GameStop / EBGames Wii preorder Tomorrow 10/13 "limited numbers?"
Thursday, October 12th, 2006 - 12:29pm
Just got an email that preorders with begin tomorrow. They used the same wording that they did for the PS3 claiming extremely low supply and that they will likely exhaust preorders in a matter of minutes. I dont know if this is just CYA talk or if it is true. I had thought Wii numbers would much higher. Anywho, just a heads up.
edit: sorry, coughing myself. Although the limited numbers talk was still news to me

Yeah, I thought word was Nintendo is making them in large numbers, and there would be 4 million units for a Japan-US launch. Unsure about Europe.
MaxShrek .. looks like Jake.. drives like Elwood.
It's probably just GS/EB covering their asses. They don't want to guarantee anything. They definitely want to prevent another 360 fiasco so it seems they're being more careful with the pre-orders.

Large numbers sure, but probably mostly going to Best Buy, Wal-Mart, etc.
Red Foxx, standing by.
That is bogus info from EB/Gamestop I think. The EB closest to me got 16 PS3 units, the Gamestop got 10. Those same stores are getting 50 Wii's allotted, each. I don't see the demand being as high for the Wii tomorrow to make them sell out that quick.
I just don't consider 50+ units at every single retailer limited supply.

Of course the numbers are limited. They're not going to allocate INFINITY units.
By the way, could you put a space somewhere in "GameStop/EBGames" for me? It's messing up my formatting.

Co-worker and I are hitting the EBGames in the Watertown mall tomorrow. Will post report.

I just got off the phone with my local GameStop. The guy there said they had been told they would get alot of Wii's, but now at the last minute he's hearing there won't be so many afterall. Sigh..hopefully I won't have to stiff arm any 8 year old kids walking in Gamestop tomorrow.

If you don't stiff arm at least five 8 year olds, you're not hardcore and don't deserve a Wii.

There are at least 40 people lined up in front of my local Gamestop!

Yeesh. Looks like I might have to dropkick some 8 year olds as well.

Actually, the funny thing... I only saw like 2 or 3 16year olds, the rest were like parents... or simply older folk.

I waited in line... first time ever getting a console at launch. The store got 36, and there were that many in line 30 minutes before they opened. One person under 20.
I took an informal poll around 9am, and most everybody either had a 360 or were planning on getting a PS3. I guess that Wii60/PSWii concept has some traction in real life.
Local store had 16 for the initial pre-order - my friend, an employee, said there will likely be another round of pre-orders closer to release date. Additionally, he said that the combined pre-order total for games and peripherals on the Wii was about 50 compared to the 3 they had earlier in the week for the PS3.
I ended up passing on the madness today – as long as I can get one by Xmas, I'll be good to go.

Just got back from Gamestop. I live in a very small town (not even sure how we got a Gamestop)..we had about 15 people total. I got there at 8am with the store opening at 10. One other guy beat me there but around 9:30 people started rolling in. I asked the clerk how many preorders they had and he said "I dunno guess I'll stop when the computer tells me too". All in all I ended up reserving one Wii, one extra wiimote, and one extra wii nunchuck.
Oh and SocialChameleon you'll be happy to know I elbow droped several small kids trying to get ahead of me in line

Yep. I just need one to put under the tree for Christmas. Wost case scenario, I spend $300 on something else. Do I really need to stand in line to give my money away in October?

My EB only had one guy so he was pretty busy and unable to inform the 30 people in line that there were only 18 for preorder. Looks like I'll be standing in the cold with my friends who couldn't make it to the store this morning. Maybe I can light my Cube on fire for some heat. I don't have any other ideas for it.
EDIT: Credit goes to the clerk. He gave up his pre-order.

