That Old Webcomics Trawl
Friday, December 1st, 2006 - 11:51am
So, found any great new ones recently? An old favorite hitting a rich vein of form?
I'm happy that Elf Only Inn is back, after a two-year hiatus. Hooray!
Achewood is consistent joy. I wish i'd thought up "Man Why You Even Got To Do A Thing" as a 'Zine title.
Girls With Slingshots. Hooray.
Dr. McNinja needs no mention or link, but America Jr. is a joy.
Fortune's Fools, bringing the Medieval fun.
Multiplex for more Movie-Comic humor.
And lastly, XKCD, which probably combines Advanced Mathematics, Science and humor better than anyone else.
And then of course there's this week's VGCats which may be the single most spectacular "Pot-Kettle" example i've ever come across.

Here's what I read regularly:
PvP Online
Order of the Stick - Comic about a D&D world with lots of meta-humor about the D&D 3.x system itself
Dinosaur Comics - Often surreal comic where the panels stay the same each strip, only the dialog changes
Sinfest - About a variety of things, mainly Slick and Monique, also the cat and dog (whose names escape me)
Dresden Codak - Found this linked from Qwantz and loved it. Very surreal, smart, with great art. Unfortunatley not updated often.

Get Your War On, left-learning clip-art comic strip about political issues. Very aggressive, very sarcastic, very funny.
Perry Bible Fellowship, has nothing to do with the Bible. Well-drawn and hilarious, though the author doesn't shy away from the occasional bit of tasteful nudity, so be careful if you're at work.
Super Mega Comics, poorly drawn stick figures. Non-sequitor, crackhead humor at its best. If you like shows like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Robot Chicken, you'll like this.
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.
Spore
Most of my regular reads have already been mentioned, so I'll just add these two:
Overcompensating - Actual Things That Happen To Jeffrey Rowland. Although I suspect there might be some ever so slight fictionalization going on.
Dieselsweeties.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
Concerned - The adventures of Gordon Frohman. It's done with as far as I can tell, but hilarious.
Big Fat Whale - Often political but always absurd.

I'm shocked and dismayed that Pred wasn't the one to name-drop PBF, even if he was talking about "new" comics.

Irregular Webcomic - Despite the title it has been updated daily for ~ 3 years now. It's decent gamer/nerd humor presented nicely via Legos and features many, many different themes.
America Jr. is win.
"Three blokes go into a pub. One of them is kind of stupid, and the whole scene unfolds with a tedious inevitability." - Bill Bailey
You all should be ashamed letting White Ninja Comics stand out in the cold.

Agreed. I hadn't even played HL2 before starting to read this comic, and it was STILL hilarious. Definitely worth a read for videogame nerds.

I'm not following any more suggestions; I clicked Pred's link for Elf Only Inn, and now I can't stop reading as 12 years of Internet role-playing come crashing over me in a wave of ironic hilarity.

Woo, update today.

