Anyone else shifted to renting games?
I've got a stack of original Xbox games nearly as tall as me. With the 360 which I bought last Feb., I own 2--count 'em 2--games.
PGR was part of my system purchase, and I bought Oblivion because it was required by federal law to do so.
That isn't to say that I haven't had a lot of fun with the 360, but I have been completely satisfied with renting from Gamefly. I'm tempted to buy GOW just for the ongoing multiplayer, but I also realize that in a month or two it will be harder to find matches with people like GWJ'ers.
Anyone else made a dramatic shift in their buying habits with the latest generation of consoles? I'm left wondering what it would take for a game to really compel me to pay full price anymore.
I'm also worried that the rental model will soon be undermined by having to buy bits-and-pieces online to make a game "complete". I wouldn't be surpised if in a year or two we are buying only a lower-priced "shell" that we then have to fill out through online purchases.

After buying GOW and with R6:Vegas and HL2:E2 purchases on the horizon, I really don't see any reason to keep my Gamefly account since I'm basically paying $15 a month (one game) and not even renting anything.
Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.
I restarted my Gamefly account when I got my new 360. I wanted to be able to play the "new pretty" with the gang here, but didn't want to actually buy some game that I may or not want to hold for long. I definitely don't think that renting is a "no-brainer" decision, but it works for me.

I tried to switch to this, hoping to lessen some of the pinch from having a new system and plenty of games to play.... but my Gamefly rentals keep not showing up. Today is the last day for the second copy of FFXII to be delivered... and I bet it won't be there. Of course, this is the point where Gamefly will tell me to take a flying leap.

I'm not trying to be snide, but what makes you think the "shell" will be priced any lower? As Bill Harris (and others, I'm sure) have pointed out, EA has already started charging $60 for a game with $50 in unlockables (Nov 3 blog.) The game is Need For Speed: Carbon.
Granted that's not exactly what you're talking about - that "extra content" is apparently unlockable by playing through as well. However, I don't see why EA would charge less for the main content if people are still willing to pay full price and then pay for the extras on top of it. You can probably send a message by not buying those games or at least not dishing out for the extras.
Personally I'm scared for the day when you get stuck and an in-game ad pops up offering to sell you a tip for real-life cash just by pressing select. At least there's gamefaqs, but that would drive me batty on principle.

As for rentals, I haven't tried Gamefly but it's a possibility in the future. There are a lot of titles I'd like to try and not enough friends in the area with new games to sample.

I probably end up buying only about 10% of the games I play--the ones that I just have to have on release day. The rest are all rentals, via GameFly or Gamerang. Gaming is just far to expensive a hobby otherwise.

.... seriously, yeah, it can go both ways .. but what I envision is them eventually selling games at like $30 or $40 and implying they are giving us a great price for some sort of "core" or "starter" gameplay, when in fact the bulk of the game needs to be purchased online for an additional $30 or $40.
I'd agree that some of this current "unlock" stuff is just the beginning. I am sure the publishers have a long-term plan in mind for undermining the rental and resale business, since it is cash out of their pocket.
I have found that for most new games, you can flip the ones you don't like on Ebay and make back enough to make Gamefly not worth it. Of course, I have someone who does the Ebay legwork for me.

I am a heavy GameFly user. I buy the games that I can and that I care to support with my dollars, and I rent a ton of other things to try, or to fill lulls in-between games that I really want.

I started with Gamefly then moved on to Gamerang. Gamefly was taking too damn long.
I used to do the weekly trip to Blockbuster back in the day, but for the price of what 2 games a week costs me, I can get a couple a month or keep one for an entire month. $14.99 or even $19.99 a month makes a much smaller dent on my wallet than $60 for every new game I want in a month.

I've taken a somewhat similar, yet different strategy. I subscribe to the "Official X-Box Magazine" and basically play the demos. Every now again I'll buy a good game, but for $29/year it fills the same role as Gamefly for me.

I use a great game rental system... it's called eBay. Buy a game that I want, and when I'm done with it I sell it. I feel much better doing that than lining Lackluster's pockets with over 8 bucks every time I want to try a game. Gamefly... eh. I'm on the East Coast, it takes entirely too long to get a game. Plus, I don't try enough games at this point to warrant the monthly cost.

I had the same problem with Gamefly - took forever and a day to get a game.
I find that I rarely play a console game more than 15 minutes anyway, so the demos are usually enough for me to sample the game.

I take the Xbox Live Marketplace approach... I download and play the demos, and buy the good games every now and again. (plus I save on the $29/year)

Yeah, that too. Try the Demo, buy off eBay (or retail if it's a new release), sell on eBay later.

I tend to keep the game until I beat/get bored of it. Usually that's about a week (boredom) or two (beat).
I got tired of buying a game playing it for 2 weeks, then having it collect dust on a shelf. Then finally realizing that I haven't played it for 2 months and that I'll more than likely never play it again. To which, leads me to sell the damn game, but it's already been 3 months since I bought it and I can't get even half price for it. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!. [/crazy nervous break down]
I live on the piss end of the country. It took 7 days for me to get my first game from Gamefly. 2 weeks to get my second... With Gamerang, it usually takes about 4 days from when I ship out the game to get my next one. Within the last month, I've played: Splinter Cell: DA, Test Drive Unlimited, Lego Star Wars 2, and RS Table Tennis. All that for $14.99, as opposed to $60 for Splinter Cell, $40 for Test Drive and Lego Star Wars, and $30 for Table Tennis. I'd say it was worth the monthly cost...

I use a combination of that and a 1-game/mo. Gamefly subscription (that I'm cancelling this month).

Another penis end of the US Gamerang user. Signed up Tuesday last week and got my first two games (Gears of War, and Saints Row) on Saturday. Let's see how this go.

