GameTap - any users?
Wednesday, October 11th, 2006 - 6:08pm
I know we had a front page article about GameTap a year ago, but services like this are constantly adding things. I'm wondering if there are any current GameTap users among us, and what do you think of the service?
I just signed up for da Tap in anticipation of Sam & Max, and I figured I might as well check out Tap too rather than just buy Sam & Max alone.
Seeing as I never played Planescape: Torment, I figured that would be a good place to start, so I'm currently downloading that.
Also, am I blind, or do they have every Zork game EXCEPT Return to Zork? ![]()

I've thought about trying GameTap, but I like to have physical discs. I like the feel of them between my fingers. Sweet, sweet game discs.....

A friend of mine has it and still enjoys it after nearly a year. They're always adding new games and I've seen they've improved the interface since I tried the free trial back when it started, done a lot of the things I hoped they'd improve like letting the service run in a window. He showed me one of the cartoons they do and it was pretty funny (look for something about the oregon trail)
They're definately on the rise, which is good to see. I've been tempted to subscribe but I havent been pushed over the edge yet.

I've been hankering mostly because of the relaunch of Uru... but I'm waiting on either a freebie or some live reviews.

I got over that a long time ago.
I used to have shelves and shelves of PC games alone, entire bookcases. Then, after moving apartments a few times, I learned the joy of living WITHOUT clutter.

It's not quite my thing; but I do know someone who would make use of the service when she finally gets broadband. Then I'd probably go halfs with her for a subaccount.

I keep meaning to try Gametap, but good grief. I don't have times to play the games I own, much less a digital catalogue hundreds of games strong.
We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea.
Once Uru Live gets going again, I'll be on Gametap.
I thought the interface was sweet. The games are worked pretty dam well for me. But $15 was a bit high to maintain a subscription. NOw it's $10 and tempting.
Well that's what I was going to say, but I decided to not even post until I saw this. (got the info from cheapassgamer.com btw)

$4.95/month if you pay 1 year at a time. That's $60.
And check out these games that they are adding or just added:
Some recent additions to Gametap:
The Last Express
Tony Hawk 3
Planescape: Torment
Colin Mcrae Rally 2005
Shadow of Destiny
Zeus: Master of Olympus
Zork: Grand Inquisitor
Baldur's Gate I and II
Episodes of Sam and Max 1997 Cartoon Show
Episodes of Sealab 2021
New games being added next week:
Sam and Max: Culture Shock
Sid Meier's Civilization III Gold
Far Cry
Railroad Tycoon 2
Serious Sam I and II
Rainbow Six 3 (and Rogue Spear: Black Thorn)
Tony Hawk 4
Yep, as Edwin mentioned, I've got it. I play on and off, mostly because I'll go through spurts of wanting to play certain kinds of game (RTS, RPGs, arcade games, whatever), and then...not so much.
For $9.95 a month, it's not a bad deal. With the new games coming in, it's getting to be even more of a good deal in my book, especially for the older games that I loved to play, but haven't had the opportunity to do so lately. The first 5 Ultima games, a number of old arcade games, Baldur's Gate...

$60 for 1 year? Wow that's very reasonable. Have they added multiplayer games yet? One of the disappointing things to me was that you had all these cool arcade games and net capable games, but the only competition possible was posting your score to a pretty weak little leaderboard setup.
If I had a gamepad, I'd already have been convinced. I wonder when they're going to put out the PC adapter for the 360 wireless controller.

Yeah, I'm all over these already, as well as the C&C games.
Where do you see where the upcoming games are? I didn't see that on the site.
Some nice choices in that list. Looks like this thing is starting to gain some momentum. I signed up with the plan of just trying it for 2 weeks, but sticking with it (with a yearly payment) is becoming very tempting.
If I had kids, there's no question I'd get it, with all the kid-friendly games on top of the good stuff.

Yep, some of the arcade games now have a challenge center, where you can challenge another player to a game. I don't know how it works exactly, as most of the games I play don't fall into that category, but it's there.

