Christmas Morning Wii Celebration (help me get set up!)
Monday, December 25th, 2006 - 3:00pm
Hey guys. What a great night yesterday. Merry Christmas and all =)
So I got meself a Wii, and I was hoping you guys could give me a list of things to do and stuff to buy, since some of you already have almost a month of experience with this thing.
I managed to plug it into the internets and it is downloading updates, but I haven't done anything else besides playing 3 minutes of tennis (INCREDIBLE!).
The only game I bought is Zelda.
So what do you recommend I do after downloading the console update?

Well, you'll need to give us your Wii Code so I can send you Jesus. Trust me, Jesus knows how to bowl.
On another note, I'm going to pick up Super CastleVania IV later on today, and maybe F-Zero or Zelda... Not exactly sure which of the two yet.

Where is the MAC addy located on these pups? I have to get my daughter's up on the 'net tonight after work.

Emm, where do I see that?
BTW, I'm registering my Wii (LOLZ) and there's like 5 Mex-es already, so if you meet one of them and he's a dick and he's not cool like me, it's not me.

If you guys have not figured this out yet....
MAC address is under the Wii configuration for Internet then console information.
Your Wii console code is in the Wii address book.

I'm still frustrated that Jesus hasn't visited me. I'd like to see how the Son of God can bowl. Especially today.

I'll spread the gospel to your Wii tonight when I get a moment.
And with that sentence, the Internets have called it a night: goodnight everybody!

Ok, I'm on EBGames and I'm choosing stuff to buy.
What do you think I should remove/add?
I have selected:
* Wii Steering Wheel (maybe for later driving games)
* Wii Controller Glove (like a condom for my wii stick, I wanna try one and see if it's cool)
* Splinter cell
* Rayman: Raving Rabbids
* Need for Speed: Carbon
* GT Pro Series with Wheel
* Metal Slug Anthology
* Call of Duty 3
* Far Cry: Vengance
* Trauma Center: Second Opinion
* Madden NFL 07
* Super Swing Golf
* Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam
* Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Limited Edition Official Strategy Guide
Am I missing anything good?

Wow! Are you missing anything at all?
Ummm, maybe Excite Truck? Might put that wheel to good use. But, I really don't know how good it is.

Wow, that's quite the list! I got a Wii game for Xmas, but no Wii yet. Raving Rabbits!

That's an extensive list! I think you might be able to pare it back considerably.
In terms of the accessories, I've heard the Wii Steering Wheel is decent, but ultimately, it's just some plastic you put around the remote. Not really necessary. I haven't heard anything either way about the Wiimote condoms, but I have a hunch that they're pretty superfluous.
As for the games, if you're looking for a racing game, you should forget about the GT Pro series (apparently, it's a 3-year-old GameCube game that was dodgy at the time of release, with zero improvements) and Carbon (just not a great fit with the Wii--framerate and control issues aplenty). Not sure about Downhill Jam, but as far as I'm concerned, there's only one race game worth your sheckles just yet: Excite Truck. The game seems to divide people, but I am one of its apostles, preaching the gospel of its greatness. I've played it more than any other Wii game, embarassingly. It's just a silly arcade-style race game that can be incredibly immersive. One tip: load up your SD card with good music, and go with a custom soundtrack. The in-game music might actually be a crime against humanity, but playing the game to the Ramones, the Stones, and the Clash is just ridiculously fun.
For shooters, apparently only Call of Duty is worth your while, and that might not be the case if you've played it for the 360. Skip Far Cry and Splinter Cell (I know it's not a shooter, but it involves guys with guns and the Wii version has been widely panned, so I thought I'd dispatch it quickly). As for the Metal Slug game, it might be worth browsing the Virtual Console before you pick it up -- Gunstar Heroes might scratch the itch, and it's a lot cheaper.
I'd also recommend spending some time with the golf in Wii sports before getting the Super Swing title. It might hold you over for green time until a more widely praised game is released. Madden, though, seems like a no-brainer for fans of that series.
As for Rayman, I like the game, because it provides a comprehensive overview of what the Wiimote can do, but it won't win any prizes or game design. The narrative is almost non-existent, the framing animations are shoddy and repetitive, and the graphics look sub-par for the GameCube. But it's got a lot of fun mini-games: I like the on-rails shooter segments, and adore the rhythm games, which give you a hint of how Wii could take Guitar Hero to the next level. Not all the games are winners, but there are so many that it's worth checking out if you're up for a silly, Wario Ware style experience and can't wait until that game releases in mid-January.
Finally... one title that's not on your list that might be worth checking out is Elebits. It's got first-person shooter elements, mixed with a bit of Katamari Damacy. Plus, it's got multiplayer, and you can share levels you design with people in your address book. Like Rayman and Excite Truck, it demonstrates that the games designed specifically for the Wii stand far above the rest. It's not a system that benefits from ports.
Hope that helps...
Wow, that was awesome Zyblorg, thanks! You saved me some bucks.
I saw Elebits, but it looks pretty childish, and since I don't know anything about it... Oh, what the hell, I'll buy it and if I don't like it I'll send my ninjas to punish you.
Too bad about the racing, I want more games that really show off the wiimote! After playing Box all day yesterday, I'm actually sore in my right lat (and I have a strong back).