I bought almost all of my console games up until I got my 360. Then I found out about GameAccess.ca and switched to rentals. I was always too lazy to go to Rogers Video (ugh) or Blockbuster (mega-ugh) and they make it easy since I don't have to go anywhere and can keep the games as long as I want. I don't mean to sound like I'm a shill for them, they're just the reason I went to renting. I decided that paying $70 for a ten hour game wasn't worth it anymore when I usually beat the single player in a few days and with a few exceptions like Gears of War, multiplayer is something I rarely use. The next game I'll actually buy will probably be Mass Effect.

I've been using Gamefly for about 6 months - since I got my 360. I couldn't justify paying $60 per title, and not all the games I want to play get demos on Live. So, Gamefly bridges the gap between playing a demo and buying a game. In the time I've been a subscriber, I've paid about $150 in rental fees, and have probably played 3-4x that amount of games (6 DS titles and 5 360 titles). I will say that I'm frustrated by how long it takes to get games - even here in Seattle. If the post office would scan them everytime, it would be much quicker. Or if I wouldn't be so lazy - I could take them in and get them scanned personally...
But I digress. I'm happy with Gamefly, and will probably bump up to 3 at a time once I get a Wii.
Amazingly enough, my copy of FF12 showed up today. So, now I'll "keep it", spend the Gamefly dollars I have, and cancel the subscription.
Maybe Gamarang is a better choice... but I'll likely hold off until after Christmas.

Okay, Gamefly has been a bit better for me lately, and I like the buy-it program (oh, and that they're switching to white envelopes instead of bright orange "steal me" ones). I'm still thinking of a change to Gamerang or Gameznflix.
I like being able to try out games that I wouldn't have *ever* tried otherwise.

I should rent. It's funny how I look at video games (or all media for that matter since I do the EXACT same thing with books, graphic novels, movies, etc.). I look at them like I want to own them because of the joy of just owning something that's a work of art. I want to treasure it, see its box sitting on my shelf as I work my way through the game. Then, inevitably, I get to a point where I don't want to play the game and I sell it anyway. And that causes much pain and consternation. Because inevitably I hold onto it forever. Kind of like I did with both Katamari games. I held them and I looked at them and I thought (I'm going to regret selling this someday).
But then I thought to myself. Do I ever *really* want to play Tecmo Super Bowl again? A game I once held above all others. Do I ever really want to read V for Vendetta again? Really? Do I ever want to read Asimov's Foundation series again? Won't I just want to read something new? And now my current Dilemna. Will I really want to play Shadow of the Colossus again, once I've experienced it?
And I think that's the key word. Experienced. I'm never going to get to experience the first time I beat Fire Emblem for the GBA or the first time I plowed through the Foundation Series or my college days of being addicted to Tecmo Super Bowl. It's just never going to happen. So I should just move on and experience new things, shouldn't I?
I ask the question because I still don't know. I keep telling myself I should convert to rentals. I haven't yet. The other day I finally sold the Katamaris. That felt good. They were sitting on my shelf looking useless. And I don't like stuff sitting around my house looking useless. So I sold them. Just like I sold the Foundation books, just like I sold Handmaid's Tale, 1984 and V for Vendetta.
I'm a huge consumer of media, but I also enjoy experiencing new things. And I think I have more fun when I'm not clinging to the past, but instead parting ways with Shadow of the Colossus eventually to move on to Bully or something else.

Oh, please. Seriously.
The world is filled with new books I haven't yet read. That's the whole point. I love those books, but I have never read The Dispossed (my current book). I've never read most Heinlen books. Too many books to read, games to play, etc. in this lifetime.

I actually just signed back up with GamezNFlix a few weeks ago. I know that the service was pretty awful back during their startup, but GZFX has actually been shipping _games_ to me faster than Netflix has been shipping movies. I've been sending a movie/game back to GZFX on the same day as a movie from Netflix.. I've done this around a dozen times now, and both services shipments get to me within a day of each other. I'm generally getting my shipments from both companies around 2-3 days after I ship out my returns. In comparison, GameFly was taking a minimum of 4 or 5 days (and occasionally 6 or 7, normally around holidays) for a regular shipment to reach me.
The biggest problem with GZFX that I can see after giving it a second chance is the stock is still relatively low. It has a large number of games and movies, but small amounts of each. It might be a bit tough to get new releases for a few weeks, but the library of 360 games leaves me with plenty to do while waiting for, say, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance.
I'd recommend checking it out again, for those of you that gave up on it. They're offering a 14 day trial for $1, that is not automatically rebilled after it ends.

I still impulse buy, but not as much as I use to. I've started renting games to see if it is something I really need to own or just beat and move on. Like Prey for example.
I use to buy games just so I could show them off to my friends when they came over. Moreso if it had a crazy accessory i.e. steel battalion. Renting saves me money in the long run I think.
I tend to only read things once, and save them. Alot of people ask my why and I really don't have a good answer. A physical reminder that yes I've read this book, or maybe in my twilight years when my memory is failing they will all be new again to me. What I hate is with my bad memory I have 2-3 copies of a few books cause they change the covers from time to time grrr!
I love Gameznflix. Never had a problem with a shortage of titles and you can get 3 out at a time for almost what Gamefly charges for 1 at a time. Plus their warehouse is in Kentucky and I live in Tennessee so its 2 days max to get a title in as opposed to 7 days from Gamefly. As for what I rent I just pick and choose what titles I think are keepers and what are going to be temporary fixes to satisfy my gaming habit. For instance I bought Gears but rented Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I will buy most sports games I am interested in like NBA2k7 but rent others like Tony Hawk 8, NFS Carbon and Splinter Cell just to name a few.
