Final Fantasy III (DS) impressions *Spoilers Aplenty*
Amazon delivered FFIII for the DS yesterday and I put in just under 6 hours. So far, I really like it. Most people know about the screwed up numbering system of the FF series, e.g., FF2 on the SNES was actually FFIV in Japan. This is the original Japanese FF3 and has never before been released in America, with a fresh coat of paint. I definitely think it's worth the purchase. Of course, I have a few nitpicks. Here's what I like and dislike the most:
PROS
This is EASILY the best looking game on the DS right now. The opening FMV is fantastic; I had no idea the DS could produce such graphics. I had recently played Mech Assault on the DS and it pales in comparison.
I love the ability to run or walk; it really speeds up the dungeon crawling.
It's classic FF game play and I've never experienced the "job" system so this should be fun. The "Job" system lets can switch classes on the fly. I've never played any of the modern FF games (Final Fantasy III on the SNES, which was actually FFVI in Japan, was the last one I played). Looking forward to experimenting with this.
The difficulty is "just right." The battles ramp up proportionately for a good challenge, and I never felt like I had to spend a lot of time level grinding.'
Love the ability to save anywhere outside, and I don't need a "tent" or "house" or something. There's also a quick save in dungeons, but it's only a temporary thing if you need to close-up the DS. If you die in a dungeon, you can't go back to your quick save; you have to start the dungeon over.
Excellent manual, but some stuff was still missing (see dislikes below).
CONS
My CONS seem longer than my "PROS," but don't think I dislike this game. I love it. These are more of "wishes" than anything else. However, I thought I should point them out.
As some reviews have pointed out, the top screen of the DS is unused 90% of the time. When you're running around a dungeon, it's just black. There's not even a map revealed as you explore, or even your stats. The touch screen is also completely unnecessary. You can use the stylus to move around, but it's clumsy and the D-Pad works a whole lot better. If the developers were going to go to all the trouble of COMPLETELY revamping the graphics for this game, you'd have thought they could have at least incorporated the top screen, or the touch options more.
Spell effects are short (thankfully), but also boring.
I think the "after battle" time where you look at the characters and they jump around if they increase in job level or something takes too long. I wish I could skip it by hitting "A" or something.
Some of the game features aren't explained at all. For instance, it wasn't mentioned anywhere that I could dual wield weapons. I checked the manual but couldn't find a reference. I only came upon this tip by chance while browsing the Gamespot forums about the pros and cons of certain jobs/classes.
The entire spell system seems messed up. I walked into the first black magic shop and the only spell I could buy was "Poisona," which cures a party member who is poisoned. But, it's not really explained anywhere how I have to tell a certain character to "learn" the spell, or that I can remove it anytime I like. After trial and error I figured it out, but I'm not sure I have all the nuances yet.
There is an ability to "zoom" in an out with the camera that is completely unnecessary. I always have the camera zoomed out when I'm exploring so I can see where I'm going. However, the game FORCES you to zoom in several times so that you can see if an object can be interacted with. For example, if a pot has an item in it, or if you can "activate" a skull to open up a wall in a dungeon, then you'll only know it if you zoom in and see that the pot or skull is "sparkling," similar to loot in Thief: Deadly Shadows. The problem is that it takes about 3 seconds to completely zoom in, so it can be time consuming. However, the saving grace is that you can still activate a skull or search a pot without having to zoom in if you just run up to it and click "A." It's faster to just run around searching all the pots than it is to zoom in on every one.
So, that's all for now. If you like classic FF dungeon crawling, this is for you. I hope that FFIII is a wakeup call to other developers to show them just what types of graphics this system is capable of producing.
Conclusion: Buy it!

Draco - Reply sent. I mentioned this in the mail, but the stylus makes 'typing' the messages MUCH easier. RE: Salamander fight, I'm a couple bosses past him and he was the hardest so far. It took me 4-5 tries, but I found using those damage items (specifically Antarctic Wind) helped me push through.
VM - Added your friend code. Will send a message when the system will allow me.

Chum, I managed to beat the Salamander becuase he didn't breath fire at all during the battle. I hardly took a scratch! Just moved on to the new continent. I've been using the stylus to type messages, but I still don't know how to add a blank space between words, other than having to go to the symbols page to tap the "space" key. It's just cumbersom that it takes several taps just to space out words.

Well I got you guys on my list but it seems I'm only allowed to send mail to Draco at the moment. The friend codes probably register when you reconnect to the network after saving a new friend code. I'll continue trying though. The keyboard setup is retarded. I can't understand why the "space" key isn't with the letters. Sheesh.
I'm finding the game to be pretty difficult. I was expecting it to be more like FFV really. I unexpectly died a few times on simple enemies already. I also have no MP to speak off. This games really makes you think about your actions.

