Nintendo: Back to my gaming roots

So, I bought an Onyx DS Lite with 3 games yesterday. It was a present for my wife but I will be playing it a lot of course. We have had a GBA SP for a few years but we have not played it that much. What got my wife interested in the DS Lite was Sudoku and the touch screen writing recognition. She was able to try it out beforehand and really liked it. I have to admit, playing Advance Wars on the DS last night was a great experience and has me excited about future DS gaming.

I am primarily a PC gamer but it just hit me this week that I really want a Wii. Playing the new Zelda during Thanksgiving break will more than likely make me feel like a kid on Xmas morning. I did, at one time, own a Gamecube but it had hardware issues, so I took it back. I never bought another one. I was fortunate enough to be able to borrow Jadawin's cube last year and I played through all of Wind Waker and loved it. Other than that, I have not played any other Gamecube game to any great extent. I have owned every Nintendo system that was ever made and even though my Gamecube time was cut short, I am ready to go back to the "BIG N".

I have a few questions:

1. What would you guys recommend for BC (backwards compatible) games? I know I will get RE4 without hesitation, what else?
2. As for the DS, it is Dawn of Sorrow that is better than SoTN, correct?
3. Anyone played the Super Mario 64 for the DS? If so, how was it?
4. Does anyone know of some good quality DS protective cases? (something similar to iskin would be great).

Smash Brothers. Metroid Prime. Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Ikaruga. Tales of Symphonia (if you're a JRPG fan, if not, don't bother). Chibi-Robo.

There, that'll get you started. And I recommend you picking up the GameCube remake of RE1, even if you've played the first one already. It's phenomenal.

Don't believe everything you hear. DoS was good - and it was in the same design as SoTN - but it was not better than its PS1 predecessor.

Terrible. The port will drive you mad. What worked on the N64 doesn't work on the DS. I suggest you pick up New Super Mario Brothers instead.

I just use a canvas one I picked up from Gamestop. Seems to work do enough for government work.

I should be more clear, I am not looking for a case as much as a protective skin that isn't bulky that can stay on it the entire time.

Thanks for the tip on Mario 64, I hear the touch screen pseudo analog is a pain.

Regarding GC games to look for - my wife plays our GC much more than I do so I can only say what I've seen her enjoy. She really liked both Pikmin games in addition to Zelda. Mario Kart DD is fun but not the best of the series (whereas MK for the DS is fantastic).

And I agree with your wife's comment about the Sudoku interface on DS. Unfortuantely the best Sudoku seems to be what's included in Brain Age - which has an okay but somewhat limited selection of puzzles. Any of the recent Sudoko games for the DS have a less functional interface from what I've read.

The only game I ever played on my GC was RE4 and it's been an ugly paperweight ever since. On a side note, does anyone know what the EB trade-in value is for it?

I echo Katerin on recommendations of New Super Mario DS and Metroid Prime for the GC. The Metroid series is possibly my all-time favorite, and that game really delivered on all levels. Best looking game I'd ever seen at the time, too. I would also recommend The Wind Waker since you like Zelda games - it's definitely true to the series.

And of course, Mario Kart for either or both if you enjoy your kart racing!

They're older games, but I really enjoyed Eternal Darkness and Pikmin. Mario Golf was fun also, but it got old somewhat quickly.

I totally agree about the of Sudoku games, Brain Age's is the best for looks, design, and stylus writing recognition. However, I got her Sudoku Gridmaster and the saving grace is you can choose to write with the stylus or choose the number from a numpad, AND it has 400 puzzles as opposed to 100 with Brain Age. Really keeps it from being too lackluster.

As for Wind Waker, I have already beaten it so I may not do that again. Not to mention I will have the new Zelda to play.

More votes for RE4, Pikmin 1 & 2, Wind Waker, Kart: DD, and (I dunno if they're BC or not) Super Monkey Ball 2. The original Super Monkey Ball is fun, but 2 is more and better of the same.
I've got GUN and a couple more that are decent, but I wouldn't say are must-plays.

I, personally, need to play Metroid: Prime and Tales of Symphonia.

I disagree. I'm really enjoying Super Mario 64 on the DS. Yes, the controls take some getting used to, but I think it's pretty amazing that I can play Mario 64 on the the go.

Most of the essentials have been mentioned, but if you can get your hands on it you might get a kick out Cubivore. It's essentially an N64 game (I think it was in Japan) but the design is unique and quirky, and a hell of a lot of fun.

I'll echo Duffman as I think you are being a bit harsh, Kat. Sure it isn't as precise as it was on the 64, but the new content is nice, the graphics are improved and it is still a really fun game. I ended up with 70+ stars and had a ton of fun with the minigames. If you liked it on the 64 or haven't played the game before, I think it would be a nice pickup.

That said, since you are so late to the party Flux, I think there a lot of great titles that you have missed. Kirby: Canvas Curse is one of my favorite games of all time. Although short, it was a fresh and innovative platformer. Also, Mario Kart DS is a can't miss title. Best of the series, imo.

On the cube, I am a big fan of racers and I absolutely loved F-Zero GX. Fast, great tracks, and brutal difficulty. It kept me hooked for a long time.

EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot Ikaruga. If you like classic shmups, then this game is for you. It was my favorite shooter from last generation.