At 5 bucks a month, it may be a purchase I'll have to make. Being able to play Ultima III will be worth it.

If GameTap wasn't exclusive to United States, I would definitely subscribe. Unfortunately, they don't want my dirty European non-dollar money. Which is sad, because the idea and the service are excellent.
You can't take the sky from me.
They actually have a pretty impressive list of titles available, including a ton of classics. King's Quest I-V, Quest for Glory 2, Crazy Taxi, Age of Wonders II, Railroad Tycoon 3, Icewind Dale II, Tropico... even ancient stuff like Gateway to Apshai and Might and Magic 1. I may have to bite on this service when they get Sam and Max up.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

Just 4 days away!
Speaking of King's Quests, Ultimas, Quest for Glorys and Space Quests... let's say a person, not unlike myself, has never actually sampled these multi-volume serieses.
What installments of these games would be ideal (best in class, and not TOO old/primitive) for someone such as the person in question?

Quest for Glory 2, Kings Quest 5, Not sure about Space Quest, they left out 4 which was my favorite and I never really got into 5. 1 through 3 are excellent but might fall off your primitive scale. Quest for Glory 2 is going to be on your edge of primitivity but the gameplay, combat, story, setting and graphics (considering what they had to work with) are just so excellent that you shouldn't pass it up.
There are remakes of the first game of all 3 series in VGA that do away with the typing interface, but those aren't on GameTap unfortunately.
Those typing interfaces can be tough. I remember a moment in Quest for Glory 2 where you encounter a fire demon in a hallway. I had an idea of how to deal with him, but finding the words they wanted me to use were so difficult I had to redo that part over and over. The save/load system in all of the games is anytime, anywhere though, so that takes out some frustration.

I did the trial when it was first released and really don't have anything negative to say other than the library was pretty weak at the time. They've added a bunch of games from what I here so this shouldn't be an issue. BTW, it wa blast going back to play the original Rainbow Six!
Lag used to be a lot worse back in the day. Hell, it took Jesus 3 days to respawn.

I loved that game. I got a copy before release and really got to discover it before it became so popular and well-known.
There was nothing more tense than Rainbow Six multiplayer. Just sheer anxiety until you got the drop on someone, or they saw you first and POW, you dropped like a stone.

Five bucks a month is pretty tempting, but since I got in the habit of buying the boxed collections in the 90s (Interplay, Ultima collections come to mind), I've got most of these games still on disk.
And, thanks to the magic of DosBox, http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/download.php?main=1 , [i]I can play them ... if I ever have the time.

I ended up going for the $60 1 year thing. I saw enough on the list of existing games to warrant paying that much so it was pretty much a no-brainer. The program has grown by leaps and bounds since last year, so this should turn out to be quite a bargain.
I've been playing Uplink, Space Quest 5 and Prince of Persia, and watching cartoons.
Anyone found any gems I should try?

It's the same one that PolyPusher referred to - $60/year if you sign up for a year ($5 a month), whereas it's $10 a month without the deal.
I don't think I'll be sticking around past my free trial. It's kind of neat playing the old arcade/console titles that I never got a chance to pick up the first time around, but they're just too dang hard on my old dude reflexes. Sadly, it's much easier to play these kind of titles in an emulator where you can save memory state/progress at any time. I'm in no way condoning piracy - I just think GameTap could learn a lesson and offer that as an option.
Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

It looks like there's a boatload of potential here, especially if they keep expanding the catalog and jack up the multiplayer quotient. I'm downloading Uru and HoM&M III now.
I thought the Balder's gate and Zork series were nice additions. I'm curious to see what's coming down the road from them. They also have a button for submitting ideas. Time will tell, I guess.

I hear ya. I understand it's a licensing issue.
And if I haven't seen further, it's because those bloody giants blocked my sight.
I'm thinking of joining after seeing the game list - it will give me a chance to play the 1st two Splinter Cell games & Rainbow Six games that I haven't played yet, plus Golden Axe for the Sega days!
