Elephants with cannons on their backs!!! ELEPHANTS WITH CANNONS!

There simply can't be anything better... Unless they added a zombie horde to the game.

Ok. Everyone calm down. The elephant thing, while cool, is speculation until said screen shot is provided. As far as zombies go, that's only a mod away so give it time.

*checks XFire profile* Damn, its an 80 hour game for me or at least Rome was. The timing on this one sucks.

I swear, if this was an unlockable, it'd be one of the greatest games ever. Watching as your shambling hordes overtake the walls of Constantinople. Only question is, would they be Old-School Day of the Dead slow Zombies, or New-School Day of the Dead fast Zombies?

Probably old school at first, then you'll have move up the tech-tree to get to the new school

Total War: Zombie Era's. I'm so for this game. But we will have to be contend with Medieval 2 for now, and I think it will be a very good diversion until the zombie game comes.

The CE is only available in Europe. If you really want it that bad, you can order it online from here and have it shipped to the US. The release in the UK is the 10th, so depending how you ship it you may actually get it around the same time it comes out in the US anyway.

The US release is doing something interesting. The "first run" of the game will be a Limited Edition and will include the map and the soundtrack CD. So if you purchase the game in the first couple weeks of release in the US chances are you'll get the LE version. If you wait, you'll get the second run which will just be the normal version.. no map, no soundtrack.

There's a video out there somewhere I saw a while back that shows them in action. I'll post it if I can find it again.

That's the version I am looking for. I mainly want the soundtrack, as the RTW soundtrack was pretty good.

I found the video I had seen but in watching it again I realized it doesn't show the cannons. It shows 5 or 6 elephants with 3 guys in the howdah (I guess that's what you'd call it, not sure if they had another name for it) armed with rifles and firing down on the enemy.

In case anyone cares, Best Buy is giving a $10 gift card with the purchase of M2TW next week, and double reward zone points for it.

They are advertising that they will get it in on the 14th.

I believe it's what some of the hardcore fans call "fantasy" units. Kind of like the flaming pigs in Rome:TW. One general in one battle ordered a bunch of pigs to be covered in oil and he set them on fire and herded them at the enemy's elephants to scare them. So then the devs throw it into the game as a regular unit like it was a common practice in Roman times to do that.

So I think the elephant cannons are pretty much like that. I can't find any historical reference on the internet about it so some crazy general must have tried it out at some point and the devs thought it would be cool to put in the game (to which I agree ). As far as I know, in the game, the unit is only available to the Timurids (unless there are mercenary versions). Another debatable unit is the Turk's Monster Bombard which is the largest cannon available in the game (made up name I'm thinking). It's based on the cannon built by the Turks specifically to be used in the seige against Constantinople (Istanbul) because the city's walls were so thick. The thing was so big and took so many men to load and shoot it that it could only be fired like 7 or 8 times a day.

-edit-
Okay, how about camel cannons?

Vega, so do you like regularly visit camelphotos.com or was that just an accident?

Also, does anyone else find it strange that it's described as a RTS game from a RTS studio...

As far as I remember it was a combo of turn based and rts.
Further proof that buzzwords rule the world...

Heh...

Moving on, when cannons first came into general use, they had trouble mounting them in very stable environments (like a ship for example) because of the recoil. While elephants, donkeys and camels may have been used to transport cannons, I can guarantee cannons have never been successfully fired from the backs of said creatures.

Now its a different matter altogether if cannons on the backs of elephants should be included in video games. I for one would like to see it.

How did M2:TW going gold boil down to a debate on the use of early cannons?

Regardless, I'm in. Post your retail sightings when you find them. The folks in Europe will see it this Friday and the North America folks will see it next Tuesday.

Well, I sure hope they won't add phasers to the game.

But I would agree with TrashiDawa, I also don't think it would be possible to fire a canon from a creature, the recoil would make them all do back flips. Which they should add as well to the the game. Nothing as cool as canon shooting backflipping elephants.

Or Camels. You could experiment with various creatures, and all sorts of different cannons, different ammo, angles, rate of fire...the giraffe's would be a problem 'cause they'd keep shooting their own heads off! Unless they fired backwards! Kewl! Reverse guns to cover a retreat! There's a whole new micro-management aspect to the game: Animal/artilliary warfare:

"Sir, there's a heavily armoured menagerie attacking our right flank."
"Quick! Release the Dolphins!"
"Er, but we're not at sea sir?"
"Good God Man, this is no time to argue! Let slip the Dolphins of war. They'll know what to do!"
