Space Rangers 2 up on Stardock for $20 -- no Starforce!
Tuesday, October 31st, 2006 - 7:00am
As mentioned on Dubious Quality, Space Rangers 2 is now on Stardock's system. No Starforce, no encryption, no protection of any kind. Just download and play. After you've downloaded, there's an archive-to-disk option. This is also sans encryption, and you can easily burn the files to CD if you wish. They treat you like a customer, not a criminal. I find it very refreshing.
It's a little slow starting, and feels a bit overwhelming at first, but it's a really good game. IMO, for $20, it's an utter no-brainer. One of the best games from last year.

Awesome. I bought the game at launch, but wouldn't install it on my new computer for fear of starforce. I'll pay another 20 bucks for a chance to play this without Starforce.

Yeah I also bought it in stores, and was very disappointed to discover Starforce made it unplayable. I've now purchased it from Stardock DRM free.

So is this an RTS or what?

lol Lobster. It's an iso-view pausable spaceflight and combat game; an RPG complete with improvable character stats, upgradeable ships and missions; it has text-based adventure missions, standard "get x bring to y" missions played on the map in the iso-view, free-form trading between planets and start systems, and "storyline" missions; it has an RTS game embedded in it for many missions (a small one, but fun.) It also allows you to explore planets and find useful and lucrative artifacts. And of course there are various factions and races working at cross-purposes.
It's a must-have.

I bought this during the Madness sale. Installed it. Played it a lot! Reformatted my computer to make my other games work again (GTA:SA would not start after installing SR2
), and then left it on the shelf.
It's a great game, but $20 on a better service is too little too late for me. I've played it. And right now I have about 6 other games plus a GameTab subscription vying for my time.
If you haven't played it and you like games that can make you think and make you laugh and challenge more than just your twitch factor then I highly recommend this game!
I may consider repurchasing it once we hit another drought, but I'm already forcing myself not to buy FFXII because I still need to play TCSC:DA.... if I could stop playing Bully and training for GH2 that is.
It's good to be a gamer!
Politely rude. Briskly vague. Firmly uninformative.
I saw the post on this on DQ last Friday so I checked out the demo. Loved it and I'm definitely picking this one up DRM free.

Bear in mind that it costs $20, or two Stardock tokens. Tokens are $70 for 10. You do the math. They do have a bunch of other interesting games you can invest in, and you can install on any of your systems and get access to all of them. Stardock is the real deal.

Yeah, but I think you can only buy 10 at a time. Still, if memory serves it's been 5 for GalCiv2 + 3 for GalCiv2 expansion means I have 2 left. I'll have to check when I get home.

Yeah, 10 at a go. But you do that every year or so - cost of two regular games - and you can get a bunch of decent games for the price. That's all I'm saying.

I'm buying this.
We shall grapple with the ineffable, and see if we may not eff it after all.
I picked this up purely on GWJ recommendation. If it sucks, you all owe me $20. Per Goodjer.

If you think it sucks, you owe us $20 each for insulting a great game.
I really loved this game also. Why bother to play a "modern" space adventure game like Darkstar One when you can play Space Rangers 2? I think this has the Dwarf Fortress factor: don't waste that much time modeling ships (SR2 is 2D in space) and focus on creating crazy text-based quests.
Edit: I had to go back and put the "" in modern.
The "This is no longer a Starforce Product" type marketing seems popular these days.
X3 was also just announced in a dvd version that will feature 'No Starforce'

Yup, I saw that on Blue's News.

Did you try the demo first? Silly Lobster.
I'd buy the game from you for $15.

I'll be picking this up as soon as I have time for a new game. This would also be a great time for anyone to try out StarDock, which I very much recommend.

I have the Starforce featured dvd version of this. You watch, in 20 years time, you'll be begging me for my copy once you begin collecting game boxes related to the infamous Starforce DRM of the early 2000's. You'll be salivating at the mouth as you pay 1000's for my Space Rangers 2, Chaos League Sudden Death and Sacred Underworld. There will be a whole market of Starforce hoarding zombie gamers, keeping their boxes/cases mint and their XP machines together with band-aids and duct tape.
It'll be the great collecting quest like baseball cards... like Atari 2600 ET!

Or we'll be begging you for your copy since there's no chance in hell Stardock will still be around (and supporting this game) in 20 years.

Why not? You'll be able to run XP emulation on one core, do your graphics and sound chip emulation on another, and run your display in picture mode (so it just shows a 2D surface at the user-side of the display). It'll be hard to remember you are limited to out of display field gestures, and the use of the "button" metaphor instead of grasping will take some time to come back, but you'll get to it. There'll probably be a hack that lets you just touch the ship and touch where you want to go that'll make things more natural.
Your kids will laugh hysterically at your old skool games.

Stardock is not required to play the game - it's not like Steam in that respect. All you need to do is download it through the Stardock service, and never touch the internet again to play if you don't want to.

Have fun using the same hard drive without even reformatting for the next 20 years.

Why? Stardock can be loaded on any system you own, in perpetuity. Swap disks or systems, just authenticate and download and your games will be loaded automatically. No DRM after you log in to get them.

You guys are overthinking this. All I'm saying is there's very little chance this will still be available for download, whether you've paid for it or not. Which means, unless you have a hard copy, you're SOL.

But you can make backups, it's in the agreement...

Yeah, you can just burn the game to a DVD.

Hard copies are unlimited and free. Just burn it to disk, like Demiurge says. As many disks as you want. You're bound to still have one after the space mushrooms come.

I never got to make a Lobster's Mom joke. This was my one and only.
I played the demo and liked what I saw, but it definitely feels a little overwhelming at first. Like others have said, I'm sure I'll pick this up when I'm out of games to play.
