James Kim is a former colleague of mine and apparently he and his family have been missing for over a week in some god-forsaken part of Oregon.

The Cnet story has links and phone numbers. If you're in the area and have seen them please pass along what you know.

But seriously, the god-forsaken bit refers to the inhospitable nature of the terrain, from what I understand from the written descriptions. It's apparently one of the last places you want to get stranded, if indeed that's what's happened to James and his family.

I'm sorry to insult your home. My concern for my missing colleague clouded my judgment.

CNet is confirming that James Kim's wife and daughters have been found alive. Link here. James himself had gone out on snowshoes to find help two days ago.

Very thankful the wife and kids were found, here's hoping they find Kim himself soon.

I was just about to post about this as well, as I saw on a local news network that they've been airlifted to Grants Pass Hospital, which is only a couple miles from where I live. Personally, I have little doubt that James will be found soon.

I don't know; hate to sound pessimistic, but if he took off two days ago, chances are that at best he's in very bad shape.

The most basic rule for survival is to stay where you are, especially if you're traveling with others and extra especially if they're your wife and children. You're best chance of being recovered is if you remain close to your last reported position. I hope he's found, but what he did was unecessarily risky for both him and them.

If I was stuck in snow with my wife and two young ones for more than 3 days I would feel obligated as THE MAN to go find help. I know survival rules encourage staying put, but multiple days of staying put would really make me think about getting help.

That was my first thought too. But that's a damned easy statement to make from the comfort of my heated home in front of my laptop when I'm about to go sprawl out on the couch with my wife and watch some TV. It's a bit different when your family's lives are on the line and you've got no idea if people are looking for you.

Best wishes from here. I hope they find him soon and in good condition.

I am friends with Veronica from BOL and she says everyone at the office is pretty messed up about this. Last time I talked ot her they were just getting the word about Kati and the kids and everyone seemed super happy, but then they were still kind of sad that James wasn't with them., I hope he's ok. He's somewhat of an athlete, but it's very cold in that part of Oregon right?

I wonder if we'll ever find out what really happened to them.

The worst decision you can make if your wife and children's lives are on the line is to go out and play hero when you have little understanding of the situation and how to get out of it. The worst decision to make is to start wandering around in the woods with no idea where you are and where you're going. You not only will put your life in jeopardy, but you're also leaving your loved ones to the tender mercies of Nature and the elements without you to be there for them in case anything goes wrong. I hope he's found, but what he did was incredibly misguided.

Having been through arctic survival training, there is a great debate even from within the ranks of instructors whether to sit tight for help or go seeking out help.

From what I remember of the course (I was stationed at a unit that on occasion operated above the arctic circle) the 'gut' feeling was that it was better to keep moving BUT to make some sort of visible marker as you moved (say drawing an arrow in bark of a tree in the direction you're moving). They also pressed upon us to always keep a container (ours was a pouch the size of the small Crown Royal bag) with some 'basics' in there. You'd be surprised what a few bullion cubes and a mini-saw could do. Those of us who stuffed there pouch with cigarettes had to beg and borrow from those of us who took the pre-trip discussion with more than a grain of salt.

That said in these situations I always think of the survival tip my grandfather told me:

Grandpa Bordone wrote:
Always bring a deck of cards when you're out and about that way if you get lost, stranded or whatever you can start playing solitaire. Ultimately, at some point during the game someone will come along and tell you how to play your hand.

I'm very sorry to hear this. What a terrible trial for all involved.

It seems that people are constantly getting lost hiking/driving in the woods up here in Oregon, and they're almost always found cold, tired, and hungry but ultimately OK. Honestly, there are far worse places to be lost.

The discovery of his wife and daughters is teriffic news, and I expect he'll be found soon.

James must be a smart man to be in the position that he is in life. I have faith that now that they know the area he was in, they'll start finding markings or a trail he made. At least tonight is a warmer then usual night here in Oregon.

Don't want to be a downer, but that's not always the case, sadly. There was an 8-yr old autistic boy that disappeared around Crater Lake a month or so back, but he was never found.

Of course, that was an unusual case, but most of the time, the missing people are found. We've got really good search & rescue teams up here, but with the autistic boy, they couldn't make any loud noises or use rescue dogs. Frankly, I'd be surprised if James isn't found within the next day or two.

I don't think it's fair to make these kind of judgements unless you've been in that situation. And frankly, I think this kind of armchair QBing a situation like this is just plain silly and insensitive.

I really hope that they find James okay. I was encouraged when I checked the news this morning to see that they had found three of them, but saddened that James wasn't with them.

I agree with hub that the armchair QBing is probably inappropriate, but I want to add anyway that I completely understand his decision to go look for help, because staying put forever, unless help finds you, is a no-win scenario.
