GameTunnel has their best of 2006 lists up:

I downloaded the Dawnspire client and checked it out. The movement is a bit funky at first but once you get the hang of it, the gameplay is pretty good. This could be fun with some other GWJ folks. I haven't been able to find any servers with more than one or two people on.

I also checked out the Master of Defense and Gumboy Crazy Adventures demos. Both are very good.

Minions of Mirth looks like it has come a long way since I checked it out early in the year. I might have to give it another play.

Anybody else try out some of these?

Sounds like this Dawnspire thing might be a Defense of the Ancients clone, or heavily influenced by it!

Hmm, I'm not sure DwarfFortress was first released in 2006.

I sometimes forget that there's so much great semi-free stuff out there - thanks jakeleg. The market for independent games is maturing nicely.
