Do you belong to a guild?
As I was driving to my monthly Government Relations sub committee meeting Tuesday night, thinking of the GWJ-TOF combined raid on ZG I was missing, it occured to me that my real life guild duties were keeping me from my virtual life guild duties. Hate it when that happens. But seriuosly, how many of us are involved in guilds (i.e. trade or professional organizations) and why or why not?
As a psychiatrist, I belong to the APA (american psychiatric association), but not the AMA (american medical association). I belong to the APA and its local chapter partly for altruistic reasons (advocate for the mentally ill) and partly for selfish reasons ( advocate for better working in conditions: pay insurance reimbursement etc). My real life guild also serves as a very important resource for me, a forum for asking many of the questions I ask my GWJ guild mates all the time:
How can I get to the next level?
What is the best way to improve my ______ skill?
This tool is going for x$$ at the auction house, is it worth it?
Are guilds useful to you in real life?

Awesome - can you come fix up some bricks for me, then? They're coming loose, and pro bono work is really all I can afford.

My uncles are masons. The best most honest group of men I've known. Thats in my hometown. Where I live now. Free Mason just means a syndicate of self serving cronies that laugh at screwing over other people. Hard for me to believe they are part of the same order as my uncles.

I belong to the American Physical Therapy Association. It does not do much for me as I am a Physical Therapy Assistant and their focus is on other things rather than truely helping the PTAs. Why do I remain a member? The monthy mag has good research articles. The list is given to the continueing ed companies, so I receive a lot of class brochures in the mail. Very useful as the credits are required for liscence renewal. I get a break in price on the PT month stuff. Love the pens and tshirts
And lastly, a break on my car insurance for belonging to a professional organization.
What is far more useful to me than the APTA is the PT forums online. These allow professional discussions with other therapists worldwide regarding treating my patients.

The Illuminati, Free Masonry is a red herring.

I'm a member of the Modern Language Association (MLA) and receive plenty of boring newsletters and magazines in exchange for my dues. The main benefit is the chance to attend the annual conference and eventually apply for a real job.
The best part, though, is the few chance opportunities to duke it out with the Ancient Language Association on Language Association Night at the local bowling alley. Not much of a contest these days, since their numbers have been dwindling since, about...465c.e.
