I was able to catch a sneak preview of the movie last night, and let me tell you: The hype is for real. If you're in to this sort of movie, that is. It's short (82 minutes I believe) but it packs a serious punch. I think the longest period of time I went without laughing was about 30 seconds. I won't spoil any of the movie, but it's not for the faint-of-heart.

As I was walking out of the theater, though, I went from laughing my ass off to being kind of depressed; You see, under the hilarious veneer of fecal jokes, disturbingly funny nudity, and exposing idiocy lies a strong social commentary that really shows how messed up people are. During the movie, it's fun to laugh at these people, until one realizes that they are everywhere. I'd say that half of the people in the theater didn't "get" the movie and were probably offended.

Anyway, the movie itself is a definite winner; I place it in my official "cream o' the crop" group with such titles as Three Amigos!, Old School, Tommy Boy, etc. Definitely go check this one out if you're interested in it. I look forward to discussing it more after others have seen it as well.

I'm going to check it out this weekend. This charecter is much funnier than Ali G.

Has the Borat series been shown over the pond? Just wondering what kind of exposure he's had in the states before the movie.

That's good to hear, Bagga. [EDIT: Clarification of references.]
Borat's probably the best character in Baron Cohen's repertoire, in my opinion. His 'reportings' on the UK on da Ali G show were hilarious, and I plan on catching the film tonight.

I heard a radio show dismissively pass over "Ba-RAHT", as over-hyped this morning. I mean, come on, if you can't even pronounce the name right, how am I supposed to take your commentary seriously? It was clear they hadn't seen the movie, considering they picked 'The Santa Clause 3' to be the hit movie of the weekend.

Borat is quite entertaining and I'd be happy to see the movie if it is anywhere near central Wisconsin. Unfortunately, we tend to just get the big blow-em-up movies and Daddy Daycare on 6 screens here.

It's been part of Da Ali G Show which ran on HBO for a while, but I'd say the vast majority of the country didn't know who he was prior to this movie. Sacha's been all over the mass media in character promoting the movie, though. I anxiously await the Bruno movie coming out in the not-too-distant future.

At my college, Borat was huge. All the videos were shared on our internal filesharing network. Everyone would use Boratisms.

So cannot wait for this movie, been following it since I heard news of it 2 years ago or so.

I like it! It's nice!

His Bruno charecter is excellent at picking on specific view's of others, especially the stuff he did around the fashion shows. You really cannot believe how vapid and shallow some of the people who inhabit that world are until you see one of his interviews with a model or fashion designer.

I disregarded this movie as trash when I first saw the preview but it's really grown on me since, and I'm definitely going to check it out.

I've just heard a lot of talk from some of the interviewees that they were manipulated into some of the stupid things that were said (not that it's any excuse). Is it just as funny despite that? Like, will I have any problems empathizing with the people I'm laughing at and end up feeling bad, or are they really that idiotic/crazy that I will not care?

I'd say that he's going into the interview with an agenda to make them look stupid, and he's good at doing it. I wouldn't hold that against the interviewee.
But how they end up looking stupid is pretty much their own problem.

Just curious but how appropriate is the movie for a 14 year old? My wife and I (major Ali G fans) are stuck watching my brother-in-law over the weekend and were thinking of dragging him away from WoW to go see it.

The Ali G show has been really popular among the college crowd in the US for about 4 years. I'm sure that's filtered into the post and pre-college crowd as well.

I'm not exposed to any hype these days but I do remember a fair bit of hype before Ali G Da Movie. Unfortunately that was more miss than hit, but I agree that Borat is a stronger character. Or maybe we all just enjoy when he helps other people look stupid, because even though Ali G can look dumb, we know how sharp Cohen is underneath.

It definitely earned its "R" rating. See my spoiler below if you want to know about things in the movie that you, uh, may not find appropriate for a fourteen year-old:

spoiler wrote:

There is a pretty long scene where Borat is naked, wrestling with his very fat assistant, who is also very disturbingly naked. He ends up chasing him through a hotel with a fist/forearm shaped sex toy. There is also plenty of swearing "My wife will break off my c*ck," etc. Plenty of other "naughty" words as well.

Bruno is my favorite Sacha Baron Cohen character, then comes Ali G, and last is Borat. Borat is funny but watching him for too long makes me cringe. Even though 82 minutes is pretty short for a movie, I'm not sure I could take much more Borat than that.

Sacha Cohen is a funny, funny man. I read he is quiet and very religious out of character - kind of hard to picture next to his "alter egos." This is a must see for me - I know it will not disappoint.

Comedy Central aired a half-hour preview of the movie wednesday night, I had sort of a love-hate relationship with Da Ali G Show so I was on the fence until I saw the preview. I definately plan on seeing it now, though.

That's sort of how I feel. Situations where people are obviously horribly uncomfortable just don't make me giggle all that much.

Of course, Cohen is a frighteningly funny guy.

Same here (not a big fan of the Office for that reason), but I think I can overcome it for Borat. I'm sure part of the comedy is laughing at him, as well as at ourselves.

I said as much in the other thread, but it's well worth the price of admission and then some. Borat was, by far, the superior character in the second season and it translates well into ~90 minutes of comedy, despite my reservations that it wouldn't be able to do so. The tempo and comedic timing were perfect - my cheeks hurt from laughing so much.

If you're planning on catching this one, it's definitely the type of film to see in a crowded theatre.