Not really worth it. If you have a decent PC or a 360, grab that version. If you want to play the 'most complete' version, get the Xbox one.
Already mentioned in some other threads - certainly a good purchase for the Wii.
You might want to go for the PC or 360 version.
The game is part of Ubi's Quick Wii Cash-in line-up along with Red Steel and Far Cry. Avoid it. As for the wheel - seems fun at first, but, ultimately, most people seem to end up using the standard controls where you hold the remote NES-style and use the D-pad to steer. Excite Truck apparently did a better job about the tilt control approach.
Can't comment on that since CoD/MoH always bored the hell out of me.
UGH.
Haven't played it yet since it's not available over here yet - but seems to be as good as its DS brother from what I've heard so far.
Also check out the threads on Rayman RR and Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz for impressions on the latter game. It's definitely not a must-purchase - but if the MP part isn't the only aspect you want to touch, you might ponder getting this one as well. Maybe second-hand. You certainly should look out for alternative cables to hook up the system to your TV. If you can use component cables, get them. You will see the difference. Also, component is the only way to use 480p.
As for the Wii code - get all the Goodjer code information right here.
I'd pick up Trauma Center. It's one of two Wii games that I've actually bought at retail. The rest were either free (Wiiii Sports), or VC.
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...
Damn, I thought there'd be a lot more games at launch. Good games, I mean.
Anyway, I reduced the list to just Call of Duty, Trauma Center, Rayman, and NFL. Still pondering Elebits.

Just curious, does EBGames send you this stuff to Mexico?
I got Zelda and Dragon Ball BT 2 with my Wii, if you liked the DB series then it's a fine game I think.
I've also been getting a lot of Gamecube games to play on the Wii, but well, I never had a GC so I'm catching up on those, which might not be your situation.

I picked up Elebits yesterday and so far I'm really liking it. The story part of the story mode is a bit... janky and kiddie but the gameplay itself is fairly fun.
Rayman I'd rented before and really loved, despite its flaws. So much so I picked it up yesterday as well.
Super Monkey Ball I picked up at launch and sadly have played maybe 3 or 4 times since. It just hasn't grabbed me.
Red Steel I rented and completely hated. The graphics, to me, are worse than a 1st gen game cube title, the story is bland, and the voice acting is worse than an Ed Wood movie.

Also Pick up monkey ball like I said. Red Steel wasn't finished before release. And thats about it.

I picked up Trauma Center and I'm liking it so far, although there isn't a lot of new content for people who've played the DS version already.
I got Red Steel as a gift, which means I didn't spend any money on it, which makes it a lot easier to stomach. The shooting parts are subpar, the sword-fighting parts are actually somewhat neat. It doesn't make you feel like you're holding a sword, persay, but it does make you feel like you're in a sword fight.
I am eagerly eyeing Elebits and DragonBall.
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
Sure, they love me. I've been a client since last century, I think.

Well, while my games arrive, I couldn't resist and I got Red Steel.
It pretty much sucks.
I mean, I can see the potential, but we tried multiplayer, and the graphics f*ckING SUCK. This is barely Gamecube quality.
The controls are kinda weird at first, feels strange, definitely not pinpoint accuracy like with a mouse, but more flexible than a controller in Halo.
I haven't tried single player, but if you want this for a party game, rent it first. =)
