Blue Wash or My adventures at IBM

Well, about nine (9) weeks ago, I was informed that my current employer is being aquired by IBM. As part of that aquisition, my department would be dissolved as redundant and I would be out of a job once some transition end date was reached.

Over the course of the past nine (9) weeks, that end date was moved constantly back from October to January '07 to March '07 and finally to June '07. Now I find out that not only do I not have an end date but I now have a full time regular position with IBM as part of their SDS division.

All I can say at this point is they caught me by suprise. The irony is I really wanted to move into a larger company where I would have more opportunity and I was really miserable with all the poiltics and management culture at my current, soon to be former, employer. IBM solved both problems. They're a $9 Billion (with a B) company and all of the managers that generated such frustration and grief with me are moving on.

So at the end of the day today, I will have accomplished two career goals and will have managed to stay employed. Friday the 13th isn't all that bad after all.

Way to go, fella. Congrats on the good news.

Let me know how working for a multi-billion dollar company turns out. I might be looking to make the same transition in the next couple months.

That's awesome, man. Congrats!

I wish IBM would buy out the company I work for...

Congrats CEJ. I worked with Big Blue right out of college for a year. There's some great people there, and one of the rare companies that both have good managers and purely technical track for advancement (i.e. you don't have to become a manager).

Congratulations, CEJ. Nice to hear that there are still companies that recognize when they have a good person on-board and take steps to keep them there.

Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

IBM is practically synonymous with job security. It almost takes an act of Congress to get them to fire someone. Which is a mixed blessing. I've never worked for them, but almost all my friends have at one time or another.

I work for Eye Bee M too. You have been assimilated. I was an acquisition too several years back and am now thoroughly integrated with the Borg Collective, I mean company.

And in case you are wondering, I only check these boards to, umm, perform market analysis of this customer segment's reception of the Cell processor. (Ok, though this is a product of my company, I have absolutely nothing to do with it and am about six spheres removed)

Congrats. I'll have to take some time and bitch about IBM in this thread. To make you feel at home.

About 3.5 years ago I was outscorced To CSC along the same lines. My company sold its IT services to CSC and told us we would probally be let go for cost cutting. 3.5 years later I am still plugging away. One word of advise is to be willing to do new things. It helped me that I was ok with changing job functions. I am sure it looks good on the resume as well.

Well, there's a lot of folks there and the new position is in support of the new content management research lab that they will be building in Costa Mesa. Mostly new server builds and source code hosting for the various development arms.

That's the plus side. The negative is that I have to keep the existing environment up and running until the tranistion is over in October '07. Not difficult but it will be a challenge as more and more of the temporary workers depart.

I am a little saddened by the fact that 80% of the people I currently work with will be out of a job.
