Ok, I've been listening to the genius that is Zach Braff and the Garden State soundtrack since it came out. Somehow the CD always seem to get more cycles than anything else in the house. Obviously downloaded the soundtrack from "The Last Kiss" as well and listening to it right now pretty much all the time.

What other good soundtracks am I missing out there? And where can I find Zach Braff's ipod playlists? The guy has excellent taste in music.

Why not just get the albums of the artists that were featured on the Garden State soundtrack? I have all of them and they are most excellent. Also, the Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou soundtrack is awesome.

That reminds me of a movie review I saw for Last Kiss a week or to go, which stated that Braff's movies are "little more than Ipod playlists with a weak plot attached."

Seriously, though, just go to a used record store with a pad and paper, most non-corporate shops these days have an "Indie" section, just write down the names of all bands in that section. Or even easier, just google "indie rock." The current indie scene makes a profit by pushing bands that all sound exactly alike (much like corporate rock, ironically), so the actual names of the artists or bands doesn't really matter, just the genre.

[edit]: not that there aren't a few indie bands that I listen to, I'm just disgusted with how bland is popular at the moment. I few actually good and unique artists: Why? (particularly his Oaklandazulasylum album), Nuetral Milk Hotel, Ladytron, Passage, The Faint, etc...

The Spawn Soundtrack was interesting. They took nu-metal or hard rock bands and paired them with techno/industrial groups. Definitely hit or miss on some songs, but I dug the experiment overall.

1. (Can't You) Trip Like I Do - Filter & Crystal Method
2. Long Hard Road Out Of Hell - Marilyn Manson & Sneaker Pimps
3. Satan - Orbital & Kirk Hammet
4. Kick The P.A. - Korn & The Dust Brothers
5. Tiny Rubberband - Butthole Surfers & Moby
6. For Whom The Bell Tolls (The Irony Of It All) - Metallica & DJ Spooky
7. Torn Apart - Stabbing Westward & Wink
8. Skin Up Pin Up - Mansun & 808 State
9. One Man Army - Prodigy/Tom Morello
10. Spawn - Silverchair & Vitro
11. T-4 Strain - Henry Rollins & Goldie
12. Familiar - Incubus & DJ Greyboy
13. No Remorse (I Wanna Die) - Slayer & Atari Teenage Riot
14. A Plane Scraped It's Belly On A Sooty Yellow Moon - Soul Coughing & Roni Size

I'll echo Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou from luna-- that's a pretty good one.
Snatch is awesome, probably my favorite.
If you like disco-era music that's pretty light on the actual disco music, Boogie Nights (both discs) is great.
Broken Flowers is an interesting mix of older music that you've never, ever heard.
As Podunk said, The Crow was pretty good. The second soundtrack was decent, also.
Pi has some interesting electronica.
Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction were pretty good.
Rushmore, Kill Bill Vol. 1, Natural Born Killers (for some reason, I don't like this one as much anymore), Dumb and Dumber, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Koyaanisqatsi (hard to find), Dune, Clockwork Orange, and just for kicks, Purple Rain.

Check 'em out on iTunes, buy them at your local used CD place.

The soundtrack from Stubbs the Zombie may actually be right up your alley. It features modern indie rock bands covering music from the 50s and 60s. And while we are talking about covers, if you like the Beatles at all you MUST check out the soundtrack to I Am Sam, which is an eclectic mix of musicians doing Beatles covers.

If you don't mind a little bit of twang, the soundtrack from Brokeback Mountain features some beautiful steel guitar work. I generally skip the tracks that are not by Gustavo Santaolalla when I listen (as I mostly cannot stand country music) but even still the soundtrack is worth many a listen.

Here's a few movie soundtracks that I like:
The Crow
Office Space
Star Wars
The Replacement Killers

and if you like the Garden State soundtrack, you might want to check out the Elizabethtown soundtrack. They're very similar in style.

As far as game soundtracks go, I'd have to say Battlezone is my favorite. I remember back in the day, when you didn't have to have the CD in the drive to play the game, games like Quake II would play the CD Audio of whatever CD was in the drive. That was always good music to frag to.

Other game soundtracks that were good:
Gran Turismo 3
GTA: San Andreas

Kelly Rowland (from Destiny's Child) sang the most beautiful version of "I'm Beginning to See the Light". So far, I could only find that song as a part of Mona Lisa's Smile's soundtrack.

Good Bye, Lenin's soundtrack is good, but which one of Yann Tiersen's isn't? Yann Tiersen is responsible for the music in Amelie, and that movie introduced his music to me. Ironically, I still don't have Amelie's soundtrack.

Just to offer something a bit different, soundtrack to Frida is fascinating. If you are into Spanish/Mexican music, that is. Lots of singing there sends shivers down my spine. And, from a totally different part of music spectrum, soundtrack to Judgement Night was my favorite a looong time ago. The best crossover album ever. Besides that, I definitely have to add Blade Runner as a required listening, it's Vangelis at his non-pompous best.

It's not Wandering Toast. Except in TF2, where it usually is.

Are you asking for recommendations for movie scores (for which all of the music is 100% original - see Star Wars) or compilation soundtracks (i.e. collections of licensed music)?

Of the former I could recommend many, of the latter I have few.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Tan Dun
Whale Rider - Lisa Gerrard

Game soundtracks: Myst, Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Myst V:End of Ages, Metal Gear Solid 2
