Logitech Rollerball 'stickiness'

I've been using this for years (this is my second one...and it's the one with the red ball). It's become 'sticky' I.e. when I try to move it around the screen it won't move right away and I have to 'roll and roll' sometimes, or is jerky at times. I've tried new drivers. Tried unstalling them and using XP defaults with no luck. It get's really bad in WoW. There's no way to clean it (not suppose to anyway). I want to say the driver's just aren't doing the job. But maybe it's the ball itself. And although not that much to buy, I'd like some opinion before I do get another one. (deal is my first one last a long time, like 6yrs plus. I've only had this one for a couple). Any advice?

As odd as it may sound pop the ball out of the socket it rides in and check the little window looking black covers for excess skin or skin oil buildup(no pun intended). You can clean them with a cotton q-tip swab with some isopropal alcohol. also would not hurt to maybe with a soft terrycloth clean the ball off too with some alcohol. if its a wireless one you may need to change the battery in it, if its wired then i would look at the underside of the ball in that area. I used one for years with my laptop and had to clean it occasional due to that kind of buildup under the ball.

I have used Logitech trackballs for years. Pop out the ball and inside you should see some little nubs that the ball rides on. If you haven't cleaned in a while, chances are they will be covered with gunk. Clean that off, I just use a thumbtack. The behavior you describe is exactly what happens when these get gunked up.
Thanks folks! You know, I got these newer ones and thought I couldn't pop it out like I could the old ones. But duh! After reading both your post I looked more closely and so that it had a small area you could stick something thru to pop it. Did so and now all is well. I'm so dense sometimes till someone say's, 'hey, do it!'

I don't know what is more funny: Nosferatu's last line, or the fact that I've had two Logitech Trackman devices for several years and never knew I could pop the balls out. I always unscrewed the whole damn thing to clean it! I thought the hole in the bottom was for 'gunk' to just occasionally fall out of...
