Anyone happen to catch last night's premiere of the new Showtime original series "Dexter"? I'm somewhat interested although it seems like a show I'll quickly get bored of if it doesn't stay creative. It really depends how they develop Dexter's character and move along with his psychosis.

Curious if anyone else caught the show.

I don't really know anything about this show except it stars the guy from Six Feet Under. I'm willing to give the show a shot because of that.

Yea, I was going to pass on it altogether then I saw the actor you mention was starring in this series so I figured I'd give it a shot. It's not up to the quality of some of the HBO Originals (The Wire, early Sopranos, Carnivale, etc) but it's pretty good relative to the average Network drama. I thought the serial killer who drained his victim's blood and arranged the hacked up body parts was cool in a grotesque, creepy way.

I wish I had Showtime to catch this one, as the first Dexter book I read was fantastic. Hopefully they'll be able to capture the utterly creepy vibe of a guy who has to work quite hard to pass as human.

Everything can be debated, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's debatable.

I didn't hear about this show until a week or so ago and was very tempted to subscribe to Showtime as the I thought the idea was very cool. Kind of a CSI meets American Psycho kind of thing (that's how it sounded in my head atleast). But the more I thought about it I figured I would just wait and see how the show actually turned out and if the buzz was good I'd pick up the DVD set when it comes out. I'd hate to subscribe to a network just for one show that may or may not be good. Weeds has tempted me, but wasn't enough to break out the cash.

I just watched the pilot.

Okay, I would like to tell you - I am, when compared to other people my age (20), somewhat of an accomplished writer. Or at least, further ahead in my craft than average. My favorite word in the entire English language is "defenestration." So, it would be safe to say that my vocabulary is above par.

I can't say a damn thing about this show because I honestly don't know how to explain it. "Blown away" doesn't cut it, it feels weak and hollow. This show is good, but not just good, good. I proceeded to type in sentence fragments and obscenities yelling at my friend who does not have any cable channels to acquire it by any means necessary.

I have lost the ability to write coherently about this show. I don't know. Maybe I'm just that weird that it speaks to me in ways it won't others, but damn, have I found my #1 show.

Wow, definitely one of the shows I'll be watching from now on.

Two people from Oz are in the cast so far, I wonder if there will be more.

Oh I think I just read the novel this is based on. Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Jeff Lindsay. It was alright. Does the main character have an older sister who's a cop?

She's on the vice squad and he's in forensics.

Yep, that's the one. I thought the book was fun but a bit shallow and short on characterization. I guess you could defend that by pointing out that it's written in the first person perspective of a psychopath, but even so. It was like buttered popcorn - tasty while I was reading it, but pretty forgettable as an experience.

I'll check out the show, though. It was an interesting premise, maybe they can do better things with it than the author did.

I have read a little bit of the novels, and I'd agree with you that it's forgettable.

I think this translates much better as a film or film-style show. Especially when you get an exceptional actor to actually play out a psychopath in what, by all accounts of my meager criminology education (gotta have some electives), is a very accurate portrayal.

My wife and I just watched it this evening: very interesting (and different) television, that's for sure. I usually take it as a good sign when I want to know what happens next once the episode finishes, and in this case, I really want to know what's in store. True, the production values aren't what I'm used to seeing in stuff like Six Feet Under or Battlestar Galactica, but the characterization is very fascinating, and Michael C. Hall's performance is bang on. It's very dark, and really funny all at the same time: very much not your typical TV show!

Plus, Julie Benz (Darla!) is in it: what's not to love?

A couple weeks ago the wife and I rented and watched the entire first season over the course of a weekend, and we're totally hooked. We were a little curious as to what direction the show would take in season 2, however, as there were some pretty damned huge changes in Dexter's life at the end of S1.

Last night we sat down and watched the season 2 premiere.

Hot damn, this show is just awesome. I kept thinking to myself that everything that was happening to him pretty much sucked and would force him further and further away from his desired lifestyle, but then near the end when he's watching the news report and has his hand on his heart, you can tell that he's not upset at all, but excited by it all. This season looks to be just awesome.

For anyone who hasn't seen the first season, I would emphatically suggest you go and rent it now!

Season 2 premiere episode is available on Netflix's Instant Watch feature, BTW. My wife would happily subscribe to Showtime just for this show.

I watched the entire season in a weekend a month or two ago. I was surprised to like it given the nature of the hero, but the creators struck just the right tone and often watching felt like reading a really good crime novel.

The one problem I had with it was the length. It seemed to me that to extend Dexter's story line out beyond the 6-7 hours it would have taken to tell as a miniseries, they tossed in a lot of regular cop show material involving minor characters to bulk it out to get the episode count up.

I think a lot of the minor characters are really going to come into their own in season 2, which is a good thing as there are certainly some compelling storylines to be had.

I think the inner monologue really helps here. It gives you a sense of what he's thinking, and how he's feeling about different situations.

It's a great show. I have Showtime OnDemand, so I normally watch the episodes the next day after they air. I've only had the time to watch about half of the premier, but what I saw looked great.

I ordered Showtime just for this show (which a few posts above you can see that exactly 12 months ago I said I wouldn't do that). They're currently running a deal where you can sign up for Showtime for $6.95/month for the first 3 months. It expires on Saturday. When I called Comcast last night to order I asked them what happens after the 3 months and surprisingly they told me the rate doesn't change. She said normally with deals like this the rate goes up but according to what the computer was telling her my rate will stay like that. Not sure if that's just a Comcast thing or if it's even true. Guess I'll find out in 3 months.

Correction to my peer: She gets transfered to homocide in the first season -- and she's younger ( I think).

I watched the whole first season last week, and saw the first two episodes of the second season "somewhere" and "sometime" which may have been befored they aired.

Yeah, ITs based ont he book --or at least the first season is. Second seasons straying from the books. Supposedly it much more filled out than the books. Much more full characters.

I am quite fond of the show. I would say "love" if I were any other person, I think, but dishonest, and pointless. The same part of me that empathized with Mersault in the Stranger has a affinity for this show.

I think I might be a bit of a sociopath.
