Fat Free Ranch!? (or, Low-Fat Foods and their Not Tasting Good.)
I am a large man who should probably be losing weight.
I love Ranch Dressing.
...
These two facts do NOT get along together.
I have tried quite a few Fat Free Ranch dressings in my day, and they all seem to taste less like Ranch and more like Liquid Punch-In-The-Face. Honestly, how the National Ranch Council looks the other way and gives these dressings the Ranch Accreditation they need to carry the name is beyond me.
Does anyone share my lust for Ranch, and my desire to not have Coronary Bypass surgery at 30? What is your fat-free or low-fat dressing of choice?
Also accepted would be any easy-to-produce, low-fat food that actually tastes good. "Eat an apple" is not a good example. "Kraft Fat-Free " is more along the lines of the helpful, non-sarcastic comment I'm looking for.
Begin sarcasm now.

There are good dressings out there (vinegarettes, etc.) that are lighter. They usually are higher in salt. So for salads or dressings you tend to just have to go lighter.
As someone who lost 170lbs.+ and started at over 400lbs. I can tell you that you will have to eat a few apples if you're serious. However, you can do a lot just by exercising a ton, cutting out simple carbs in favor of complex carbs like sprouted wheat and cracked wheat, and overall just eating better. I dramatically increased my exercise when I lost the weight, but I didn't dramatically alter my diet. I cut down on the dressings, alcohol, things that were superfulous. I ate lots of salad sandwiches made with Spectrum mayonaise (a canola-based spread). And I just generally started haunting the health food aisles of my grocery store.
It worked and I know it can work. That may seem like a lot to take on, but I still eat chocolate. I still snack. You just pick and choose your battles. I let myself snack, but I try to be judicious about the dressing. I get to have white bread sometimes, as long as I'm using that spray butter on it. There's lots of ways to have good taste and lose calories and thus lbs.
Dressings specifically? Check the Newman's stuff. The honey-mustard is to die for, IMHO. And I really was hooked on the fat free Kraft Zesty Italian for a while. That and eating gardenburgers with ketchup made me not miss ranch very much.

Quit eating salads. Boom, problem solved (somebody had to do it).
On the weight loss side, boost your metabolism through exercise and you'll be able to eat more of want you want while still losing the fat.

Indeed. That was why that was a hard question for me to answer. I just exercised a lot, gained a lot of muscle, ate better and it fell off. Now I'm struggling with the last 30, but that's a different story.

I've been in a constant battle to bring my 190 down to 175 forever. I lost the 15 that got me down to 190 a long time ago, and recently just resolved to get back down under 180. For me what works and what worked before is a combination of weight watchers and as hardcore a weightlifting program as I can take. I think the hidden valley FF is as good as it gets, which isn't good, I tend to preer Caines FF Ceaser, which is really very good.

For what it's worth, keep an eye on your servings of Fat Free dressings. When they remove fat, they add other things to try and replace flavor. The usual replacement is simple sugar, which can be just as bad for you when you're trying to lose weight.
Best practice is to moderate your intake and excercise. Like DS said, a lot of good comes from regular excercise!

Fat-free salad dressings are not actually that wonderful. Many of the ingredients in common salads are already fat-free, but without at least a little fat present, certain nutrients in those raw vegetables, like lycopene and beta-carotene, are actually impossible for our bodies to absorb. With a fat-free dressing (and no fatty salad ingredients like cheese, avocados or nuts), you're essentially just eating salad for the taste and not the nutrition - and who wants to do that?
The best way to do this is to stick to a low-fat or full-fat dressing (or by adding salad ingredients with good kinds of fats: olives, nuts, avocados, and some cheeses). Olive oil based dressings are full of heart healthy fats, and are also good for your skin and hair. But if you really want ranch styles, stick to the versions with the least amount of ingredients on the label, or the most amount of ingredients on the label that you recognize as actual food. Newman's Own makes excellent dressings, and I heartily recommend their low-fat ranch.
Another tip: whatever dressing you choose, put it on the side of your salad, not on top. Then dip your fork into it as you eat, and then into the salad. That gives you the flavor of the dressing, but you're not eating as much of it (since full-fat dressings can sometimes be hundreds and hundreds of empty calories). Plus, it doesn't wilt your salad, which is why I do it. Nothing worse than soggy lettuce. Ew.

Also:
If you want to eat healthfully, I suspect you may need to retrain your pallette a little bit. Fresh fruits, vegetables and meats are supposed to taste good. Man was not meant to eat boxed brandname, chemically-altered food products. The less you eat of pre-processed foods, the less sodium, trans-fat, sugar and empty carbohydrates you'll bring into your body, and you'll start to feel better and look better. That's not to say you have to go on a raw diet, but eating as much fresh food as you can in whichever way you like it best prepared is going to be infinitely better for you than any Low-Fat Boxed Food Product we could recommend.
You may not like the taste of apples, okay. But there must be some fresh fruits you like. Eat those instead. It's not a sarcastic comment. It's the truth. You will look and feel better with the more "real" foods you eat.

Man was also not made to eat things like vegetables when meat was available. Now get out there and hunt yourself an elf. Ohh no no no, that gun stays HERE buddy, get your pocket knife.