I'm not sure what shocks me more, that this seems to be the only thread sharing webcomic links or that basically none of the webcomics I read on my own "daily trawl" are here. Maybe they're just too mainstream...?
In any event, 'tis better to resurrect than create a redundant thread. My current webcomics in order of my bookmarks. Note that for me "daily" means either every weekday or every day period. I kinda fudge there.
Something Positive - A darkly comedic webcomic that only dabbles in geekery focusing on the life of Davan MacIntire and his friends and family. Randy also does New Gold Dreams, Midnight Macabre and Something Positive 1937 all of which are spinoffs to some degree of S*P. Disclaimer: S*P 1937 has some cartoon nudity. Not for everyone but if you like dark comedy this is a real winner. (S*P and S*P 1937 Update roughly daily, MM and NGD update when Randy feels up to it)
Questionable Content - Situational comedy with a dash of the surreal, it primarily deals with the life of Marten Reed and his dealings with other 20-something hipsters. Sometimes gets a bit too far into indy music in-jokes for my taste and the art in the very beginning is utterly horrible but definitely a good read and I suggest trying it for anyone with some time to kill. (Updates daily)
Girls with Slingshots - Having nothing whatsoever to do with the title it does focus on the life of a girl, Hazel Tellington, and her circle of friends. Like QC it's a 20-ish sitcom with surreal qualities and heavy drinking but a very enjoyable read with really good art from start to current. (Updates daily)
Templar, Arizona - Post-Apocalyptic sort of world with weird but interesting characters. Great art but the story is the definition of decompressed, so don't expect too much out of an individual update. Still, good writing + good art = win for me. (Updates thrice weekly)
Synaptic Misfiring - One of the more "iffy" comics in my book, it's just getting started and seems interesting. The art style is very cartoony and I'm not quite sure I dig it, but it's held my interest enough to keep on my bookmarks. A character drama focusing on Tony Parker, a man who gets amnesia in the first panel and decides he can live his life that way just fine. Also includes some surreal stuff, but at this point I suspect that's standard for webcomics. (Updates weekly lately)
Punch an' Pie - The story focuses on Angela, a bisexual poly who works in a toystore, it's a spin-off from Queen of Wands, a now finished webcomic focusing on the life of Kestrel (who now resides in the Something Positive world in a strange crossover). Both are lighthearted for the most part and while there are some heavier elements they're never mean-spirited. Good read, great art (by the creator of Striptease, listed below), I suggest both very highly. (Updates thrice weekly)
Better Days - A Furry comic (in every sense of the word) it ranges from storylines focusing on rape and child abuse to whether or not all male strippers are gay. Set in America in the 80s (if it was populated by anthropomorphic cats, dogs, mice, hyenas, and other random animals) it focuses on the life of Lucy and Fisk. The author has a bit of a hang-up on butt and breast closeups and at times it gets a bit creepy. Still a good read in my opinion. Disclaimer: The creator of this website also has Furry porn, often including the characters of Better Days. So don't say I didn't warn you. (Updates twice weekly).
Fanboys - A more general geek-driven video game comic, it focuses on the life and happenings of three roommates (Lemmy, Paul, and Sylvia) who are each fanboys of a specific console manufacturer (Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft respectively). It's not quite as generic as it sounds, at least after a bit, and has been getting more interesting of late. The author has some writer's block right now but it should pick up soon enough. (Updates weekly)
Gunnerkrigg Court - I cannot recommend this comic enough. If you're going to read only one comic off this list make it this one. It's about the life of Antimony Carver in a strange world of fantasy, steampunk, and British school system. Good art that's just getting better, great characters and storytelling and a fascinating world add up to a real winner. I found it through Neil Gaiman, how could you go wrong? (Updates thrice weekly)
Minus - Surreal. That about sums up this comic, done in watercolors and focusing on an omnipotent child-god named Minus existing in our own world it's a quirky, surreal, endearing and overall satisfying comic. While I'm content with the web versions of most any comic I read this is one I really hope comes out in a large-print book. (Updates weekly)
Sam and Fuzzy - While the author swears he wasn't ripping off Sam and Max the similarities between them at the beginning are striking, right down to Sam being the straightman to the psychotic-but-cute sidekick. That said Sam and Max, as much as I love it, doesn't have the Ninja Mafia nor are the main characters nearly as fleshed out as Sam and Fuzzy. Good art gets a lot better as the series goes on and the website provides summaries for new readers to just jump into the latest storyline (though who would do that, reading through archives is half the fun!) so getting on board is easy-peasy. (Updates thrice weekly)
