Good gaming podcasts
Monday, December 11th, 2006 - 1:52am
I was litening to the GWJ podcast and Certis was mentioning that the CGW podcst (I think it's that one) isn't that good. Right now I only listen to the 1up podcast and GWJ podcast. Are there any other ones out there? I'd like to have 5 (so three more) so I can listen to one every day while I'm at the gym.
Thanks

The one I mentioned (complained about) on the show was PC Gamer Podcast. CGW (now Games For Windows) is hosted by Jeff Green and typically pretty good. They don't always have a lot to say about PC games, oddly enough, but they get the job done.

I worry about Ryan Scott sometimes... He's bound to snap sooner or later.

I eagerly anticipate the Next-Gen.biz podcast. It's like Nightline for gamers, but a bit hit or miss.
Also, CGW is now the GFW podcast. Good to know if you ever want to find it.
For all you XBOX whores, the OXM podcast is good times, but a bit one sided like the PCGamer podcast.
Also, the rants on Rocky's Geek's Eye View are exceptional. Remember to "always be vigilent" about the coming Bearpocalypse. Not all gaming, but a healthy dose now and then.
Most uncomfortable gaming podcast? The Retronauts. I imagine a bong sesh just ended each time they hit the airwaves.

Next-Gen.biz is good. Also there's some Gamasutra ones that are entertaining. I heard the KOTOR (Yes the designer actually says it Cohtohr) conference and it was interesting.

I found a whole lot of tech/gaming podcasts are done by immature college students, and are as much about getting drunk (usually while on the air) as about gaming. I'm looking at you, Diggnation.
Major Nelson's podcast is really good if you like XBox.

90% of everything is crap, man. But the 10% that's good usually justifies the rest.

The Best Damn Podcast Ever has grown on me. Once you get past the ... unique laughter of Blake Buck, the show is quite entertaining and funny.

PC Gamer has its moments, except when Dan Morris is ranting about Jack Thompson and whenever Greg Vederman is hosting. The Vede sounds too much like Danny Bonaduce to me. So, basically 80-90% of the shows suck.
It does kill time on the bus.
I'll give props to Jeremy, the producer. Both PCG and OXM always sound really clean, and the file size is really small for 45+ minute shows.

Thankfully, Dan has moved on to greener pastures and stopped ranting. I'm trying to imagine theVede with a fifth of Turkey and a heroin needle sticking out of his neck.
He'd still be playing Diablo.

Heads up all, The Next-Gen.Biz podcast, featuring your friend and mine Gary "Gaz" Whitta and Chicago's own Jeremy Williams is changing.

They are recording live w/out any editing so expect some gafs, and their first guest is Phil Harrison.

1up, of course. EGM and GFW is occasionally good.

That's true, though, I really like the GFW podcast though, I am also a fan of the 1up podcast,
I use to really like the Gaming Steve podcast but I found it's not near as good as it use to be.

The playerone podcast http://playerone.libsyn.com/ is the only one I like and don't see here. Greg Sewart and Chris Johnston can be funny as hell sometimes. Three of the four guys are ex-game magazine editors so they can get away with talking about insider stuff and not get fired for it.
Thanks Scrobner for calling out The Best Damn Podcast Ever. I'll have to try it out this week.

I was about to suggest that as well, along with Scott Johnson's other podcast, Infendo Radio (dedicated to Nintendo stuffs). They're also planning a podcast which is dedicated to gaming whatnots and whosimawhatsits, so stay tuned to their site for newses.
At the moment, the only podcasts I listen to are the two I've mentioned, as well as the GWJ Conference Call and Weezy and the Swish, which has pretty much nothing to do with gaming - though they do mention the occasional game, and they had Adam Sessler on a while back - one of the most entertaining episodes, I feel, right up there with their episodes guest starring Gary Owens and Joe Cipriano (both big time voice over dudes, which is the main reason I listen to WatS).

