Screw-job at the gas pump...in Iraq

Quote:
WASHINGTON - Pentagon auditors found that Vice President Dick Cheney's former company may have overcharged the Army by as much as $61 million for gasoline in Iraq, senior defense officials said Thursday.
First Boeing, now Haliburton. The Pentagon can sure pick 'em.

Remember when the headline would actually have to read ""Halliburton Overcharged Millions"" before it was a news story? What else ""may have"" happened around the world?

Why does it always have to be ""Dick Cheney''s former company""
I'm bringing sexy back!
The same reason Arnold was referred to as ""former bodybuilder"" 20 years after he stopped bodybuilding.

As I said in another thread, the USA is Capitalism first, Democracy second. The people that think we went into Iraq because of a higher purpose or that it was for the Iraqi people need to stop listening to what Bush is saying and look at the actions that the Bush Administration is taking.
Hey, it''s the Pentagon bean counters that are saying they''re getting overcharged. I guess they all have to be fired now, since they aren''t towing the party line, eh?

I didn''t know that Haliburton was a party...

Good point. I''m sure Haliburton''s brass is packed to the gills with Democrats ... ooh, and Green Party folks too.

You may be right - I forgot that Democrats only work for government agencies and flower shops.

So there is no connection to the republican party and Haliburton?
Silence! *slap*
Don''t you know that Haliburton has our best interests at heart? We should give them all the money they ask for for them to do their job. So what if other companies are doing the same job for less?

According to the reports, a Kuwaiti subcontractor overcharged Haliburton, and Haliburton passed those charges onto the client - in this case, the Pentagon. The reports so far indicate that even after passing on the overcharges, Haliburton has lost money from the actions of the subcontractor. The response of the administration is that if Haliburton overcharged, that the money will have to be paid back.
Yeah, a real sweetheart deal...
To actually answer the direct question - Haliburton has connections to both parties. It has done this type of work for every adminstration since Carter''s (although in this case, we are talking about a Haliburton subsidiary - this is kind of like complaining that you hate GE, because of a commercial you saw on ""Friends"", since NBC is a GE subsidiary).

I hate those GE commericals.

is it ""we bring good things to light""? or ""Life""?
Annunciate dammit!
I always thought Life.
ralcydan, would you say Haliburton has or has not received preferential treatment from the current administrator. I''m not sure so I''m interested in hearing what info you have. (serious here)
I honestly do not think so. Haliburton has dones this type of work for the US government for decades, under both Democrats and Republicans. The last time was in Kosovo, under President Clinton.
Haliburton is a huge company, with almost no direct competitors able to handle the biggest projects it takes on, and it''s main competitor that would be competitive is French. It has a long history of work with the US government and with the Pentagon, making it a known entity when contractors are chosen. It is eminently qualified for this work.
Also, Dick Cheney isn''t a moron. He knows full well that he is under complete scrutiny, and moreover knows that people love to leak information. If there was a single report from someone that undue influence had been used, or even that procurement people (who really make contracting decisions) felt pressured to use Haliburton, it might change my opinion some - but there hasn''t been a single such report.
So for me, simply continuing to say ""Dick Cheney''s former company"" over and over again sounds like a conspiracy theory, not evidence in a case.

Back in 1996 I was a contractor for the U.S. Army in southern Hungary. One of the companies there with a rather strong presence was Brown & Root, which is now (if it wasn''t then) a Haliburton subsidiary.
Is Haliburton the best company for the job(s) in Iraq? I don''t know. What I do know is that they have a long history of doing this sort of thing...which weighs heavily when it comes to DoD contract awards.
I started my own blog so when I feel the need to make an ass out of myself, I won't have as far to go.
I heard on the news that Halliburton was getting the gas at $.71 a gallon wholesale? So how does that jive with the ""Kuwati contractor overcharging""? Which one is wrong or is the extra almost two bucks a gallon for distribution charges?
