Guitar Hero II
My friend John Harwood has been insanely driving to Wal-Marts and Targets all this week because he swore he was going to find Guitar Hero II early.

And son-of-a-gun. He did!

The South Target in Austin (290) had four copies of the game (no guitars). John bought a copy for himself, his sister-in-law, and me.

And just like that, I'm getting the #1 game of my year a week early. Incredible.

John brought the game over about 8:00. I've got two guitars, so we launched into multiplayer.

New Fact #1: Multiplayer rips this year.
Playing rhythm guitar or bass while the other player plays lead is just kick-ass cool and feels absolutely right. Playing in combo mode is just fantastic.

It's a band, man, and damn, that feels fun.

New Fact #2: Cool options are avialable for video calibration.
You can go widescreen, you can go progressive scan, and the game looks absolutely terrific. And there's even an option to calibrate lag from your HD dispaly. We wound up at 46ms.

New Fact #3: the new practice mode will let you practice sections of songs. Cowboys from Hell, I command you to rise from your gentle bed of human flesh and live in the hellish fear you deserve, becuause I will master II on Expert, and when I do, I'm coming back to pay you a visit, bitch.

New Fact #4: These new songs are gloriously, ass-kicking fun. They rock.
We played the first ten songs in mulitplayer (all that's available unless you earn more), and we four or five-starred all of them with me playing on Hard and John on Expert. That went on for about an hour and a half, my arms turned into spaghetti, and we kept playing.

New Fact #5: Damn, this game looks great.
I expected a small visual upgrade, but with widescreen and progressive support, it's truly impressive. Far less aliasing, better use of color, and more of the unerring sense of style that marks this game.

New Fact #6: Band names. My band is "Concept City Gorilla," and it uses all available letter spaces. If I'm counting right, that's twenty available spaces for a band name.

I had insanely high hopes for this game. They have been exceeded in every way.

I will play this game for many, many hours, and I will have far more perceptive comments to offer. I already know this, though.

I still don't have this game, and I still am thinking of getting it. But it would mean that I also have to buy a PS2, and it would be my first console ever. But I am also wondering if the Wii will be better MP goodness for me and the girlfriend. The choices, those damned choices...

I might have missed something - Cowboys from Hell II in GHII? If so, I will be doing the same thing and going back to the original to kick its ass. It remains the only song I haven't beaten yet in the game.

Also, multiplayer with individual difficulty settings - that is awesome. This just sounds great all around.

Yup, that's one of the biggest enticements for me. I haven't gotten to play as much GH1 as I'd like because everyone I play with wants to play on easier settings.

More GH II Notes
I was so tired when I wrote up the post last night that I missed two things I wanted to mention.

End-of-song stats are really, really satisfying this time. You get a percentage of correct notes for each section of the song, and there are usually ten or more sections per song. That sounds like a small change, but like I said, it's incredibly satisfying to see that much detail on how you played.

The tremendous attention to detail that was in the first game is also here. In tutorial mode, there's a plastic crate with albums in the room, and you can immediately recognize the iconic cover of "Let it Bleed" on the album in front. And there are two large Rolling Stones posters on the wall.

It wasn't an accident that when I wrote "Legend: A True Story" (still available from the link in the right panel, by the way) as a Guitar Hero satire that I referenced the Rolling Stones and their music several times. They perfectly represent both the essence of rock music as well as its excess. So they are an ideal choice as "rockmosphere" in this game.

One last thing: the rhythm guitar in cooperative mode is just unbelievably fun, at least for me. I enjoy playing chords and fast chord changes, and that's where I'm strongest. On long runs and long series of individual notes, I suck. So the rhythm guitar role is perfectly suited to what I like to play, and probably for some of you, too.

I have to go to work (damn!) and then swim (damn again!), but I'll be playing as soon as I can and I'll have much more information for you later. Much, much more.