All I have to say is Exercise, Exercise and Exercise some more. Eat a lot of tuna, chicken breast and turkey along with fresh fruit and vegetables. And don't forget the whole wheat bread and pastas.

If Warlock's anything like me, the ranch dressing is for just about everything *but* salads. Well, salads too. Pizza crust, sandwich spread, on cereal, over ice cream... ok, I made those last two up. But the diversity of ranch's deliciousness is what makes it dangerous. Do not bother trying to use fat-free varieties; as others have said they often jack up the sugar content in "fat free" foods in a lame attempt to recoup flavor. Instead, just be honest with yourself and have the full-fat version. Fat is good, fat fills you up and curbs your appetite. Now, if it's healthy fats like those found in olive oil and nuts, all the better. I'm no poster-boy for physical prowess (see: me bursting out of coconut bra) but I'm relatively healthy because I just try to limit my portions and eat healthy when given the choice. Have an orange with your lunch instead a bag of doritos. Have a banana for breakfast instead of a sausage mcmuffin with ranch.

MMMMMM .... elf. I love me some dark elf on a pita with onion, lettuce and mayo.
When's lunch?
Good luck with the weight loss, Warlock. Everyone seems to be giving good advice, so I'll just give you encouragement.
Lose weight = eat healthier + exercise
It's really that simple.
Oh, and pick up smoking! Really kills that appetite

Oh ya, I would recommend finding healthy snacks as well. Instead of a Snickers, eat a handful of Cheerios, etc...

Make sure to pan fry the Cheerios in a half stick of butter, and sprinkle liberally with garlic salt before consuming!

I'm an ice-cream phanatic and it's something I'll never be able to give up. Can anyone recommend my a good brand of fat-free or really low fat ice cream that is decent and reasonable low in cost? (probably better off trying to find a three-legged unicorn)

Why not try a brand of frozen yogurt or sorbet? Fat-free ice cream is a crime against humanity. Plus, if you factor in all the additives and preservatives, it's even worse for you than the regular kind. Better to just eat less of the full-fat stuff, or switch to a frozen yogurt/sorbet, than to eat crappy ice cream.

Night elves are surprisingly low in fat. Also, the ears are good for making soup.
Also, there's a National Ranch Council? Knowing this makes me want to cry.

Indeed. I wasn't as clear, probably, but that was one of the #1 changes I made. Cutting back on simple carbs as much as possible. That means minimizing all the dressings that contain copious amounts of corn syrup, high fructose or otherwise.

Yum. Sorbet and frozen yogurt are good. Still have to watch that sugar. Like someone else said, inevitably it comes down to diet and exericse. i.e. More apples, less sugar. More exercise, less couch gaming. It's the unfortunate reality of losing weight. You have to actually change your lifestyle some.

DGSgamer - I checked out the weight loss pics that you had posted for us a few weeks back and the changes were very impressive (this would be a good thread to post them again for anyone who hasn't seen). Definitely motivation for my finance and to shed the 20-30 pounds that we each want to get rid of.

I'm at about 230. I need to try to get down to 180. Exercise is the tough part with the arthritis, so I gotta work on that.
But the eating part, well, that's more iffy. I've maintained for a while now; haven't gained much weight in the past two years fortunately except for a bit last winter (about ten pounds).
DS, what bread do you recommend? That's probably the worst part for me, since I love me some sammiches.
Fortunately when I do salad, I prefer Italian dressings over ranch, which is a bit better. I actually have to worry more about my sodium intake than anything else though, with the history of heart disease / blood pressure on my dad's side of the family.
I need to figure out what exercise I can do that isn't high-impact but is at least fun enough (or something like that) and doable indoors (long winters in Iowa) for me to stick with.
Oh yeah, I avoid HFCS like the Plague. It's the cheapest sweetener available and is in almost all of your favorite sweet foods. I have zero evidence, but I blame our "Obesity Epidemic" directly on HFCS.

I'm not DS, but I have been partial to the Nature's Own line of products. The 100% Whole Wheat, and Double Fiber (5g of fiber per SLICE) are actually pretty good. The Double Fiber sounds like it'd be sand paper, but it's really really soft.

Thanks for the recommendation Tyrian.
I'm happy to try a few varieties, find something I really dig.
Sure thing! You might also take a look at the Sara Lee line. They also have a 100% whole wheat product that is pretty good. My wife eats that because it is dairy free (you wouldn't believe how many breads use whey or casein in their recipes).
Be warned, a lot of commercial breads use HFCS!

I eat a couple different kinds of bread. I always look for sprouted wheat bread and cracked wheat when that's not available. It's much less processed. The companies I buy are NatureBake (a Portland company) and Nature's Path. The latter isn't great for sandwhiches. But often what I'll do is just eat 2 or 3 turkey slices by hand and then eat the bread by itself. The bread is almost like cake, it's so good, yet the ingredients are like follows.
"Sprouted Organic Whole Wheat Kernels, Filtered Water, Organic Dates (may contain pits), Organic Cinnamon and Organic Oatmeal"
Doesn't get much more simple than that.
