GameFly problems?

So, I love GameFly...sorta. Their games always seem to take awhile to get here, but I think I can live with that. However, lately I've had problems that make me wonder if they're not insidious money stealers.

In late Aug. I received a copy of Dead Rising. It didn't work (GWJ post suggests Aug. 19). I sent it back (after getting new memory card to test with Dr, so perhaps on Sept. 3).

Sept. 5 - receive email stating that NCAA 07 had shipped. This was pretty far down my Queue, but that'll happen.

Sept. 14 - I report that game missing. They send out email saying they've shipped out another copy.

Sept. 29 - I report that game missing, file a complaint with customer service.

Their response was to state that perhaps my access to the postal system may not good enough. They go on to say they may have to review my account if there are any further problems, evidently to see if I'm worthy enough to continue taking my money.

So, here's my psuedo-conspiracy theory that I'd like to hear from you folks about: I wonder if they just don't have enough Xbox 360 games, so they're "sending" out games....well, but not really. 8 of their 10 most popular games are for the 360, and almost every game is listed as "short wait". Has anyone else had problems like this with them lately?

It sorta' pisses me off that they blame my postal route and such, especially since a game I purchased from them on Sept. 29 has already arrived. I bought that game because I had a bunch of GF dollars and thought I might end up bailing on these folks. In the end, I paid for the month of September without getting a single new game. (I held the other one...who wants to have both games in transit?) And their customer service response was annoying to me.

About a month ago, I got in a game that I had requested last August. I had canceled my service last September. The envelope was postmarked 10/5/05.

I think this is the postal service's fault, as they're apparently still clearing out backlogged mail from last year.

I'm just wondering if I should hold on to the game or ship it back.

It is probably a problem with the postal service. I've been a Gamefly customer for over three years, and I had problems with games getting lost in the mail for quite a while. However, it was always on the way back that the games got lost. Eventually, I started to suspect that someone might have been breaking into the outbound mailbox at my apartment complex, so I started sending the games back via a more secure mailbox. Sure enough, games stopped disappearing.

More than that, though, everything about how their customer service department treated my ongoing troubles filled me with confidence that they were on the up and up. They always promptly mailed me the next game on my queue, and helped me through the process of trying to investigate my mail route. Now maybe they treated me better because I was already an established customer before I started having problems (I had been with them for more than six months before the problems started and I had used their "keep it" feature a few times), but still, I personally doubt that they are in the business of ripping off their customers.

I've had occasional problems since resubscribing to Gamefly this year. In the past, I had no problems.

I think I'm next door to a distribution center so I always get games quick, and I've been lucky enough not to have any 'lost by the postal service' (stolen) despite having a very unsecure outgoing mailbox. You probably have a thief on your hands, whether it's in the post office or some kid plundering your mailbox. Obviously it's not in Gamefly's interest to keep serving a risky customer.

Well, the same day I posted this, I got my next game. I live in an out of the way place that most people don't even know exists, so it would be really surprising if it were someone thieving from my mailbox. More likely, I suppose, is a postal employee somewhere.

Still, I was sort of taken aback by their response. They suggested I complain to the post office, which I'll do. However, I sorta' felt like I was the one who paid for a month of service during which I had none, and then to have a very lukewarm response...Seems like if they were worried about theft, they wouldn't put the damned things in those bright orange envelopes!

At any rate...I'm a hair from cancelling. I love the idea of the service. I love that you can get the PDF instructions online. I love the Keep It program. I've had something like 8 games since joining 4 (5?) months ago, two of which didn't work. I had a month of missed service. So, I'm teetering...

I have had similar problems since Joining back in late August of this year. 2 copies of Dead Rising were lost in transit to me, and the copy of Dirge of Cerberus I rented appears to have been lost in transit back to them.

I eventually called to complain about the fact that I had paid for a month's service, and (at that time) had only received one title. Not to mention that their response times to my email inquiries were remarkably slow (easily 24+ hrs per response, if not longer).

Calling seemed to have more of an effect, as the lady I spoke to was able to clear up the issues with my gameQ (titles not received were staying in my rented section), and offered me 5 GF dollars for the inconvenience.

I've decided to stick it out for now, but if the delivery times continue to be 5+ days, I will probably cancel after a few months.

I've had Gamefly for about 4 months now. 1 game got lost on it's way to me and they shipped out another soon as I reported it. I really really like their service. However, I'm going to be cancelling it after my current month runs out, I'm all the way on the east coast, and the one distribution center kills me. It takes a week for them to get a game and another week for me to receive my next one. I'm paying for all this downtime. I am on the gameznflix trial and so far I like it alot, got my games overnight (!) and you get 3 games for 17 dollars. Dead Rising, Chromehounds and Oblivion were all available soon as I signed up. We'll see how long I like them.

I'm thinking that it would be pretty easy for someone at the post office to jack these games. For one, the bring orange envleopes stand out and I'm sure their are poor mailman out there who want to play games too. There's no way Gamefly can prove what happens once the games leave their distribution center...

