Dark Sector, what happened?
Here's the first trailer, supposedly the first nextgen footage ever released E3 before last.

Now here's the the new trailer.
The first one still gives me chills everytime I watch it. So frikkin' cool! In my biased opinion there is no stealth genre, only Splinter Cell; and this looked to be the second series to step up to the plate and actually make a genre out of being a badass in the night -- er, space.
The only thing I can think when watching the new one is, "Oh great, another torn up, brown city." The little homage with the glaive thing just rubs salt in the wound. Who knows. Maybe it will be spectacular, but I still want that first game dammit. Who am I kidding? The only newish games outside of UT they've made so far is Pariah, making Dark Sector the prettiest dark horse out there.
The one entry in the developer blog implies that showing their game to the press has been the only playtesting done so far, a huge no-no according to people that make good games. I'm still crossing my fingers, though.

What's the glaive a reference to?

Digital Extremes has yet to make a good game on their own so my hopes are low. As to what happened, Resident Evil 4 came out between stealth in space and now, and being the hacks that they are they decided to make that game again instead of continuing with what they were doing. Prior to the stealth game, Dark Sector was a MMOFPS, they have absolutely 0 driving vision for this game at all.
My days of not taking you seriously have certainly come to a middle.

Reportedly they hired some well known taiko drums act from Japan to do the music. It was so nice and original. Now looks like its been watered down.

It's basically the same team that worked on Pariah, which I thought was a pretty good buy at $7.99. I fully expect Dark Sector to suck, and I'll be pleasantly surprised if I hear otherwise.

Dude, have you played a Thief game? That franchise is every bit as good as SC, in my opinion. There is a stealth genre, just not too many good entries.
Also, I just want to reiterate that the "new" direction looks horrible.

No, the two movies. He pulls out the glave in the new movie just like he pulls out the disc in the original. Same animation.
That sounds about right. Some other studio should make a game based off that first movie. A studio with less suck.
Okay, I'll give you thief. I liked it, but stealth just doesn't click for me in first person.

I'm going to have to side with Danjo on that one. I feel more sneaky in Rainbow Six Vegas sometimes than I did in any Thief game, and I loved the Thief games.

While I don't hate DE as much as some in this thread seem to, that trailer looked pretty bad. Decent graphics, but as Sinitar said: So driving vision. Just blah.

It is my unlikely and rather petty hope that complete creative and financial flops like this one seems to turn out to be will sooner or later make the case against risk-averse game development much more eloquently than any of us ever could.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
Rise from the dead Dark Sector thread!
This game is slated for a March 25th release date at gamestop (yeah right)
I had not even heard about this game till a few days ago. After reading about the multiplayer game types and watching a few videos, I'm kinda hyped about it. I especially like the mode where one player has all the god like abilities and has to fight against an entire team of soldiers. Reminds me of the old AvP when playing as a marine and being scared sh*tless because you knew a predator was close and watching you. Almost looks like it gives off that Hidden (HL2 mod) vibe too. Is this on anyone else's radar?
Here's the video showing off multiplayer.

Dark Sector has always been a check out on a rainy day title for me. I mean, being the first ever announce "next-gen" game and all from way way back in the day, it deserves to be played even if only for historical value.
Metacritic sound bites so far seem a bit weak. Average and FPS/3PS don't work for me. It has to have some substantial meat to it or some really freaking cool schtick that sets it apart from all the other games.
I mean at least Army of Two has a couple arseholes that can headbutt each other.

It looks kind of neat. But then, I liked Pariah so WTF do I know.
I'll wait for some reviews. And maybe a demo. Or until it hits $30 somewhere.

I'm kinda looking forward to the game. Something different but same I suppose. I wasn't very impressed with the "Dark Sector in space" concept it was too Splinter cell and they realized it. What we are getting now doesn't break the mold thats for sure. It's now RE4 camera with everything else we come to expect from a shooter.
What I don't like is:
"Innovative multiplayer component – Dark Sector features an innovative and exciting multiplayer gameplay that will allow players to utilize the skills they have learned in the single-player game to excel in a competitive environment."
So you are gonna have to play the hell out of the single player game just to be competitive in the multiplayer aspect.

It may look it, but it doesn't play anything like DMC. The PAX demo played like a Gears of War clone, complete with cover shooting and roadie running, but with a glaive that can pick up fire/electricity and transfer it to other enemies and objects.

Meaning it looked and most likely played like splinter cell, meaning clone or "Splinter cell in space."

Say that again, but this time sexier.
Seriously, the spacey Dark Sector guy had a morphing suit thing that adapted to fit various situations. Sleek and agile for getting around really quickly and hiding. Brutish for hand to hand combat with giant mechs and gunplay. That ain't Sam.
I don't understand why there's no stealth games where you're both speedy and agile. Why are there no good ninja games?

The Tenchu series is exactly what you're describing, except for the "good" part. More like "serviceable".

This was the subject of a lengthy discussion at my office last week, in which all participants concluded that the lack of good ninja games in recent years is one of the medium's greatest failings.
Spore | XboxLive: Fly GWJ | PSN: The _Fly | Twitter
They should have renamed Tenchu to "Ninja Rental." In my book a stealth game requires competent enemies and you should be able to look at your character and tell if he could be spotted without HUD elements. Also it's retarded for the enemies be stupidly near-sighted, like Metal Gear.
Recent years' failings? How about forever?
Splinter Cell was getting there if they'd realized it was time to scrap Sam and bring in one of the super agile mammajammas from the multiplayer.
That's what pumped me up years ago when they first showed Dark Sector. Just the idea of infiltrating a spaceship is infinitely cool. Dammit, why did I watch the trailer again? Just rilin' myself up.
