King's/Space Quest collections -- $20
Wednesday, November 29th, 2006 - 3:37pm
I've seen both of these in my local EB, but have yet to pick them up because I'm wary of how good the games actually were. Each of them have (I think) the first six games in the series, so I was wondering if the older GWJers believe if they would be good purchases. If so, which ones should I play first and which ones should I avoid like the plague.
Yet even then we ran like the wind,
whilst our laughter echoed under cerulean skies...

I haven't played them myself, but the first was a classic Sierra-style adventure, the second a FMV adventure in Phantasmagoria style *whimper*, and the third KQ was 3D. If I'm not mistaking.
The first one is considered to be a classic, with a mature thriller story with elements of the occult.
Don't know nottin' about Space Quest.

I know Parallax has picked up the SQ and I think the KQ collection, but he's been very unhappy with it. The games are essentially the DOS versions running in a version of DOSBOX that is installed when you install the collection. Pretty weak there, Sierra.

I think dejanzie is thinking of Gabriel Knight, not King's Quest.

Aye, he is. I loved those games.

CGW, 1up Yours and PCGamer podcasts all made mention of this. Nothing is cleaned up from the originals and they still may not run right on a XP machine.

Space Quest thru at least the first 4 was a blast at the time. Really fun games. I only played KQ a bit, but it seemed pretty fun too. Both were very popular.

I loved these games growing up. I played throug them all. I will never forget siting in front of a tandy 1000 and typing my way through King Grahms or Rgoer Wilco's Adventures. I would also recommend the Quest for Glory series as well. They are a little more action oriented with actual combat and you can play throuhg them as a fighter, thief, or mage so you get a good amoun of replayability. In fact if you had to get only one collection, get the Quest for Glory one.

I love the King's Quest games, but I've never managed to finish any of them. For $20, I think that'd be a good price.
And I'll second dejanzie in that I "don't know nottin' about Space Quest." Not in confusing King's Quest with Gabriel Knight.

There's a Quest for Glory collection?! I loved Shadow of Darkness (VI or VII in the series I believe). Such a great, great game that I would love to run on XP. I tried getting Shadow of Darkness running on my old 98 a few years ago and it had major problems with excess speed.
If someone can direct me at where I can get this I'll love you forever.

Yep, that's exactly right. DOSBox games with a GUI frontend. Some further aggravating things to note as well:
1. The version of King's Quest VI included is the non-CD version which has no spoken dialogue.
2. The version of King's Quest VII is the Windows version which reportedly has always been broken and some say, can't be finished. I haven't verified this, but if true, it hasn't been cleaned up in any way so it's still broken.
3. For games such as Police Quest which got a VGA remake, that's all you get, not the original EGA versions. This won't matter to most people unless you originally played the original like me and want these collections for the nostalgic value.
The thing that I don't get is that these collections were delayed like three times. I could've put these together in a week by myself (and I can't program.) That they'd release them in this condition is pretty pathetic and I think they should be ashamed of themselves. I might end up buying them anyway though because I am a retro enthusiast and do believe in doing what I need to to play whatever retro titles I want as as legal a manner as possible. But yeah, if you only have a casual interest in these titles, don't give Sierra money for this garbage.

Quest for Glory kicked so much ass. I remember climbing a tree over and over again to build up stats in QFG 1. My character was so good when I imported him into 2 there was nothing that could stop him.

These guys have VGA remakes of King's Quest 1 and 2 available for download that work properly with Windows. They're also working on a remake of Quest For Glory 2 (although they've been on that project for a long time).

For people leery of the cheesy sets, King's Quest I-V, Space Quest I, II, III and V, and Quest for Glory I-III are all available in the Gametap library.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

Excellent, thanks Tomato.
But is there a QfG collection out that runs on XP or DosBox? If so, I'd get that hands down before any of the others.

These were the games that really got me hooked on PC gaming back when I was a kid. Quest for Glory I (originally titled Hero's Quest) remains to this day my favorite game of all time. There was a Quest for Glory collection (1-4) released about 5 or 6 years ago that I still have around here. It runs just fine through dosbox or vdmsound. Actually all of these series were released in collections at around that time too, this is just the latest reboxing of the same packages.
Only up to Quest for Glory III? Man they are missing the best one. Quest for Glory 4 ranks up there in my top 5 games righ tnext to X-Com and FFVI. It is a must play.

Sierra adventure games were all I played on PC growing up. I loved them. Still, I can't see myself going back and playing these. I had fun with these games back then but games have advanced since and I sometimes have trouble going back to old game mechanics. Or 2D for that matter.
