hype is still strong. I'm on overnights this weeks, so I will plan on rolling in to the store each day after dropping my daughter off at school.
It is frustrating. We bought Twighlight Princess for my daughter as a promise to get one. Probably a mistake. I kind of wish we had just picked up the Gamecube version for now. If there was a Wii patch that would upgrade GC vewrsions to use the Wii controller I'd be on it in a second.

You know what, I'll go check if they have any and I'll get back to you, I don't think it should be a problem. I also saw the wiimotes and a couple of Nunchucks there. I haven't seen the "classic" controller anywhere, however.

Damn, any light at the end of the tunnel would be most appreciated. Hope is a fickle thing at this point in the Wii quest.

Just to clarify; I went to check it out. The wife, in a moment of gaming ignorance, suggested that Santa get one. The kids latched on to the idea and promptly started writing notes to Santa asking for a Wii. The rest is history.
Wife had no idea. I would have blissfully gone on with my PC Gaming, amused by the hype and hysteria associated with a Wii. Unfortunately, I ended up getting pulled into it.
The UPS suggestion is pretty much what I had been told. Problem is, I don't really have the time to start stalking UPS delivery people. I will stop by the local Target tomorrow to see what their ETA. The place is pretty empty during the day.

Same here.. I hit 5 targets, 3 walmarts, frys, and 4 gamestop/ebs this past weekend and came up empty handed. I have a friend that works at EB and one that works at Gamestop looking out for me.In addition to that the EB and Target by my office will be getting daily visits and I think myself and $20 will have a nice talk to the UPS guy when he stops by the office tomorrow to pick up our shipping. Im hoping to get one soon.

Hey, CEJ, if you get a lead on one, mind dropping me a note? I'm in the same general area, and I'm having NO luck. I'll return the favor should I latch onto a good vibe before you.

I got excited about the hype, and then I bought a 360.
I feel I can pretty easily wait until spring or so, when they're easier to find. I expect the allure of Smash Bros. to overwhelm my restraint.

Not a problem.
The genius behind throwing these things into a crowded mall during the Christmas shopping season was absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately, the bad taste in my mouth from the eBay scammers is pretty revolting.

Maybe. I would have bought a Wii if I could find one. I'd just gone too far into the football season without playing Madden, and I was starting to feel weird.

Bingo!
Scored a Wii today at EB Games!
Was working the overnight, and had to stay late. I got out about 10:30am. On my way home I decided to call EB instead of going there. They get their shipments early, so a quick no would let me get some sleep sooner. But then I heard the magic words, "We just got three in, right now." I begged him to hold one for me, let him know who I was, since I buy and sell there on a regular basis, and promised to be there within 20 minutes. I showed up, and there was a lady just finishing up her purchase of a Wii. Then the manager gave me that nod to let me know I was in like flint!
I'm getting it set-up now (it's on its second update, and they are pretty long) so it will be ready for my daughter when she gets hoome. I was supposed to take her and a friend ice skating this afternoon, but I think I will just tell them I am too tired (which is totally true now!) and tell them to hang out at home instead. She will be bummed, until she sees what's under the TV! Too bad there are no extra controllers to be had anywhere.I was told by a guy at best Buy that the controller were recalled, and they sent all of their controllers in. So it may be awhile before they start showing up.
I'm going to be a good dad, and not even open up Wii sports or Zelda before she gets home. I'll let her break in the game playing. I may check out the weather thing, as that sounds kind of cool..
BTW, when I was at Best Buy, they had a stack of eleven PS3s, and the guy told me they had 60. He said they couldn't give them away. EB Games had a few PS3s as well.

Recall? This is news to me. You can go to Nintendo's website and fill out a form (have to have your Wii's serial #) to have them send you up to 4 replacement straps for the Wiimotes.......
I've missed them by less than half an hour here several times in the last few days. All the Target, Toys'R'Us and Walmart guys are clued in to the UPS delivery idea and won't even speculate what time of day they get their shipments. I think they dread a horde of parents descending on them every day at 1045 or something...
It's starting to get frustrating.
"Sometimes I go around saying, 'Kommisar Paulson has seized the commanding heights of the economy!'" - Paul Krugman, asked if recent changes to banking are socialistic.
I feel everyones pain. This the first thing remotely game related that my wife is interested in and we both cann't find one anywhere.
My Zune Profile
My only hope is online. The only store within 80 miles of me that would even remotely have them is Kmart, and it took them a year to get 360's regularly in stock. I think they've had a single shipment of Wii's so far (maybe 8-10 of them). So until the big online retailers carry them with a volume that I can get online and purchase it, I'm going to continue to be out of luck.
I just bought laptops for my wife and I, so I've convinced myself that I can wait for the Wii until I can readily walk into a store, swipe a card, and take it home.
CEJ: I really enjoyed your story. I live in the same area, and I have been to every one of those locations looking for one item or another. I had a good visual sense of your quest as I read it:)
We've still be unable to get one, although I missed a unit at at a local Bust Buy by minutes (was shopping for something else). It's pretty insane - I don't think anyone really saw this coming in this magnitude. I look forward to the day I can just walk into a store and grab one at my leisure.
I'm stunned that folks are still camping all night for these things... it's become a Sunday ritual around these parts apparently, as Best Buy/Target appear to hold all week and sell on Sundays.

I was ringing around yesterday. One shop said the magic words "We got some in yesterday".
Then they said they'd run out. I've just ordered mine online instead.

I'm not going to buy one anytime soon because the local store that imports the Wii wants around 2500 NIS (close to 600$) for it. It used to be 3000 NIS (tad more than 700$).
