Suggest me some Graphic Novels (or TPB series)
Thursday, November 30th, 2006 - 5:40pm
I recently fiinished the Watchmen and Batman: Return of the Dark Knight and am looking to get some new graphic novels. I'm currently picking up Batman: Year One and most of the Sin City Graphics. I'm looking to get some good ideas to pad my X-mas list, but am looking for some books that may be missed by the "You have to read these" category.

My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

What have you read/liked other than Watchman and Batman:TDK?

For something totally off the norm I read Persepolis recently. Those are very good. Different, but good.

Besides the glowing picture-rific endorsement of Preacher
Bendis' run on Daredevil
Bone: One Volume Collection
Captain America: Winter Soldier vol 1 and 2
Wolverine: Enemy of the State vol 1 and 2
New Avengers - Breakout, Sentry
Authority - just about any of them
Fables
Identity Crisis
Superman/Batman - Supergirl (Michael Turner's art is awesome)
Exiles (thanks Fed)
I'm sure I'll think of more, but this is some of the stuff I've read in the past year or so. I'll edit and add if I think of something else.

If you like Alan Moore, you can continue on into his dark view of human life with "From Hell" and "V For Vendetta". I really liked "From Hell." I didn't like "V" as much, but it was still good. I'm trying to branch out now a little from his work because he's kind of grim all the time, but those two books are worth reading.
Totally echo Sinatar's Preacher recommendation. You're doing good with The Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Sin City, and Watchmen.
Consider
--------
Y: The Last Man
Ex Machina
Wanted
Midnight Nation <---- wildly under-rated
Rising Stars
the new Conan stuff
Those are all just things that I thought of off the top of my head, but they're definitely good.
And glad you liked Exiles, Hemi!

I really enjoy Transmetropolitan. Hunter S. Thompson in the future.
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
I'm with you on V - I don't think it's as awesome as people seem to think it is. It's definitely not up there with the Preachers, Dark Knights, and Watchmen of the world in my book. Not terrible, but not a surefire great read, either.

Definitely V for Vendetta and The Watchmen. Y is excellent and I'd also like to endorse Runaways. That's fun, if a little less serious sometimes.

I love the Sandman series. I started with 9 but it's definitely best to go from the beginning. It has quite the world to wrap your head around but it is worth it.

A good cult comic to check out is "The Walking Dead" which is a great comic book. All black and white, and it simply follows survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Really great stuff.
Superman: Red Son is the only other thing I can think of that hasn't been mentioned.
"Poor Eli Nooo... *child starts crying*"
"Come on now, there's no need to make that kind of noise. It sounds awful and you'll upset other people." - Ionae from Spirit Engine 2
Lone Wolf and Cub.

I like Blade of the Immortal. It has an interesting story and I love the artwork. It is also on sale right now at Books a Million. They're usually $15 a piece
You'll run into a lot of the same recommendations starting from those two, like V For Vendetta (which I really liked) and Sandman.
The two novels you made an example of are both totally self contained stories, and for that I do recommend some of Moore's other one-shots.
For continuing stories:
Someone above mentioned it, but I really have enjoyed Fables, and it's presently the only series I still purchase, for what that's worth. I also recently read the first book of Ex Machina, and was surprised to find myself enjoying it.
A real favorite is Bone, and they now sell the entire series in a giant (really big) book. Scholastic has started to publish colorized versions, but I'm a purist and recommend the original black and white. Bone is pretty different then the two you listed, but it's a great story, well drawn, and Kat and I still regularly debate various aspects of it (particularly the ending), for whatever that is worth

The awesomeness of this comic is only eclipsed by Robert Kirkman's other series, Invincible. Go out, buy it, rub it all over you, and die happy.
Danjo Olivaw Lives
You ain't kiddin'. Kirkman's work is fantastic. I'm an avid reader of both The Walking Dead and Invincible.
I have just spent the last 2 hours of dead time at work browsing through an online webcomi...nay, webEPIC called No Need For Bushido. Linky goodness here: http://www.noneedforbushido.com

I, too, enjoy The Walking Dead and Invisible. And damn, Danjo's description of its merits cracked me up.
And what Pyro said about Superman: Red Son. Good stuff.

I have The Hedge Knight, graphic novel version of one of George R.R. Martin's short stories. Set in the same world as A Song of Ice and Fire, but about a hundred years earlier. It's pretty good.
My ongoing D&D campaign, Gaald, Certis and Trachalio playing
I would recommend to read Marvel Zombies
It's pretty good, I picked up the TPB and really enjoyed it, quite an interesting concept but it was pretty good.
I have also heard Fable was really good but I've never read it. I do want to eventually as well as Preacher and Sin City I would love to read those as well, but it's all good.

Something would be terribly amiss if I didn't recommend Transmetropolitan, go pick up your copy of everyone's favourite magical thruthsaying bastard now. I also second the Fables recommendations, really good stuff. If you're in the mood some crime/noir, you can't go far wrong with 100 Bullets.
And if you don't want to shell out for a hundred TPBs to get the whole story, Warren Ellis' Ocean is pretty damn excellent, and all in one volume.
"The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all."
100 Bullets!!! Yes! I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned until now!
And Brennil - are there, like, collections of short stories set in Martin's world? In prose form, I mean. I've read all the books that are out, but I'd love the opportunity to read more.

If you're gonna go Vertigo, you might want to check out Hellblazer. Ignore the Keanu movie (although I sort of liked it), John Constantine is a much bigger d*ck than in the movie. Get Dangerous Habits, that's a great read.
I forgot to mention Powers.

Love, love, love Fables, but you've already read it. Out of your list, Yoreel, I suggest you start with The Sandman. It's Big Bad Granddaddy of Comicbooks, and I'm surprised, with your tastes, you haven't read it yet.
Have you checked out Bone? I know it's already been recommended, but I wanted to add my voice to the chorus. Stick with the trades, though; I find it impossible to read the One Volume set. The paper is too thin, and really, it's hard to curl up with a book that's 1000 pages long.

Alot of good suggestions in this and the Vertigo vibe is definitely strong. My fave has always been The Invisibles ... as wacky and weird as it is, it has always been tops in my book. The Sandman stuff is really good also.

Hemi - I also liked the Constantine movie. A lot. And based on it, I read some Hellblazer stuff, which is very dark and depressing. And good, but definitely depressing.

Late to the party, with these....but I very much liked "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" and its sequel.
I picked up and read odd pages of "The Walking Dead" at the Tower Records' going-out-of-business sale- looked very, very good.
Black and white can conjure up a great deal of horror, indeed.....
"Eat Keel, Hellbug!"
I've been stealing "The Walking Dead" from RichyRambo. It's not perfect, but it is very good.