If you're looking for Gamecube games for playing on your Wii I quite enjoyed:

  • Mario Kart: Double Dash
  • Metroid Prime (both of 'em)
  • Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
  • Viewtiful Joe
  • Killer7 (not so much for the gameplay but for the art style)
  • Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (I second Katerin on this one. It's an awesome game)
  • Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
  • Zelda: The Wind Waker (don't listen to the snobby nerds, the cell shading style is gorgeous)
Super Paper Mario was supposed to come out for the cube this year, but as far as I can tell it's a Wii only title now.

Well, I've never played the N64 version, so as a platformer-junkie, I was really looking forward to SMB 64 on the DS. But the DS port controls were so imprecise and wonky that after ten minutes, I never picked the game back up again. (The minigames that were bundled with the game were fun, though, I'll give you that. I liked those.)

For me, it's the D-pad. Mario^64 was good with that awful three-pronged winger for the N^64, but the DS D-pad is worse than the PS2 and XBox 360 D-pads.

UGH. This game is absoulte pure boredom if you don't have a group of people to play it with... now, maybe you and your wife can get some heated matches going, but if not... skip this game with extreme prejudice. I bought the game after hearing all the great, glowing reviews, and played it for about 45 minutes before shelving it.

Agreed-- M64 is pretty rough, but NSMB is one of the best platformers in the last few years. And, btw, arent most of those same minigames also present in NSMB?

Flux wrote:

The DS itself *IS* a case... they're pretty damn tough. Still, I guess that if you want something else, I know that Best Buy has "play through" cases for the DS for $9 or so. Importers were at one point selling ipod-like silicone skins for the DS, but not sure how that's shaking down since Lik-Sang is going out of business.

As someone who bought nearly every single decently reviewed game for the DS in June, I'll just chime in to say that I can't stand K:CC. Maybe I was coming in with expectations that were too high... I dunno... I'll maybe go back and try it again.

Quote:

Great game, true... it's just too bad the online racing is so broken (fricking snakes).

As for other Game Cube games... I can't believe no one has said SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE yet... I still think that game is pretty great... a definite worthy sequel to Mario 64. ETERNAL DARKNESS is a great game, as others have said... looks a little dated graphic-wise now, but a fun twist on the usual Resident Evil formula.

Quick hits.

- I think Kirby is great. Definitely try it. It's unfortunately one of the few games on the system (along with Ouendan, Nintendogs and some others) that is truly innovative and uses the touch screen well. Definitely try it out (along with Ouendan, Nintendogs, etc.). Just for the experience of them at least.

- The D-Pad on the DS is awful, IMHO. Aside from the lack of new titles that last longer than a couple weeks, it's the main reason I no longer own a DS. So I would personally advise against playing Mario 64 on the DS. The controls are really wonky and playing the D-Pad for any long period of time isn't pleasant. For some of us at least.

- Definitely play Castlevania. I'm not sure how it compares to SOTN, but I hear it compares favorably. I personally loved it and I'm not usually a huge Castlevania fan. It's got great music and moves at a good clip.

- Mario Kart DS is a good title to rent or pick up used. Online is broken horribly as SommerMatt said. But single player can be fun for a while.

All in all the DS is fun. It's just that too many of the titles are way too short. I think SommerMatt said it best when he said it would make a good Gamefly machine. In other words, buy it along with a couple "must haves" that last longer and otherwise just Gamefly the rest of the DS library. It won't take long to play through the good games.

Mario Kart Double Dash is without a doubt the best in the series. MK DS is a very close second. The trick for Double Dash though is you need some buddies to play with. The Gamecube is primarily a party console, and as such, if you've got 3 friends to play along side I recommend the following titles:

Mario Kart Double Dash!
Mario Party (4, 5, 6, or 7. 6 was probably our favourite)
Super Mario Strykers (Possibly the best soccer game ever made)
Mario Golf (We lost a summer to this game)

On the single player side of things, Katerin echoes my thoughts exactly. It's a sin to miss out on the RE:1 remake, it really is fantastic. If only I could get my GC to look better on my HD TV :/

For what, Symphony of the Night on PSone? I found a copy at Costco a few years back. I think it was only pressed in small numbers, sold like crazy, they a few years later they released it as a greatest hits title. Dunno how hard it is to find anymore, but if freekin' Costco had 'em they've gotta be pretty easy to find.

I go back and forth on this. I *loved* DD. The racing and courses were the best we've seen. I also had it in college when there was no shortage of friends to play with. However, the battle maps were too small for my taste. If they could have had better battle maps, I would have like it more. But it is easily the best single player Mario Kart game.

I was thinking about something today, I want to try the Wii at a kiosk before I make my final decision. Now that we are only 18 days from release, don't you think Nintendo should get these things out by next week? I guess it could help AND hurt them depending on how they set the kiosk up and how someone's play session goes with the new controller.

On a side note, ordered Dawn of Sorrow and it arrived today.

Found some new info:

Quote:

Some kiosks are going up in EB/Gamestops as Nintendo reps make their rounds. They aren't playable yet, but the Nintendo reps will probbly deliver Excite Truck some time next week. Nintendo World Store will have playable Wii kiosks (and a party) on 11/4.
