First off let me say that I am a huge Firefly fan and that I would love nothing more than to see the show come back or another film. However, this does not hold alot of promise for me. Most MMORPG's are not exactly known for being solid, out of the box playable games. Many are plagued with numerous bugs at launch that turn more players away than the concepts of the game will attract. They have yet to even announce a development team for this, and whatever team it is will have to use a set of development tools that is still in beta testing. Also, alot of what made Firefly such a hit was the writing, atmosphere, tones, and the actors themselves. I highly doubt that any game (unless Joss Whedon is writing it) will be able to capture the essence of what was Firefly
While the idea of creating a persistent character in the Firefly universe holds immense appeal for me, I would rather see them take this development money and put it towards another movie or re-vitalizing the series. This idea strikes me as more of a company trying to use an intellectual property beloved by many as a way to generate sales.

A game based on a series and a movie that wasn't received overly well in terms of ratings and box office income? Targeted at a market that is one tough nut to be cracked?
I see no way this can end well. An honest-to-goodness single player story-driven game involving the characters from the series? Perhaps that could work. An MMORPG? Dumb.
Worst. MMORPG idea. Ever.
Unhand my beloved Firefly, MMO codemonkeys! Damn you once again, Fox.
Rant over.

I think this could be a really cool thing as there is a ton you could do for an MMO with that universe. But I highly doubt this team will do it well. But if a trial/beta is available, I'll definitely jump in because if they can pull this off, I'll be all over it. Anything that keeps Firefly going can't be all bad.

I'm fine with this, because it will almost certainly get the half-assed clone treatment. It COULD be good, but I doubt it will be.
Whatever. I don't think a bad use of a license invalidates the good stuff that came before. They can't make the series or Serenity less awesome than it was.
"PEACE ON EARTH. GOOD WILL TO MEN. PUBLIC SHELTER. ADMISSION 50¢"
The thing about Firefly is that it's not the "Universe" that sold it.. it was the characters and the ship. A single player game where perhaps you're a passenger hitching a ride on the ship and get mixed in their adventures.. maybe, if it's done right. But just being some schmo in their Universe, I don't particularly see the draw there.
Mr T broke the speed of light in the A-Team van because he wanted to prove that quantum physics was a bunch of Jibba Jabba.
I would have been happy with an Elite style game in the Firefly universe. Since I'm not going to start paying a monthly flat fee for a single game, I will assume that this is one I'll take a pass on (unless they actually come up with some unique ideas on how to handle MMORPG payments).
Exactly. The series was above all character/dialog-driven. A MMORPG makes no sense. A single player RPG with a good story that Joss had some involvement with has potential, though.
Firefly MMO has "Bad Idea" written all over it.

In general, I weep to see beloved franchises dragged out. But it's possible to make really good games out of licensed material. Hate SWG all you want, it's not that bad a game. At least it wasn't in the beginning. Same with DDO. May not be your or my cup of tea, but it's solid.
The Serenity RPG, which I have not played but read, is extremely well done. It really captures the setting and the flow, and lets face it, the crew of Serenity is a nearly stereotypical role playing party. When I was the only one I knew locally watching Firefly, I sold to my friends as "imagine Traveller, but without the math, and cuter babes." It's never been a Western to me. It's always been an RPG.
Sure, there a million things they could do wrong. There's room in the gaming industry for winners and losers without killing the underlying propoerty. Heck, they made "Star Wars Monopoly." But they also made "Queens Gambit." They made (insert random crap Star Wars Episode 2 video game) but they also made Lego Star Wars.
Just start making decaf in all the machines. Do that for 2 to 3 weeks, until everyone's kicked the habit. Then pour in the double espresso and watch the fun. - on how to deal with coworkers who don't refill the coffee pot
I would rank it Zoe, then Inara, and finally Kaylee. I wouldn't kick any of them out of bed mind you! Still out of all the women on the show I liked the red head Saffron the best, the one Mal married. I thought she was hot!
I couldn't get the multiverse site to load, but I think I've seen it before and wasn't impressed with what they showed graphic wise. I do not have high hopes, but if they do firefly justice and make a more charactercentric mmo I might be interested.
Yeah ... an MMO is a strange choice just because the foundation of the show was in characters, humor and snappy dialog--all of which are (at best) awkwardly delivered in a MMO environment. Still, it will be interesting. Firefly fans tend to be an older, more mature set in general.
It doesn't have to terrible. Thinking of something along the lines of EVE. I'd love to see a MMO game where you control the entire crew. Your character is the ship. A party-based online game like that might be really interesting.
Sorry, but the first reaction was the correct one here. This is going to crash and burn. You can not keep the idiots out of a MMO. Any kind of unique property of the IP - the atmosphere, the dialogue, the cultural subtleties - is going to be ripped to shreds by the irresistible force of nature that's the thirteen years old numbnut.
Even assuming that the game mechanics break the mold and do away with the nonsensical hunter-gatherer quests, this will never be a Firefly game. At the very best, it'll be a solid game full of browncoated jerks. The result: A general exodus of the fans that were supposed to be the core market, shortly followed by the implosion of the in-game economy, and the servers.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