Preordered one today...
I arrive at a nearby Gamestop around 9:30, where I find there are already 12 people in line. A friend of mine had gotten there at 8, and was the first person in the line. He told me that he'd already been to the EB in the Crossroads annex, and that they'd had 20 people in line at 7:30! One of the guys in the line seemed to be "in the know", as he knew roughly how many units the store was getting. He wouldn't tell numbers, but was letting people know if it was worth waiting around. I asked him if it was worth my time to wait. He replied "Well, it'll be close."
Another 10+ people showed up after I did, and the guy stopped even bothering to say anything. No one else mentioned to the line-enders that they probably weren't getting a Wii. They probably knew it. We all certainly knew it. But hey, hope springs eternal. Who were we, to interfere with that?
The store opened at 10, and the crowd slowly filed in. The manager spoke up as we entered, "I have some good news... and uh.. some bad news. I have about 17 units available for preorder... but, uh.. I only have 17 units."
I quickly counted. I was number 13 in line, so I stood my ground. Some of the line-enders left, irritation plainly displayed on their faces. As I move closer to the front of the line, I see the clerk turn to the manager and say, "We've done 10, how many more are we doing?" The manager replies, "Um, 4 more... 14 for customers, and 4 for employees."
Wait, what? Waitaminute! People were PISSED.
"Hey! You said you had 17!" some woman shouted from farther back in the line.
"Yes, well I have 18. However, 4 are reserved for employees. It's not fair to prevent them from getting a unit just because they work behind the counter," the manager replied.
At that point, the remaining line-enders took off. I heard a lot of grumbling about "lying managers" and "should have gotten here earlier". One woman looked like she wanted to start a fight with the store manager, but didn't quite have the wherewithal to stand up for herself. She glanced around around at the rest of us still standing in line, moderate desperation evident on her face. She attempted to make eye contact with some of the remaining patrons, but eventually left the store without speaking to anyone. I wondered if she had been calculating the chances of some sort of sob story working on any of us. Then I wondered to myself why no one bothered to say that if those employees had wanted a Wii preorder, they should have shown up to get in line like the rest of us. However, since I was lucky number 13 (on a Friday the 13th, no less), I kept my mouth shut and swiped my credit card to preorder a Wii and Zelda.

If that's the way they're playing it, I would have recommended he not mention the employee reserved consoles, and just said he had 14.

Disclaimer: I want all three consoles to succeed. I don't own a 360 and I don't want the PS3 to fail horribly.

Update: Struck out in Watertown, will check Westborough on my way home, but I am not optimistic.

Struck out in Sunnyvale Ca. Our local EBGames only had 30. I was 34th in line.
Guess it's ok, I only waited an hour and I got to talk to some funny people. From what I understand, on launch day after the pre-orders are picked up - it's first come first serve.
Good luck ppl.

Calling around in Austin, TX today it seems that all of the EB Wiis are spoken for (it's a little after noon here).
One of the EB employess was encouraging me to pre-order a "classic" controller, as apparently there may be shortages of those. Even after I told him I already have 4 gamecube controllers he pressed on, saying the Nintendo rep told him everybody "needs" one. Sounds like FUD to me. Anybody else hear something similar?

A friend and I went to the nearby Gamestop that was farthest from the city, where the population density's thinner. Of course, the nearby population density probably affects the allocation number too. Actually, that's probably determined by volume of sales.
We showed up around 8 AM and there were 5 people ahead of us, in some semblance of a line. The #5 guy apparently knew the store clerk who was opening, and the clerk said they'd take only 10 preorders that day. The first three folks were young kids like us, in their 20's, and the last two were parents picking up for their kids. We had some amiable conversation, and they were nice enough to hold our spots in line while we ran over to Starbucks and the ATM. The 10th person showed up at 8:30 AM.
While we waited, my friend and I played some DS Mario Kart with the #9 guy in line. It was so damn cold, I had to get out of line just to stand in the sun. At around 9:40 I decided I decided to go to the bathroom so I ran over to Starbucks, and when I came back the store clerk was telling everyone the preorder prices of the games and accessories. He'd already passed out price lists to the first 10 people in line and announced that he was only taking 10 preorders today. Once again, I was lucky that the people ahead of us and behind us acknowledged that I had been #7.
Despite his announcement, the line was still 30 deep at 10 AM. But, as Tyrian says, hope springs eternal. I swiped my card and got out of there before things got ugly. I left with $80 note denoting my reservation of a system, an extra remote and nunchuck, Zelda, and the Trauma Center sequel.
I was so distracted by the line and the coffee and the DS that I forgot to call my girlfriend back to wake her up. And the Starbucks coffee made me sick.

The receipt says, "New release products will be held for 48 hours after release." I think I can just show up at midnight on the 19th to pick up my new toy.
In Ultima Online I used to poison hams and leave them on the ground in cities for people to pick up and eat. I can't believe how many people thought street ham was a good thing to eat. -Elliottx