More GH II Impressions
I've gone through the first ten songs on Hard in career mode.

No failures yet, although I did flash red in a couple of songs. I wanted to start off in Hard so that I would immediately remember--
[let me just insert this editorial note: I'm trying to write while I'm listening to the new Who album "Endless Wire," but this album is complete sh*t. It's absolutely flaccid and almost entirely unlistenable. I've got almost every Who album and all of Pete Townshend's solo albums, so it's not like I've never heard their music before. What a freaking disaster. ]
--the hand slide.

Oh, and if you still haven't played the original Guitar Hero (good grief, what have you been doing with yourself for the last year?), when you do play, spend as little time on Medium difficulty as possible. Medium never requires you to play the fifth fret button, and if you spend too much time there, it will be hell to learn the hand slide when you move up to Hard. I know--I wanted to five-star everything on Medium before I moved on. Big mistake.

Okay, here are some more impressions. I did check out Practice mode, just to see what it was like, and it's fantastic. Pick your song and difficulty level, pick the start and end sections of the song, and you're good to go. When you're done playing, you get a percentage rating for note accuracy. There's no further statistical breakdown, but being able to play a small section of a song is unbelievably helpful. Oh, and you can also select the speed (I think there are four different speeds available).

One other very nice design feature is that you don't need to unlock a song in career mode before you can play it in practice mode.

Again, it's pretty remarkable how good this game looks in progressive scan mode--it's a significant upgrade over the original. I also noticed that progressive scan needed to be re-enabled when I booted up the game today, so you may have to set that each time you play (in the Video options menu). I'll check that tonight.

I think there will probably be more criticism of some of the recordings this time, because the game includes some very high-profile songs. In the first ten, I thought that two were considerably weaker than the others: Surrender and Carry on Wayward Son. They both sounded a little flat and a little slow (at least to me). On the other side, though, Strutter and Message in a Bottle both sounded terrific and both are very fun to play (MIaB really surprised me).

When you've passed the fourth song in a set, you're immediately given the option to play an encore (which is the fifth song in a set). It's very fun, and they don't tell you the song until you leave the screen and "return" to the stage.

I haven't seen many three-note chords yet--only two in the first ten songs on Hard. This is consistent with how they introduced difficulty in the first game, though--the last ten songs of a set were significantly tougher than the first ten--and I'm expecting many more of them as I work through the sets (I'll let you know).

As a last note (for now), there are plenty of funny moments in the game. I've burst out laughing at least half a dozen times. No spoilers, but there are some funny, funny bits.

I've been playing since 11:00 AM and my fingers are ready to fall off.

Encores have to be the best addition to the game and they are mind blowing the first time you do them.

Some changes worth noting are that Hammer-on and pull-offs are easier to do. Also there are 8 guitars that have to be unlocked (two per difficulty) then you buy them. To unlock one you beat that difficulty. To unlock the other you have to five star every song in that difficulty. It took me a bit for easy so I can't even imagine five staring hard and expert.

Don't waste your cash on the making of songs video. That was $2k thrown down the drain.

How can that song even be on there intact? I was a huge Rage fan years ago and that song is pretty much an f-bomb fest.

Ok, the debate can now finally be answered - I swear that the real Axl Rose sang for the version of Sweet Child of Mine in this game. Hearing the full song now and not just snippets, I stake someone else's reputation on it. Edwin, can you check out the credits and confirm this for me?

Brooks Lundy did the vocals for sweet child.

Misirlou was originally made back in 1941, I had no idea. Avril Lange had something to do with this game even though she had no songs in it.

I was pretty well universally impressed with the covers in GH1. I didn't miss not having the original artists then and if they do as a good a job for 2 then I doubt I'll miss them now. Why is it all of the sudden ultra-important to have the original, non-covered versions? You aren't going to still RAWK OUT?

For the most part they do but I've never heard of most of these songs anyways except for Rage, and that does not live up to my expectations.