Violet:
I'm pretty into the game, having just obtained the 3rd level of classes. Here's my tips so far.
Try a balanced party of the:
Warrior
Thief
Black Mage
White Mage
If you can save up/find the gold, buy 2 Staves for both of your mages immediately. Yes, BOTH of them. The White Mage can use the offensive damage staves! Especially the "Light Staff," which is actually Lightining (not Holy Powers) and the "Ice Staff." Many of the enemies you encounter are vulnerable to lighting. I can think of several dungeons where enemys are vulnerable to lighting, plus, all the enemies you encounter on the sea in your ship. Also, the Ice staff will be very important for a very difficult, and hot!, dungeon coming up.
These staves let you cast the level one Lightining and Blizzard spells for FREE as many times as you want. However, the damage levels with your character. As your mages go up in JOB level, their damage will increase. At Job Level 40, my Level 22 Black Mage was doing 1000 points of damage with his Light Staff.
Before I could afford staves, I had my Black Mage using a Bow and Arrow, which was very powerful. The Holy Arrows kicked ass against undead, and the Iron arrows were great against all regular enemies. However, i dumped arrows after I got the staves.
Your Thief can wear the same strong armor as you Warrior, which gives him better protection than a monk. Have your Thief "stealing" on every round in the early part of the game. You'll often score potions, eye drops, Hi-Potions, Arrows, and those power "items," such as Bomb Fragment, Tear of Zeus and Antartic Wind. Save these for a difficult boss you'll fight in a very hot dungeon (trying not to give spoilers here!). Also, your Thief's high agility means that he will go first in a round 99% of the the time, and can be the first character to give Potions and Hi-Potions, Cure Poison potions, ect. in a given round if your Warrior or Mages are hurting.
After you get your first set of new Classes, upgrade your Warrior to Knight (you lose the ability to carry Wrightslayer, but you get better weapons soon enough) and change your White Mage to a Scholar. Keep the Thief and Black Mages in their same classes.
I found that the Geomancer's special power was to inconsistent and unreliable for the tough battles.
I kept my White Mage (the damage she was doing with the Lighting, Fire and Ice staves were too good to pass up). However, when I went up against bosses, I changed her job to the Scholar; a great White Mage replacement at this point in the game. You don't loose the only good Level 4 White magic spell, "Libra," because the Scholar has a superior, free abilty of the same kind called "study." You can use it as many times as you want on the enemies and learn their weaknesses! You also get the benefit of the black magic spells. The Scholar's BEST attribute though is the abilty to DOUBLE the damage/effect of the Power Items (like the Bomb Fragment). These power items are KEY in the boss fights and the scholar's ability to double their damage was great.
When going through dungeons, always use the white magic spell "teleport" to exit a dungeon after you've gone through the whole thing, but right before you fight the boss. It doesn't take very long to run through the dungeon again as you're skipping all the side paths for treasure chests, and you're also probably stronger than you were when you first entered the dungeon. This way, if you die while fighting the boss, you didn't lose all that time you spent gathering treasure and leveling up.
Also, I mentioned before that I would change my White Mage to a Scholar during boss battles. Remember that when you change jobs, you need to go through a few battles before the class is "fully activated," typically, that's 4 battles. So, I would clean out a dungeon, teleport out, go to a town to rest up, save, then go back to the dungeon and switch jobs then. By the time I got back to the Boss, I would have gone through the requisite "activiation" battles for the class.
Good luck! LMK if you get stuck!

I genuinely hope the game gets more difficult... I've only just passed the sea monster shrine portion, and I'm disturbed at how lopsided the combat seems so far. My black mage does more damage with a bow & arrows (usually in the 200-300 range) than either my black belt or warrior, and those two are doing sick damage as it is. Most enemies (except when I'm in "mini" status) drop with only one hit from my team members (aside from my white mage, who just defends).
However, I do take heavy damage from the enemies if they survive my attacks. I figure that's due to the weakness of my equipment. For that matter, my warrior does more damage unarmed than with the best sword I have found so far. What's up with that? ![]()
Just seems really odd so far, not at all what I was expecting in terms of the strengths/weaknesses of the characters based on their class types.
I think the disparity in damage you see is related to their Job Level. I'm dissapointed that it affects the characters so much. The game encourages you (Even requires it in some cases) to change jobs often, but then penalizes you for doing so. I hate the job system so far. Now that my Knight is Job Level 35, he's really kicking ass. But he sucked for a long time. My mages were out classing him for a long time with their staves.