I remain a gaming podcast whore. My current top five would be:
1) 1UP Yours - They often have some great inside info and Luke has really come into his own now that he's calmed down. Same with Shane, really. Too bad Garnett Lee often goes for what he must think are hard-hitting questions, but tends to come off as poorly informed and a bit of a bully. The guys keep having to talk him down, lately.
2) GFW Radio - Always fun, I love Heroes of the Web and Mr. Jeff Green.
3) Team Freemont Live - These guys cover the full spectrum of gaming news, impressions and more. Great chemistry, good production and just a lot of fun to listen to. Sometime they go off the deep end, but even that tends to be pretty amusing. The couch bandits are kind of filler though, but that could be my general lack of Shmupreciation.
4) Insomniac Games' Full Moon Show - The makers of Resistance and the Ratchet games now have a podcast. It's very open and entertaining, they also have some great surprise guests. The latest was David Jaffey, and he was good, as usual.
5) GDC Radio - Tom Kim does a great job with a deep, clean look at a ton of aspects of the game industry. His access to GDC conference feeds also serves him very well.
Certis beat me to it. - Elysium
GWJ is the only podcast I listen to, but I know Ryan Scott through Guild Wars. He put a lot of blood and sweat into trying to improve the PvP side of the game, and gets nothing but respect from me for that. Trying to improve PvP was like pulling teeth, and he did a good job in what looked like a tough situation. He was one of the most active and accessible QA people working on Guild Wars, and I don't doubt he helped the campaign portion as well. I may have to give those 1up podcasts a listen to hear what he's like over there.
MrDeVil909: I feel it necessary to point out that there are drug resistant strains of most STDs. Especially in developing nations.
Funkenpants: Great. Yet another area in which we're losing our lead to foreigners.
Just a note - Gaming Steve appears to have returned from his hiatus.

I listen to the Cheap Ass Gamer podcast. The hosts, CheapyD and Wombat remind me much of the way I discuss things with my friends so I find it interesting.
I did listen to Major Nelson's Podcast but eventually it all began sounding like marketing shill wrapped up into a semi-official and very fake podcast.

Hello all. Caught the link from here in our site referrals and just thought I'd post to say two things:
i) Thanks for listening, obviously, and,
ii) One Life Left isn't actually a podcast. Well, it sort of it, in that we MP3 it up and distribute it on the internet through iTunes, etc, but it's actually an OMG Real Life Radio Show that goes out weekly on London's Resonance 104.4FM. So that accounts for some things -- notably the accessibility, because we have an awful lot of listeners who aren't gamers.
Also, we're much better now than we were a year (or even three months) ago. That's a bonus point and a bit apologetic / self-aggrandizing so I'm not giving it a iii).
Anyway. Thanks. If you have questions or comments I'll check back here occasionally, etc, or there's a contact form on the site.

Hi Ste, and welcome
Certainly an interesting show. I've been listening to it on and off for the past several months. I hope Resonance's financial problems will be remedied soon - they might have been, haven't listened to the past two shows yet (already burned on CDs and waiting in the car, though).
It's refreshing to see such a variety of segments, though I must honestly say that some regularly get the fast-forward treatment. In any case, keep up the good work, it's certainly a unique thing you've got going on there.

I couldn't agree more about Garnett Lee. It is so odd, because once upon a time he sort of seemed like the voice of reason. Now I realize it was because he used to focus on hosting the show and keeping things moving along rather than trying to seriously participate in discussions. If you ask me he should have stuck with that, because he was good at it and it allowed him to bring something to the show that the other three (who are better informed and more clever than he is) don't. By trying to play at the things Luke, Shane, and John are good at, though, he has honestly just started sounding like a bit of a troll (particularly during their Shadowrun interview).
No need to be apologetic, Ste -- your show has been brilliant from the beginning. Sure, there was a bit of time when you didn't have your regular features, but I thought that you, Robert, and Ann did a wonderful job of keeping the show interesting even in their absence.
The only thing I would suggest is to make Ann Fiction a more regular feature. There is absolutely nothing funnier than a lady with a sexy British accent doing a dramatic reading of the dregs of internet fan fiction.

Hi Ste, pleasure to hear from you. I've been listening to your show nearly from the start, it was actually around the time when Ann was co-hosting. Hot. Anyways, I was waffling on where to include you on the list, but GDC's more informational podcast won out by a hair thanks to their latest GDC coverage. I catch you guys each week and I love your more light hearted approach to everything. The features are flat out awesome, I'm always both amused and jealous. The Gamers With Jobs Conference Call would kill for someone like Raina sending in audio letters.

I suppose one of us could fake a female voice or something...
"Hello, this is Fedda. I'm just writing/calling/whatever you'd call it to say that Gaald is CLEARLY not the cutest person on the conference call, because that Certis is totally dreamy! Then again, from what I've read, it sounds like Rabbit might be the most buff...oh my! Have to go!"