8-bit Theatre - One of the first Pixel comics and almost certainly the best, 8-bit follows the story of Final Fantasy 1 with a hell of a lot of deviations and much better written characters. Punchy writing, classic characters, and a lot of geek references to catch make this a great comic despite (or perhaps due to) the lack of drawing ability. (Updates weekly)
Shortpacked! - Another webcomic I'm constantly on the fence about, it's by the creator of It's Walky and is ostensibly about Ethan, a toy collecting geek, and his co-workers at the toy store Shortpacked. That said Ethan's a pretty obvious Mary Sue at times and the comic's mostly about making jokes in regards to toys and toy collecting. There's been some attempt at a serious plot but the last time Willis tried that in It's Walky it ended up involving alien death-rays and melodrama so I'm not exactly hoping for it to continue in that direction. (Updates thrice weekly)
Dr. McNinja - Hey, look! A webcomic already listed here! Well yeah, basically he's a Doctor. And a ninja. And Irish. And he fights giant lumberjacks and zombies and Ronald McDonald . Yeah, it's just awesome in a can, sprayed onto paper and scanned onto the internet. (Updates thrice weekly)
Penny Arcade - You've heard of Penny Arcade. I don't care what you say! Look, you have the Internet, obviously, so you've no excuse not to know Penny Arcade. What, you don't? You're reading this from a printout a friend gave you? Well then you probably shouldn't read this webcomic, it's all about geekish things and samurai warriors who use cardboard tubes and other funky-great stuff. You still want to? Alright I guess, just Google the name since you can't click the link. What? No I'm not telling you what Google is, go away already! Yeesh-da. (Updates thrice weekly)
The Non-Adventures of Wonderella - An always amusing parody of superhero comics in general, focusing on the DC Comics classics like Wonder Woman, this webcomic has fun one-shots with a nice classic-looking art style. Don't go in expecting epic superhero battles, just enjoy the daily life of a hero given life by the vaguely Greco-Roman Godhead. (Updates weekly)
Three Panel Soul - A journel comic of sorts by the creators of Mac Hall there's nothing particuarly deep about this comic but it consistantly gives me a chuckle and it's interesting to watch Ian go through the various artistic styles. Occasionally has a game reference but it doesn't seem to be the focus.
Wapsi Square - A rather well-drawn webcomic that follows the life of Monica Villarreal and her friends, it delves into strange mystical happenings every once in a while. Those have become more frequent of late and since I don't enjoy those parts nearly as much as the daily slice-of-life comics I've let this one wander off my bookmarks. Still a good comic but not something I want to read daily. (Updates daily)
Ctrl+Alt+Del - Remember where I said Fanboys wasn't just a generic gamer comic? Well this one... pretty much is. It focuses on the adventures of Ethan and company. Ethan is a gamer, an idiot, and a pretty obvious Mary Sue at some points. I'm not that fond of the formulaic way most of it goes forward but there is an occasional gem so I'll go back every few weeks and skip through the archives. Still, it seems popular so maybe there's something I'm missing that you'll like. (Updates daily)
Dominic Deegan - A fantasy comic with passable art and a very long and complex storyline, DD delves heavily into melodrama at times and can seem a bit pretentious. That said it isn't on my bookmarks primarily because of how slow it updates and how slow those updates progress the plot. It's much better to read this in chunks of storylines, coming back every few months, than every time it updates, especially with the filler that comes up quite often. (Updates weekly)
Striptease - This comic started out by focusing on Max, a comic artist, and slowly grew in scope until today I'm not going to even bother to try to list all the "main" characters. Freaking beautiful art in this comic, very well done, but the storyline leaves me cold. I just can't really empathize with any of the characters and it's not a comedy so there are no jokes to lighten the mood. Overall I'm not a fan but I'll occasionally hit the link from Punch an' Pie to see what's going on. (Updates twice a week I think...?)
Queen of Wands - Okay, I linked this up above but this really deserves its own entry here. A great webcomic focusing on Kestrel and her circle of friends, this has it all; comedy, drama, dramady, coma... well yeah. You get the idea. The art started out okay and moved up to damn good by the end, it has several crossovers with Something Positive and, in fact, the author ceded Kestrel to Randy over in S*P so she's now a secondary character in that universe. I suggest this for anyone with some time to kill, the archives have commentary on them now so they're that much more interesting. This is off my bookmarks because it's over. Done with. Finito. But hey, there's always Punch an' Pie. (Never to Update again
)
Whew! That took a bit longer than I expected. In any event I hope you all find a few comics in that pile that interest you, I'll be checking out the other recommendations on this thread if you need me. Ta!

Yeah, but that thread seemed, at a glance, to be more of a debate over each person's favorite webcomic than sharing all their webcomic additions (or even just the new ones).