I've never subscribed to GF, only bought. Twice they've shipped me the right game in the wrong case. When I e-mailed them about it they immediately sent me the correct case. Didn't even ask for the other one back.

Once or twice I've gotten dirty discs from them (I just got a copy of The Outfit that actually has chips on the edge), but never anything that doesn't work.

A gameznflix review thread would be great after you've had them for a while. I'm another person who would use them in the future if their service is good. If I ever buy another console that is.

I live in Mass so I tried them out for a while. Even though they are in NJ they were slow and never shipped the titles that I wanted.

Okay, I'm back to thinking they're screwing me: two games were reportedly shipped to me:

NHL 2k7, shipped Oct. 2, listed as "Short Wait" on the website.
Oblivion, shipped Oct. 7, listed as "Available" on the website.

Guess which one actually showed up (Hint: it starts with Oblivion). The other game I've gotten over the last two months was also listed as "Available Now"...all the ones that didn't arrive were "Short Wait."

I'd much rather just hear from them "We can't ship you a game 'cause we don't have it in" than what they're doing now.

I dont know how gamefly handles their users queue, so this is just from the perspective of someone who uses a similar service.

We use Netflix for movies and tend to churn through dvd's pretty quickly. Because of this, they do seem to delay our access to newer titles or hot titles and in their system I am sure we are tagged as a 'heavy' user. Basically they know we already take good advantage of their services and they make less profit on us, so prioritize hot/new titles go first to less-frequent renters, to up their customer satisfaction and to encourage those folks to upgrade their account level etc.

So what is available to one user of a service, may not be equally as available to another user. Not sure if something similar is going on in their queue system.

About "queue cooldown time:"

I've experienced it from Netflix, and thus know what it looks like. I haven't seen it from Gamefly, although it has been about a year since the last time I was swapping games at a rate that would trigger such a thing. If they do have such a system, either they started it fairly recently, they don't apply it to long time customers, or they are much more sneaky about it than Netflix is.

Firesloth, I hate to say it but I think you just might be outside the range where their service is effective. Whether they are intentionally hosing you or not I don't know, but in any case it seems like the service isn't working for you. If I was having that kind of trouble, I'd just cut bait and look for another similar service with distro centers closer to you.

Well, I think I'm gonna' try another service soon. I don't think it's the distance -- if the time it took to travel from there to here weren't infinite, I'd be fine! It's just suspicious to me that the only ones that don't get here are titles that are in high demand. I've gotten two non-high-demand games recently.

If it were the queue cooldown time bit, why would they send me an email telling me the game has shipped? On the other hand, if I'm the only one having issues like this, maybe it's just some fluke thing.

Im still going with theft. That bright orange package changes a lot of hands between Inglewood and Indiana. Do you find the packs you do get are tampered with in any way? The taped sides broken or just no tape? Now they're using glue to make sure only the end user can see the title of the game.

I'd try the east coast service. If stuff still disappears, sit by your mailbox in a rocking chair with a shotgun. If stuff STILL disappears, visit your Post Office with said shotgun

I had similar troubles with Gamefly last year. Multiple titles came up missing (being sent and returning), but they didn't give me the benefit of the doubt - and cancelled my account. Unfortunate.

I came across gamerang and have been very happy. They have delivery confirmation for each title being sent to you. They have all the games and I get them within 2 days they're shipped. It's a good service. Recommend it if your woes with gamefly are beyond repair.

Well, that's no different than GameFly...at least for the 360. The only games I've gotten in the last two months are Blazing Angels (oh god, don't make me think of it again) and the just-received Oblivion.

I'll look into gamerang. I'm also tempted by the cheap price tag of GamezNFlix (stupid, stupid name...at last they have the alternative gamesnflix.com).

2 minutes ago, I cancelled Gamefly. The turnaround is just insane. It doesn't help that I'm all the way in the piss end of the country, but I still can't believe that Gamefly, which is supposedly the biggest, only has 1 distribution center (California), while the Gamerang has 4 (California, Oklahoma, Jersey, Minnesota).

I'm looking into other alternatives.

[edit] I just found this list of reviews. May come in handy. Anyone ever heard of GameLender?

GameFly's been pretty great for me and Logan on 360 games. Dead Rising, Saint's Row, Tomb Raider, Condemned, Call of Duty 2, and a few others... so far the only time we've had trouble getting a new game is right now with NHL2K7.

Another gamefly endorsement: I got Chromehounds, Dead Rising, and Saints Row all in the first week they were launched with a little Q fenagling. Its also fantastic for anyone who's just gotten a new old console like Gamecube or PS2. You can try everything. Not much has any kind of wait. However I too just cancelled them to make my budget happy after re-resubscribing to WoW.

GameLender looks nice. Too bad they don't have an option for 1 game at a time. Though I have more consoles, I play more PC games so I don't need or have the time for two at once. Ultimately, that's why I haven't signed up for one of these services yet. I will probably lose money since $15 a month is more than I spend on console games monthly. I might have been mistaken but some of the lower rated ones on that review list had PC games. A possibility.