...job system bites...
This is the sort of thing about which I was concerned. I've played a lot of FFV in its various incarnations over the years, and there are some inconsistencies there, too. For instance, when I equip a Berserker with a big, bad weapon and give him the Knight's Two-Handed ability, he actually does less damage than without the Two-Handed ability.
As another example, give a non-Monk character the Monk's Barehanded ability and the game will still optimize that character with the most powerful weapon he/she can wield.
I don't think I'll end up skipping this one, of course. The only time I ever actually played it was a ROM the original Japanese Famicom game translated into Portuguese (a language which I do not speak). I got about an hour in by just guessing but got really tired of that approach.
If I didn't drink, Crom would laugh and cast me out of Valhalla when I die. Peer pressure I can handle, but not when it comes from Crom. -Lobo
Hey now, I actually love the job system, Mr. Razor! ![]()
And Draco, if my characters' job levels were uneven I'd chalk it up to that, but these are characters at the same level & same job level (with a max difference of 1) on the first jobs I picked for them once jobs became available. ![]()
Like I said, hopefully it balances out and gets more challenging too. ![]()

I forgot to add that there is some sort of WiFi feature whereby you can send "emails" to other FFIII players over "Mogglenet" or something like that. You cannot unlock some unique dungeons and the Onion Knight class unless you send at least 7 emails to other human players, and you unlock some quests by sending emails to in-game characters. I'm about 15 hours in and having a blast. It has it's quirks, most of which you detailed -- specifically no dungeon map on the top screen -- but it's forgivable given the portability factor. As far as the magic shops are concerned, they always have the "black mage" character regardless of what spells are for sale.
What jobs have you tried?

Hooray for forced implementation of unnecessary features! Are there any stylus-based drawing puzzles?
NOTE: This is not a doodle bug.
Spore
Oh geez, I sure hope not.
The zoom function is driving me batty, I must say. Otherwise, any complaints I have are minor in the face of the game being awesome overall. I'm still wishing I could find some solid info on what benefit levelling up jobs actually provides.
I've never figured out what my friend code is or used, it, but I'll check the manual tonight. Right now I've got the classic FF party: fighter, monk, white and black mages. The thief seems useless in this version, but the Ninja character ultimately looks cool. The manual is woefully pathetic in giving me detailed info about the other jobs.

Even though I know better, I decided on Fighter, Red, Black, White. Bosses drop quickly.. if I can stay alive. I'm not entirely sure (avoided gamefaqs and the like thus far) but the Ninja job may only be accessible if you send messages via the WiFi feature.
I wouldn't say they're forced (as in C:DoS), just that you can use it if you'd prefer. So far, other than replacing the main character's name, it's remained tucked away. I suppose you could say they underused the feature, but that's better than half-a$$ed implementation in my book.
I stopped using the zoom feature after the 2nd dungeon as the "secrets" are pretty obvious and nothing gratuitous (over)use of the A button can't handle.

I hadn't realized this had come out already. I guess I gotta get a DS now. Once I'm done with the secondary characters' Lunar Ruins in FFIVA and all of FFVA and FFXII...sigh. So much FF, so little time...

One thing that bugged me was that I had no idea why I lost the ability to use the Wrightslayer when I changed from a Freelancer to a Fighter. The item description gave no indication that only a certain class could use it.

My party is a Warrior, Monk, White and Black Mages. I just spent a ton of time leveling up in the Molton Cave and fought the Salamander Boss and he handidly wiped me out. Everyone was at Level 17. Man, this sucks. I'm going to try switching the Monk to a Warrior and see if he can hold out longer. The Mages don't last long, but their use of the Blizzard item works the best.

Aw, crap. That's mostly okay, though. I know this is a special kind of blasphemy in a FF thread, but VI wasn't as earth-shattering and mind-blowing for me as it was for everyone else. I enjoyed it a great deal, but not nearly as much as I'd have to in order to buy it again.

I've been playing FFV advance for a few weeks now so I'm pretty familiar with the job system. I wonder what is different though. I have a red mage, white mage, monk and thief. Thief is only useful as long as I can learn "find passages." Hopefully that's a skill in this game.
I agree with pretty much everyone with the cons of the game. The zooming camera is very annoying. I also hated choosing a job without any type of information. I know they are explained in the manual but I don't understand why the jobs had no explanation in game.
Other than that, the game is gorgeous. I actually love the 4 main characters. And yay, the job system again. Now all I need is some Mognet love.

Sending mail to other players lets you unlock the secret "Legendary Blacksmith" Quest.
Send a message to each of the 4 in-game characters. You should get responses. Once you've sent and received a message to another player over Mognet, you can send a 2nd message to the in-game characters and you'll receive responses. You won't receive a 3rd round of responses unless you've sent/received another Mognet message. And so on.
Once you've received 4th and 5th messages, you'll can start doing the quest. Theres'a good post on the Gamespot forums further detailing this. I'll copy and paste the first part.
