Chicagoland Slap & Tickle... February 17, 8 p.m.
Wednesday, December 6th, 2006 - 12:10pm
Well, I'm new to the area much like I'm pretty new to GWJ. I'm starting to get to know a few of the Chicagoland goodjers, but I would like to get to meet you guys for real. I don't know too many people in the area, and it would be great to get to hang out with some of you.
So, I thought I would put this up as a way to try and get some ideas for a get together. Obviously with the holidays coming up, it is going to be a busy time for everyone, so we can decide when would be a good time for people too.
I just thought this would be a great way to get the discussion started.

Are slaps guaranteed for attending?

Yes, but I'm not ticklish. And I bruise like a peach. I move for a nice little bar I know in Naperville. No smoking, great food, cheap ass beer (PBR). And I know the owner.

Well, that would work for me since I live in Aurora.
I wonder what some who actually live in Chicago would say. Nomad where are you?
I know there has to be some more Chicagoland Goodjers then the three of us.

I'm in the city, in that scary area known as Wrigleyville! Every summer hordes of Cub fans descend on my neighborhood and steal all the parking spots!

Alexander is in Chicago but he doesn't that often.

That does have to suck to loose your parking all the time.
Wanderer, what's the name of the place in Naperville?

Red Door Tavern, across from Jimmy's Grill, kinda the hub of activity there at Chicago and Washington streets.

I'm in the West Loop. I vote everyone comes to a place I can walk to.

I grew up in the city. You learn to adapt. And by adapt I mean getting a place with a driveway like I have now.
I'm up for getting together pretty much anywhere as long as it's after the craziness of the holidays.

I second the "after the holidays" sentiment.

I hear what our city-livin brethren are sayin'. With the large spread of Chicagoland we should find out where everyone is coming from and triangulate some middle ground. I'm far north in Arlington Heights.

Arlington's not *that* far north, Wanderer. I'm from Palatine, and my folks now live between Barrington and Crystal Lake.
I'm going to guess that Sir Rockford used to live even farther north than that.
What kind of place are we looking to go to?

Like I said earlier, I'm in Aurora, and I would think we could go someplace where we can get a meal and a drink and have a conversation.
Also, spouses, girlfriends someone who can listen to grown men who play video games have a conversation is invited.
Wordsmythe, I used to live in the Indianapolis area, so further south actually.
I also agree with after the holiday craziness.

Ah, see, when I see "Rockford" I think of Rockford, IL.
Ah, Indy. I'll think of something positive to say about it eventually. (It smells better than the pig farms you pass on the way down to it? I harbor no resentment against my ex-girlfriend from there?)

Ah.

Oddly enough Rockford just happens to be my first name.
Actually once you get outside of the Chicagoland area Illinois and Indiana are pretty much interchangeable, aside from the Indianapolis area.
And to be fair, the pig farms smell better then Gary, IN.

No argument there.

None of us work in Ogilvie, do we?
Got some CS_Office stuff going down. I think it's ending though.

For some reason there are words I recognize here, but I don't understand the meaning.
I'm guessing that Ogilvie is a place but I don't know where it is, and I have no idea what CS_Office stuff means.
I guess I'm just dim.

Haha, cs_office was the office map on Counter-Strike. Ogilvie Transportation Center is the Metra station for the northwest (some west and north) trains. Some people just call it the "Northwestern Station."
There was some guy who ran into the building, went up to the 38th floor (the Citigroup Building sits on top of Ogilvie), and shot a few people. Apparently the intended victim was a lawyer.
Let the jokes commence... I guess.

Yeah, I heard about that. Didn't get the CS reference.
A woman I work with's son works for Orbitz, whose offices are in that building. They were all okay though.

I live in Naperville. Some place off of major highways would probably be good. I-88 and I-355? Pehaps somewhere near the Yorktown mall? There's a ton of restaurants and malls around that area. Maybe the Portillos? You can drink there.

Hey, I love Portillo's, how can you be from the Chicagoland area and not? Mmmm... Maxwell Street Polish. I would think we would need a place to go afterwards that would be good for hanging out and chatting afterwards, or someplace that we can just stay at the whole time? Any Irish Pubs in the area? They are always good for a pint, some food, and a fair amount of BSing.
I also liked Wanderer's idea of Red Door Tavern, but Naperville may be a bit far for our city dwelling brethren, unless they wanted to catch the train to Naperville.
Regardless of where we go, who volunteers to get there early and hold up the "Goodjers" sign?

How has nobody suggested Dave and Busters or Gameworks yet?
Yeah, Gameworks is kinda old and busted now, but if you're talking bebidas con juegos, D&B in Addison or in the city proper would be the way to go.
Also, hi. I'm in Oak Park.

Yeah, you are right, I can't believe that we haven't mentioned D&B's. I've never actually been there before. I used to live in Indianapolis and they had a place called Gillian's which is the same idea, I think.
So far all good ideas. I'm up for whenever, after New Years.

There's an Irish pub I know on Ogden, just a mile or two from the I-88 I-355 intersection that I used to frequent, near Ogden and Finley. I want to say Sullivan's? I'm driving past it today. I'll get the adress.

All I've got to say is that I have seen some heavy drinking and gaming at both D&Bs and Gameworks. If Gameworks is still doing their ladies nights, those were pretty fun. If you're willing to do the party game thing and can load the slots with you and your friends you can generally get somebody drinking and everybody gaming all night for free from prizes.

I could suggest places, but I don't tend to go to game-y bars. Actually, I tend to just go to local pubs and sports bars. It's been a long while since I've considered parking and bars at the same time. (Hooray for the CTA!) That said, if folks want to come into town, I can pick from about half a million places, depending on preferences.
Otherwise... Durty Nellie's in Palatine? It's next to the tracks, at least.

You know, having people take a train to Naperville might not be a bad idea so they don't have to drive home. The nice thing about Naperville is that the train station is within 2-3 blocks of the downtown. Quiggly's is a nice irish pub in Naperville, just east of Washington.
